Southwest of of Overton Nebraska...
This set of images is what I live for... Those epic moments when you finally hunted/found what your looking for. It does take a lot of patience to storm chase. The waiting, the planning, the doing. But the rewards at the end are priceless. My antlers on the wall.
Now for some storm chasers... the Holy Grail of Storm chasing is a Tornado. But not for me. It is events like this that give the full definition of Storm Chasing. It really what storm chasing Eye Candy is all about! It is the "Why" or the understanding of why I do this!
One the edge of this Nebraska Supercell I felt the AWE of Mother Nature!

Well its be close to a month since I've actually been out chasing. July 2019 in South Central Nebraska has been hot and dry... for the most part. Another reason for my absence is my trusty storm chasing truck is on her last leg. I've had transmission problems and the wheel bearings are going out on 2 of the tires. Its 20 years old and she has taken good care of me and my storm chasing adventures over the past. I'm going to have to retire her instead of putting more money into the till for her to get fixed. I have new truck being custom built for storm chasing in 2020. She has been ordered and will be picking it up in September.
Oh yeah... we have had severe storms in the State of Nebraska, both West and East throughout the month of July. By the time they would even get to our location in the South Central Region of the state....they were just rain showers. More flooding rains to the east a about a week ago 3rd time for some of the folks in the state. I'm sure the farmers are not to happy and are waiting for harvest to start.
So with that being said...I did get out just once in July. On a night that the storms were perking and it was late. Extremely tired but you all know when it comes to lightning, I don't miss a beat! Opportunities are rare this time of year and I really never miss a storm. Especially if it is close! I couldn't resist!

Back in Kearney. Underneath of what remained of this supercell in North Central Nebraska. It was dying fast. Though we had a few cells (non severe) forming close to my location as this storm was on the out.

An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!
First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.
We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.
This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.
Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down right spectacular.
We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast. The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.
Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

I hand a phenomenal day of storm chasing in Nebraska on this day. A western Nebraska severe weather event, with moderate risk of tornadoes..
A few miles north of Sidney, on Highway 385, I finally got into a safe position to get some nice captures. Pointing my camera to the due west, another wall cloud was trying for form.

Lots of action that afternoon, but all of the tornadic parts of these storms were to stay south in Arkansas. Didn't stop us at all that day. I was on the hunt, and we were in for some good severe weather treats that afternoon.
Heading south to get to the next forming storm cell. I paused for a second. My sis luvs Crepuscular Rays. Had to get a few snaps...

We pulled way north and got back into southern Nebraska. Now on the backside of this thunderstorm. Intense cc lighting was to good to pass up.
We pulled off just north of Alma Nebraska. Pointed the lens due south and captured some of the best lightning of 2015

First outing of 2026. This had a severe warning on it as it crested into south central Nebraska from northern Kansas. Storm died right as I got to it. This wasn't gonna let me down. Was able to get some excellent views of this storm in its dying stages.

In position to watch the storm develop to the west and southwest. I had got to one of my open spaces that had quick access to the north if I had to leave fast.
This storm cell developed into a monster with quarter sized hail and 60+mph wind speeds. This was a terrific photographic beast. A dangerous but a fruitful basket of storm chasing eye candy!

Started the day around Oconto Nebraska. Where this set of images begin. Severe storm cells were approaching from the northwest that afternoon. @ that time they had the best potential for what I was looking for.
Though mother nature was fickle that afternoon as this storm started to weaken. The southern most cell had plenty to work with dry air out in front of it. So got south. Now just north of Overton Nebraska & I knew I was in for a good show.
This storm sure did try to produce a tornado but in the end it came down to an Outflow Dominate Storm... No nader but the views that afternoon were EPIC!

Moderate Risk threat that afternoon as the storm began to fire about 5pm CDT in south central Nebraska.
We had planned it out perfectly. Just out in front of these cells before the NWS threw a warning on this supercell. We didn't have much time though as it was producing golf ball sized hail just to the west of our location.

Late July 2023...
This month of storms was just down right jaw dropping. Why not continue since we didn't have any storms in May or June! Overtime for July is the way I like it!
90% of the time of year in South Central Nebraska is Hot & Humid. It is normally the beginning of our dry season. But not in 2023.
In the path of the Jet Stream that day that forced some severe thunderstorm development over south central Nebraska. We were not excepting anything super severe but a tornado or 2 is always possible this time of year.
Gear Primed & excited about the views I'm going to get for this event that day. I knew they were going to be photogenic.

Early season storms here in Nebraska are simply surreal. The epic beauty that surpasses the sunset's ability to crest its light against the ominous position of this storm that evening.
Sunset cresting into twilight with a huge anvil (Cumulonimbus Incus) approaching from the northwest into South Central Nebraska.
I had way over colorized saturated other things to this original set of images. So I went back & took the raw images back to their original color templates & remastered them back to the original color specs of the origin image.
I only had a few of these published when I posted them back in 2017. Here is the entire set reworked!

Rare for Nebraska in November that is....
There was some risk of severe weather that afternoon. In fact.... way out of season severe weather. There was just enough instability by afternoon to allow the thunderstorms to develop, strengthen, and even spin up a few tornadoes in the 4-5 p.m. CST time frame.
I had a 5 hour drive back from Missouri and was exhausted. Plus I had to work in a few hours so chasing this storm was just not possible that afternoon. But I did venture out to capture a few snaps of that afternoons events.
Pictured here were the cells effecting the Red Cloud to Clay Center Nebraska areas. I was just to the south of the I-80 Minden Interchange. Found a cozy spot without any powerlines and pointed my camera to the east southeast.

