What is fracking? See video from this event. youtu.be/04VBcTGpGgw?hd=1

According to Wikipedia, our society's main online information source (Do kids even know what an encyclopedia is anymore?): "Induced hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracking, commonly known as fraccing or fracking, is a technique used to release petroleum, natural gas (including shale gas, tight gas and coal seam gas), or other substances for extraction."

And what does this mean to us? According to some, it is the intention of major oil companies to begin the practice of "fracking" in Sacramento county. The fracking process involves drilling large holes deep into the earth's crust in order to extract the natural gas far below us. Though precautionary cement casings are placed around the hole, the possibility of gas leaking into the groundwater supply is a real concern.

Personally, I'm not opposed to "fracking". But I am opposed to fracking near or around the American River. My reasoning is simple. "Accidents happen!" Just the idea of fracking in my backyard brings images of toxic rivers, lakes and streams. Will my children be able to play in the river on hot summer days? Or will it be polluted beyond recognition?

Here is a link to the Q&A video on "Fracking" with Congressman Dan Lungren at the Carmichael Town Hall meeting on Aug. 22.

Shale gas and fracking pose a direct and immediate threat to our drinking water, air, health, local communities and our climate. While the oil and gas industry try to convince the public and policy makers that the risks can be managed, we - the Greens/EFA group, the European Green Party, Friends of the Earth Europe, Food and Water Europe and HEAL - have decided to support the citizens in putting an end to this pro-fracking propaganda and make their voice heard even louder. It is now time to reveal the real truth about shale gas and fracking! We must stop investing in shale gas that would lock ourselves in another dirty fossil fuel cycle, and urgently promote and heavily invest in renewables and energy efficiency.

On Tuesday 18th September, a few days before the international day to stop fracking - the Greens and the three environmental groups launched their own information campaign, calling for a global frackdown, in Europe and beyond.

We organised an action against shale gas and explaining why this energy source is clearly neither a short-term nor a long-term solution.

Fracking: An Environmental Debate

with Edward Cross & Joe Spease

Monday, March 5, 2012 7:30 p.m.

at the Dole Institute

Hydraulic fracturing is a procedure that can increase the flow of oil or gas from a well. It is done by pumping liquids down a well into subsurface rock units under pressures that are high enough to fracture the rock. The goal is to create a network of interconnected fractures that will serve as pore spaces for the movement of oil and natural gas to the well bore.

Edward Cross serves as President of the Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA) where he oversees all KIOGA business activities and programs. He is responsible for public policy advocacy and interaction with external stakeholders including elected officials, regulators, government decision-makers, and community thought-leaders. At KIOGA, Cross is director of staff, editor of the Association’s publications, serves as an industry spokesperson to media outlets and other forums, and is an industry advocate as a registered legislative agent. On behalf of KIOGA members, Cross lobbies in both Topeka and Washington, D.C.

Joe Spease is CEO of WindSoHy, an energy company, based in Kansas City, developing wind/Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) projects, wind/hydrogen (H2) projects, solar projects, and biomass/syngas projects. This follows his work as President of Pristine Power where he was responsible for developing large wind, solar, and hydrogen projects. Spease’s leadership in the field of renewable energy has taken many forms. He has published articles on wind, Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), hydrogen, and solar power, and provided frequent expert testimony on various energy-related issues before legislative committees and as a guest speaker at energy forums and conferences. He is Chairman of the Hydraulic Fracturing Committee for the Kansas Sierra Club and works to get regulations to prevent environmental damage from fracking.

Evidence proves natural gas drilling has contaminated drinking water supplies. tripledividefilm.org/files/l-o-d/

Do you still believe the industry when they tell you there's never been one single case where natural gas drilling or fracking has contaminated a drinking water supply?

When the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) conducts an investigation of possible contamination of your water supply from oil and gas drilling, at the end of their investigation you may receive a “letter of determination” or LOD. Not all water supply owners who’ve been part of DEP investigations have received these letters, however, and many report that gas drilling operators accompanied DEP during its water testing visits, even before gas drilling operations are known to be the cause of the contamination.

Triple Divide is a documentary about the evidence in fracking. See how DEP investigations start in complaint files: tripledividefilm.org/files/complaints/

Hydraulic fracturing (commonly "hydrofracking" or just "fracking") is the injection of water and chemicals under high pressure into rock formations to extract natural gas. A study by the New York Times in early 2011 revealed that the wastewater, which can total more than 1 million gallons per drilling and can contain corrosive salts and carcinogens, often contains high levels of radioactive material and is inadequately treated before discharge into rivers that supply drinking water. Communities in Upstate New York such as here in Otsego County are mobilising against fracking. There is concern that fracking could contaminate the drinking water of New York City with carcinogenic chemicals.
