First round was for Kath - but I commissioned a local framemaker to make them. This time, I'm DIY!
Oh, and I've got some stunning Huon Pine to work with in 2013 too :)
So I'm diving into the pool yesterday and hear a POP in my leg - ouch! My right heel is now so weak - I fear surgery is in my future! I'll need to get to the doctor today and see what I've done.
My heart & prayers go out to those in China hit with those Earth quakes. I always watch the earth activity via rss ( earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/catalogs/feed.php?feed=eqs1d... ) and realize how severe their current situation is.
This is the frame after the application of composition ornaments. Composition ornaments, or "Compo" is a primitive plastic material first developed in the 17th century to enable mass production of carved details for the decorative arts. If you have a victorian house with curlicues around the fireplace or newel post, for example, that's most likely compo.
Compo is made with animal hide glue, pine rosin and whiting (powdered chalk). It's soft and flexible when it's fresh, and can be heated on a steam tray to apply to most any surface. Since it's made out of glue, when steamed it becomes it's own adhesive. Over time (months or years) compo dries and hardens to a brittle hard plastic material.
I'm not a big fan of antique shops ... but I know many people that are. This one reminds me of that movie "Little Shop of Horrors" ... Suddenly Seymour!
I wonder why its wings are that way? I guess they get tattered from use? (and probably from little kids innocently trying to catch them)
I think this is the proper way of capturing butterflies. Keep them parallel to the camera to make sure all parts are in focus. Taken at f/8 so I have more leeway in terms of depth of field. Shutter speed took a big hit though...down to 1/30th of a second. VR helped I guess. Still not as sharp as I wanted. 200mm
15 second exposure! What a pain! People passing by are probably wondering why we weren't moving for such a long time!
Viewed framed.
I think this is a common perspective but I saw the lights and shadows and figured it will be good to do some monotones. I used an external flash on some shots.
I only used Lightroom for processing and I made a preset based on the settings I used. Processing was just one click away on all the Lincoln images. Done at 2am. lol!
James Monroe (1758–1831) fought in the American Revolution, served in the Virginia legislature, and was elected to the Continental Congress. After acting as both secretary of state and secretary of war during the War of 1812, he became the fifth president of the United States in 1817 and served until 1825. His greatest accomplishments included the passage of the Missouri Compromise and the issuance of the Monroe Doctrine, which warned foreign powers against further colonial expansion in the western hemisphere. This portrait originally belonged to a set of half-length portraits of the first five U.S. presidents that was commissioned from Stuart by John Doggett, a Boston framemaker and art dealer.
Framemakers organiser and all-round great guy Jeff Gormly (left) and the lovely Miriam dancing, dancing, dancing...
The little sign on the left says "for lease" ... I'd sell it. I get a kick out of the windows ... every single one is broken!

While pulling out the Christmas decorations I was digging for my high school year book - Amazing how many memories that brought back! Looking at this beauty I can only imagine how many memories were made here

Under pressure from fierce opposition to his rule, Stadtholder William V and his family fled The Hague in 1785. They returned two years later and the stadt¬holder’s authority was restored. This provided the occasion to commission a series of portraits of the members of his family from the portraitist Tischbein. The artist produced a fashionable group of oval portraits in pastel. The giltwood frames were made by the Hague framemaker Hendrik Ebbens.
