I had about a 1/2 hour left before I was forced to leave to get to work on time... I had to scoot a tid bit north of Oconto to get these final captures.

Now a full fledged developed shelf.. and it was reforming to become even stronger as it moved due north for the rest of that evening.

Can't complain... a very good day of storm chasing. 2 good storm cells, 3 good opportunities for some of my best captures for 2016. It was a good day!

Now positioned just to the south of the city. Funny when I parked on a side road.. which was heading east, I was parked heading west (in a corn field). The road was called "Thunder Ln". Ironic.. I don't think so!

This was the approaching storm from the northwest. I was shooting video and I didn't have my tripod. Time was short before I lost all light and out of 25 shots this one was the only one that was not blurry. Last of the series, and it was a great way to start of my 2018 storm chasing year.

A Kewl HD Video to Boot! Some good footage of rotation on the furthermost point south of the storm. On the South side of Phillipsburg Kansas. Its to big to put on Flickr ...Link on over to my YouTube Channel to view the Video youtu.be/3K8Av9Q00L0

Storm Chasing Video from that day Click Here

Didn't have to go very far for this chase day. All the storms were coming to us. Though the greatest risk for Naders this day was way way north. I knew if anything would form this way it would be brief. It was.

Started out with the first cells that came though, but the dust was so thick I really didn't want my camera in it so images were limited. But I did get a few.

Video is always running so was able to make this short vid of that chase day. 80+ mph winds with these storms as they moved though Nebraska. In all it was 3 rounds of severe weather and not just 1. Winds were ferocious... not safe to drive in this unless your experienced. I had a hard time at times keeping the truck on the road.

West of Odessa Nebraska was where I would first get some good video and photogenic captures of this approaching storm. Haboob ish.... strong winds were pulling the dirt in the outflow of the storm. Several radars were tracking just the dust cloud. It was a kewl sight to see live.

Not many captures from this set due to the blowing dust... but what was caught... well... You know!!!

In September, Nebraska’s sunsets transform into breathtaking spectacles, amplified by the dramatic presence of thunderstorms and supercells. As summer’s heat begins to wane, the Great Plains remain a hotbed for dynamic weather, with warm, moist air clashing against cooler fronts to create vibrant, fiery skies. The sun dips below the horizon, painting the vast Nebraska landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple, often intensified by towering cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds, illuminated by the fading light, glow with an ethereal quality, their edges tinged with gold as the sun’s rays refract through the atmosphere. The open plains offer an unobstructed view, making the interplay of light and storm clouds a daily masterpiece, where the sinking sun seems to set the sky ablaze against the silhouette of distant fields.

For those in rural areas, watching a September supercell at sunset is an unforgettable experience. The air grows heavy with the scent of rain, and the distant rumble of thunder provides a soundtrack to the visual spectacle. Farmers and storm chasers alike pause to witness the sky’s drama, knowing that these storms can bring both vital rain and potential destruction to the region’s corn and soybean fields. The fleeting moments when the sun’s last rays pierce through breaks in the storm clouds create a sense of timelessness, connecting the observer to the raw, untamed spirit of the Plains. In Nebraska, September sunsets paired with thunderstorms and supercells are not just weather events—they’re a vivid reminder of nature’s ability to inspire wonder and respect in equal measure.

This set of images is what I live for... Those epic moments when you finally hunted/found what your looking for. It does take a lot of patience to storm chase. The waiting, the planning, the doing. But the rewards at the end are priceless. My antlers on the wall.

Now for some storm chasers... the Holy Grail of Storm chasing is a Tornado. But not for me. It is events like this that give the full definition of Storm Chasing. It really what storm chasing Eye Candy is all about! It is the "Why" or the understanding of why I do this!

Unusual yes.... To see severe thunderstorms in Nebraska in the morning hours of April... But it is what it is. Of course I'm not gonna miss a beat. I had gear packed and was ready the night before.

HRRR models had storms starting to develop about 5am ish to my west southwest and the models were right on spot that morning. Though I slept in till about 7 and was off without coffee and hopped into the truck to chase these morning cells.

Nice structure in the beginning but they eventually all when high based. Not many but some good photo's on this jaunt. It was worth my time!

We had to move to the southwest to get back in the action as several cells were developing along the frontal boundary.

We had a good lighting show as the cells were developing just to the east of us, and the storm to the west of us was shooting off tons of cc and cg lighting.

We were fortunate to be right in the middle of the cells. We didn't stay very long due to the cells were targeting the Norton Kansas areas and north.

Though this storm did have severe warnings on it and it had better structure to is before I got on this storm to the north of Elm Creek Nebraska. I did end up underneath this cell but it was already loosing her steam.

