"The rocks in these odd formations were born of fire and water. The dark-colored schist was originally sand, silt and clay at the bottom of a long departed sea. Molten magma from deep within the earth invaded the schist and gradually cooled into the lighter-colored granite. Mushroom shapes were formed when the granite stems eroded quicker than the schist caps." -trail sign RMNP

Took a side trail to find this formation of columnar basalt. From Wikipedia: "During the cooling of a thick lava flow, contractional joints or fractures form. If a flow cools relatively rapidly, significant contraction forces build up. While a flow can shrink in the vertical dimension without fracturing, it can't easily accommodate shrinking in the horizontal direction unless cracks form; the extensive fracture network that develops results in the formation of columns. The topology of the lateral shapes of these columns can broadly be classed as a random cellular network. These structures are predominantly hexagonal in cross-section, but polygons with three to twelve or more sides can be observed."

There were not many birds to be seen out at sea, but this group of Shags were flying quite close to the cliffs this morning. Great to see and an almost prehistoric looking bird.

(I would have preferred a little bit more space at the front though, I almost chopped his beak off)
