Sorry for the absence but my computer collapsed to dust overload.

The latest wonderful idea by our government and "Shell" is to mine the Karoo for natural gas. Anything less natural could not be hoped for. If you have an opinion about the environment and hope to maintain nature for the generations to come please read this:

Large parts of South Africa's beautiful, but water-poor and ecologically sensitive Karoo region are under threat of being devastated by mining operations to extract natural gas using a controversial technique called hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking'.

During fracking millions of litres of water, sand and numerous chemicals most of which are toxic, carcinogic as well as teratogenic (they include benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene, ethylene glycol (antifreeze), diesel fuel, naphthalene (moth ball) compounds, boric acid, arsenic, poly nuclear organic hydrocarbons, only to name a few of 500-odd chemicals used), are pumped into boreholes at high pressure to release natural gas (called shale gas) trapped in layers of underground rock.

In the USA, where fracking has been used extensively, there have been hundreds of documented cases of this process resulting in:

- catastrophic drinking water pollution;

- air pollution;

- health concerns for humans and animals; and

- general environmental degradation.

In the wide open spaces of Wyoming there is a huge amount of varied fuel extracted from the earth. This can be oil, via the endless numbers of nodding donkeys, coal from the huge opencast sites, gas and of course fracking has made a significant impact on the landscape. The locals seem to welcome these industries as they bring wealth and jobs to their region. On our travels I believe we even came across a bill board advertising a party for the 50th or was it 100th local fracking plant.

Needless to say in our crowded island (the UK) people live adjacent to the planned fracking sites and are concerned over the impact upon their home, their health, earth tremors and through noise pollution. All of these issues don't seem to exist in Wyoming, primarily due to the fact that no one lives nearby. They are two truly different landscapes which offer entirely different ways of life. It is no wonder that different attitudes prevail.

This image captures a couple of huge American trucks, the nearest being a Peterbuilt example. They are seen crossing the Powder River rail network at the wonderfully named Eberspacher Road crossing. From what I could gather they had deposited their loads of sand at the fracking plant and were returning empty to collect more.

The dairy herd at Wensley's Farm move daily across the fracking site. Who will monitor contaminants in the food chain when Fracking takes place? Behind you can see work progressing on construction of the workover rig which will be used to drill the vertical well. Protesters have managed to delay progress by several weeks.

The Denver skyline - and all of the metro area - sits underneath overcast skies that threaten to release a minimal amount of snow. Denver hasn't had more than a trace of snow since October 9th! Meanwhile, a unit sand track (with some borrowed power from BNSF) heads west on the main at East Leyden. The train is headed for the Craig Branch as all the sand is needed for fracking in the Craig area.