This storm cell was still warned and producing 2 inch hail. I would stay to the southwest of this so I would have a really good view on the rear flank.

Out of the hospital and some time behind me to heal. With my wife's permission I was allowed to enjoy a few more chase days before the storm season ended. We get this small opportunity in the month of September for severe weather and I wasn't going to miss a beat.

I moved a few miles south, right in front of the cell as it approached from the southwest. It would eventually skirt just south of Kearney and then loose its steam for development. Dying out about 20 miles to my northwest by Gibbon Nebraska

Though I was in position to capture some excellent rotation on this cell.... Close to home and I was in the zone for some credible severe storm photography!

Day 2 of chasing the plains of Wyoming. With a good chance of seeing what we came for. We had plans in place to be in position early to catch that's days first round of severe storms in Central Wyoming.

Moving west via Hwy 26 through Torrington, Lingle, Fort Laramie, Guernsey, then north on I-25 to Glendo where we would stop to watch the scudnado form and not produce.

Packed the gear up after this event and moved south to be ahead of part 2 of that afternoon and evenings cells that were to develop shortly after this first event.

After the jaunt south to Pine Bluff Wyoming we headed to Bushnell Nebraska. About 15 miles from Pine Bluff Wyoming to watch this next storm build and eventually move west into Nebraska. We didn't want to be under the base of this storm due to the hail core. So we backed off and awaited the storm to develop right at sunset!

An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!

First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.

We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.

This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.

Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down right spectacular.

We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast. The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.

Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

Under the base of this storm, we already has meso detection. TVS markers were on radar and it was moving directly to Ogallala Nebraska.

We got there on time and stopped right off of the interstate at a gas station with the best view.

This highly photographic supercell was maturing. But at this moment... This storm decided to weaken just a bit as we waited for this cell to produced a nader. Lost the TVS marker so we didn't stay long and packed the gear and headed south towards Grant Nebraska.

Day 6 in a row of severe storms with our chase day starting northern Kansas.

Good friend and fellow storm chaser Chuck Patient was on the ride along that day.

We had gone through a few good rain bans on the way south out of Nebraska into northern Kansas when out of the blue just to the west of our location this incredible wall cloud formed briefly, and stuck around for a few minutes before it became rain wrapped.

As far as I know this did not produce a funnel, but the rotation sure was incredible to watch live!

Mid to late June in Nebraska is... in my words... a photographic storm chaser's heaven when it comes to storms. Almost every afternoon through mid evening then into the overnight, north south east or west of Kearney Nebraska we have storms that you can see clearly for hundreds of miles in any direction. Of course not all at the same time but there is plenty of eye candy this time of year.

Putting some distance between myself, a good photogenic storm and a good camera lens...The skies Nebraska offers this time of the year are truly magical. Though, there are a lot of farms and telephone poles, but if you can find the right places, there is open fields, and excellent perspectives. You can capture something special. As for example, this evening...

Folks, you see that I'm not always about chasing the Tornado. When severe weather approaches. These Nebraska Skies, they talk to me... and I never miss a good conversation...

This was taken just to the south of Overton Nebraska. This severe storm cell was aggressive. When I approached it was already tornado warned and it would be the start to one of the most photogenic days of 2011 for my storm photography.

What your viewing here is a classic example of what we call in storm chasing the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraft)

The rear flank downdraft or RFD is a region of dry air wrapping around the back of a mesocyclone in a supercell thunderstorm. These areas of descending air are thought to be essential in the production of many supercellular tornadoes.

Finally a good setup for severe weather and were were on time for the event. Shortly after 4pm CDT were in the Moderate Risk area for that afternoon. Arapahoe Nebraska was our destination. Traveled a few miles south to get the best open position before the storms. Pointing the cameras due southwest, this is were they were to develop and become severe.

Towers were already forming and were were under the first cells of the day. These would become the tornadic cells just north of Alma Nebraska that late afternoon.

Shortly after 5pm we had our first encounter with severe weather. Storm just went severe and we could see clear rotation on the southwest side of the base of this storm.

Not many chase days in the month of June 2017, as this day turned out way better than expected. You never know what you might encounter on a decent moderate risk day which was mostly on the eastern side of Nebraska and Western Iowa.

These first cells were moving from the north to the south as I encountered them just to the east of Schuyler Nebraska. I didn't have to to travel to western Iowa as all the action stayed in eastern Nebraska that day. It was mostly an HP mess for most of the ride till then.

A Fun Adventure should always lead you back home. It did, and the storm closely followed. A nice picturesque tornado warned storm approaching Kearney Nebraska from the northwest.

Final shots of the night. After close to 12 hours of storm chasing that day. I was tired and was happy I was taking snaps from my front driveway.

Once the storm passed, the ambient city lights did the rest of the magic as the storm passed over the city.

The day wasn't over. Went home downloaded all the images video & charging all the equipment...

Late evening... about 10:30pm ish I had alerts set up for counties to my north just in case we had storms develop. Oh they did...

Weather Alert alarms were blasting warnings. Grabbed my gear and caught this crystal clear nighttime supercell off to the northeast of Kearney.

All those storms from earlier that afternoon made the sky crystal clear & perfect. Cloud to cloud âš¡ was just popping out of these thunderheads. It was the perfect opportunity to do what I do best!

Sunrise...

Non severe storms now forming just south of the I-80 corridor.

Really beautiful billowing thunderheads. With the cresting sunrise light I was in for a photographic treat.

An incredible morning of storm light & shadow!

South Central Nebraska, early May 2012. No chasing this day due to work late. Afternoon Storms were predicted that afternoon & evening. Slow movers they were to be.

Off work & I was in luck. The dryline had stalled right over south central Nebraska that afternoon & the explosion of billowing thunderheads erupted. Billowing picturesque Thunderheads. Some of the most photogenic cells I caught in 2012.

No tornadoes on this day's chase, but some incredible supercell structure out on the plains of Nebraska.

We started the day with a supercell that had several meso structures being reported from radar. This storm was tracking slowly about 12 knots cresting from the northwest to southeast. Classic June storm structure for this time of year in Nebraska. Northwest of North Platte Nebraska it had reported wall cloud and we definitely wanted a piece of this action.

We arrived as it was gaining strength as it has pushed through Maxwell Nebraska. We stopped in Brady, just to the southeast via I-80 corridor to get the bugs off of the windshield and as the storm was gaining strength. We had stopped just a few miles to the south of Brady we set up shop to catch this storm. Nice clear beautiful structure accompanied the underbelly of this supercell. Though we had a clear cut defined wall cloud this storm never did show us her tornadic teeth.

After about an hour on this storm in the same position (rare for us to do this) we eventually had to back off and get back to the east. We had to get south of Gothenburg just a few miles off the I-80 exit area for the next structured shot of this supercell. Oh we got just what we were looking for! Phenomenal base rotation!

Eventually we had backed off again as the hail core was approaching. Plus this cell was loosing its steam. We moved back to the I-80 corridor then south of Cozad Nebraska and this cell was in redevelopment mode and we had some waiting to do. Though not a long wait as this original cell fizzled out but we had one more chance for good structure south of Overten Nebraska. We headed to Loomis Nebraska for another treat to end the day. Oh did I say treat? We got a whole bunch more eye candy than expected.

Just to the east of Loomis Nebraska we encountered some incredible supercell structure. This storm wasn't going to be shy, and she eventually showed us some teeth.

Personal Note: For some odd reason I didn't clear my memory card on my last chase, and I ran out of room on my SD Card. I had to stop shooting after the wall cloud was right over my location my Loomis Nebraska. I didn't have time to pull out my spare card and load it due to the strength and this fast moving cell. This storm cell became outflow dominate and man do I mean dominate. We got caught in the outflow boundary several times with tons of gustnadoes and almost haboobish. I did have my trusty camera with me... I was in the drivers seat so when we had a chance, I did capture some incredible pics that blew me away literally.

All in all. I'm not always about catching the tornado. I had some good friends and fellow storm chasers along side that day. In my opinion... just another EPIC chase day in Nebraska!!! Woot Woot. More to come!

These next 24 hours would very interesting. I was in the 100% Totality Zone for the solar eclipse the next day. So the camera was ready. Snagged it from the charger and I was off.

Had to work in about an hour. Of course I was waiting most of the afternoon for these storms to come closer and they eventually did...

I had pushed back north to the I-80 Overton Interstate interchange and was moving due east. There wasn't a soul on the road except for 1 maintenance truck that would end up next to me in Elm Creek Nebraska.

Now back in front of this cell as my full attention was directed due south. This tornadic storm was producing some incredible rotation. Window down and concentrating on driving to the east. I was taking a few snaps when I could and being safe about it. There was some incredible south winds that was swaying my truck, or I should say pushing my truck from lane to lane.

Severe Warnings popped up for this lone cell by Oconto Nebraska with a nice TVS marker just south of the city. It was my calling to get my gear together and make a small jaunt north on Hwy 2 from Kearney Nebraska. This storm was to be in the Miller Nebraska (northwest of Kearney) area within the hour and I wasn't going to miss this show when its this close to home.

No other chasers on this storm and it was just this lone thunderstorm and me! Beautiful LP structure with clearly visible rotation on this storms' time lapse. Couldn't have asked for a better landscape setup with the pure flatness of northern part of South Central Nebraska.

Storm died out as this storm cell scooted almost directly due east it still had some luster left in her and she was showing off. Beautiful billowing thunderheads to end this chase day!

Late evening on hot and humid August evening in Nebraska. Warnings popped up about an hour before this storm was even visible to the eye over the horizon at sunset.

Spectacular Colors emitting from this stacked supercell. Cloud to Cloud Lightning shooting off every few seconds made this a storm chasers dreamscape.

Gear in hand that evening I traveled north out of Odessa Nebraska. Now about 2 miles to the east of Amherst Nebraska. This storm was strengthening and moving almost due south, southeast, meaning it was coming right at my location.

It would be a Historic Event to capture! Now remastered to the original color with no enhancements. Enjoy!

January 2020

It has been awhile since I have come back to this set of images.

Original Set of Images can be found here on Flickr

This set of images is and still has been the most stolen set of images I have on the web on several platforms. Literately millions of views with no link back to my work or my photostream. Probably why I haven't revisited this set til now.

Just to let you know, those images were WAY over processed, over saturated etc. Yes I'm guilty. But it was the way I did things back then. I don't anymore.

Every year I go back and edit a few sets of images that deserve to be re-edited or reprocess from raw. I'm also adding several images from this set I didn't share last time around.

Beautiful storm photography from my best of 2014 Collection!

"Stacked Plates" is storm chasers jargon for us to describe a strongly striated mesocyclone! Oh this was a B E A U T Y!

Late August 2011. This was a LP (Low Precip) Storm, and she didn't drop an ounce of rain. If anything did come down it evaporated before it hit the ground. It was so damn hot and humid and was just happy the sun was blocked out by the clouds and then this came along. Along with the severe warning it had on it a few counties north of my location as it moved south.

You can clearly see the mid-level inflow bands. Better known as striations. These were so well defined it was jaw dropping!

When the storm got close enough I couldn't really see or verify a wall cloud of any type. We had a few lowerings, but nothing significant to get me to report it. So I really can't call this a supercell. But it sure was fun one to witness!

June was a tough month... Not only did I have my transmission go out on the truck. Their would be NO storm chasing for about 3 weeks. Of course its June and we did have few good storms pass though and I was disappointed that we couldn't go get em all.

Back in the saddle for this last June storm. Nice for almost end of season development. Under the base this storm no tornado was going to form due to it being undercut. Nice rotation in this cell though, and it was what we came for.

Solo Chase Day & Close to Home....

Luv it when the chases are in my backyard. Not having to drive 3 states and 1200 miles in 1 day is relief. I know I'm not the only chaser that says that. This was a phenomenal afternoon of severe weather. When I say this... It means that its photogenic & for the most part not effecting the farms, agriculture, livestock & the human element.

Mammatus before the storm, then I decided to bail on this first storm for the next which was to the north about 25 miles. This storm had wicked good rotation under the base. Even though it was high based it was producing some freakin awesome views.

The storm had overtaken my position and I had a 40 min drive to get back in front of this storm. It was on my tail the whole way back to the I-80 corridor. Though a little late I was still able to get back in front of shelf cloud. The teeth on the outflow were almost scraping the ground. It gave the effect of a funnel but it was not. Been doing this to long to make sure I know the difference.

That was a hoot. Though I waited til the last minute. I got swallowed by the core & had to wait it out. Want to see what its like out in the open with no shelter... This I have also done a billion times. 50mph winds rocked my truck! That was fun!

Finally, I blazed it backed to Kearney for this Storms Finale... Beautiful Sunset light illuminates the exiting storm with a Anvil Rain & Mammatus Cluster ... It was truly a Sight to See!!!!

Out of the hospital and some time behind me to heal. With my wife's permission I was allowed to enjoy a few more chase days before the storm season ended. We get this small opportunity in the month of September for severe weather and I wasn't going to miss a beat.

Severe storms now starting to form just to the southwest of South Central Nebraska. Warnings were already issued for 4 counties south of us and it was building and moving my way.

Since I haven't been out in close to a month, I packed up all the gear and went out early to catch some beautiful light and bubbling thunderheads before before the show...

On the open plains of Nebraska...

August was a GEM month for severe storm structure. Folks... I didn't miss a beat.

Pure Eye Candy this one is. Open air supercells developing right as the dry line passed over us in South Central Nebraska.

I wasn't going to get underneath this one though it was close. I could have chased it, but I wanted to get the structure that day. Oh I got what I came for!

I had planned accordingly. Knowing that the storm was going to pass as it rapidly developed to the due east. I waited for bit under the hail core before I got into position to capture this storm.

Building Billowing Beautiful updrafts on the back side of this storm were memorizing. Perfect Supercell structure.