It was the reason why I got into storm photography. It has taken years of practice to capture it without a lightning trigger. Patients is the Key. But when it happens you have to be ready. It doesn't stay around for very long.
Had the equipment locked and stocked. Knew the storm was coming and wala... It took til August 2021 to do but finally some incredibly good and wicked lightning!

Every year on/in the Non Storm Season... I go back & re-edit the masters. This year I wanted to get this set done since I was way over everything... To much color, to much contrast, there were flaws in the panoramas... The orginal set can be found here on Flickr
I have Remastered this Series
Fixed Everything. Normal Color, no added saturation or contrast. No Extra's. You're seeing the Raw images. Slight adjustment with light but that was about it.. Also Fixed the flaws in the panoramas!...

I have this uncanny knack to get to the right place at the right time when it comes to storms... This one was another spot on encounter. I decided to eyeball this storm and put away the radar and other electronics and just chase use the old way.
It had been a few weeks since any good photographic storms. We had Severe Thunderstorm warnings counties south of Phelps county (Located in South Central Nebraska) that afternoon.
Raced this cell and I was now in position to capture this beauty. Just a few miles north of Elm Creek on Hwy 183. This place has the best view over the valley. Worst cell phone reception ever.. even with a 4g booster I couldn't push out a signal.

Sitting on the west edge of Kearney, we can see right over the Platte River valley.
Storms were just building as they were moving to the northeast. I got there just in time to set up the tripod and let mother nature do the talking!

Mid August 2014.... A very hot & humid Sunday afternoon. With only a %30 chance of storms developing, we had a chance for a severe weather to develop. Central & South Central Nebraska were due for a good August Storm.
Conditions were just right for storms to brew. Right after 4pm CDT, northern Buffalo County (just north of my location) was getting hammered with 2'" diameter hail. This storm was on a direct course to skim just to the north of the city.
As I got into position, moved a few miles north to Riverdale Nebraska to watch this storm move into the area. Just the beginning of this storm was photogenic . Talk about Ominous... This instability before the storm was insane. Huge mammatus cloud cluster above this approaching shelf cloud. Truly foreboding cloud structure as it creased ever so closer.

Remastered Series.
Another Freak Picturesque Nebraska July Thunderstorm. A True Photographic Storm Monster. Wicked good striations, and the scuds on the bottom of the outflow line looked like teeth.
Another Classic Outflow Dominate Nebraska Thunderstorm! 2011 Month of July has simply been over the top for storm photography. This was one of my best sets for the year.
Just to note...
My old Nikon D50 had some major issues.
Internal Lens was dirty.
It had been knocked over by the wind several times.
Had some permanent internal flares.
Tons of noise in the original captures. A few are little blurry due to the 45-50+ mph outflow winds. I couldn't keep the camera steady. Every pic here was worth it though!
It took long time to rework these images....

Mother nature gave South Central Nebraska a few days break from the constant rain. I shouldn't complain. We are close to the end of our rainy season. Though... this is Nebraska where we can have severe weather breakout anytime...as this storm cell did.
Late night, early morning cells were moving along a boundary. We only had a 30% chance of storms. Storms there were out in the Nebraska Panhandle died and the reformed about 1:00 am just to the west and northwest of Buffalo County in South Central Nebraska.
This was a photographic beast as I just a few miles to the east of Kearney. I wanted to use the city lights to illuminate the storm as it pushed to the southeast. It simply has got to be my favorite night chase of the year. Close to home and incredible structure!

Mid May 2026
We finally had our first bout of severe weather after a horrendous drought season. We welcome the rain but not the severe weather. But an actuality when severe weather approaches that's when I shine....
Day 2 of Severe weather events across Nebraska. My adult daughter by my side. She didn't want to miss out on this years severe weather events as her passion equals mine... She wasn't going to be disappointed this day!
We grabbed the gear and headed deep in Central Nebraska that afternoon. Long story short... We avoided the Chaser Convergence & planned it out perfectly.

The 2016 storm season is upon us here in the plains of South Central Nebraska. Thought I better get the cobwebs out of the lens and take a few different perspectives.
Nice set of thunderheads off to our southeast. Nice Towers forming over northern Kansas and moving into southeast Nebraska. No chasing this day. Had to work, but this was good for an after work viewing of the storms.

Hot, Humid and Thunder Approaches. Nice thunderstorm cell just to the north of Broken Bow was sliding south into South Central Nebraska.
Gear packed and ready rumble, I slid north via Hwy 10, which was under construction. I didn't remember this when I left that afternoon and it would eventually push me out to the country roads of Northern Buffalo County Nebraska.
Severe warned and producing 3 inch hail. Severe winds were also a factor. It was a good photogenic storm to capture.

An EPIC Nebraska Thunderset (Thunderstorm @ Sunset)!
Nebraska has many different views... Sunsets are one of my favorite things to take the time and watch. This one this evening after the storm had dissipated... simply was surreal!
Glowing prisms of colors coming off of the Nebraska Plains... Need I Say More... If you Luv Sunsets... Your gonna love this one in Nebraska!

1st storms for June 2021
Moderate risk for this section of Nebraska. As we packed our gear and left about 3:00am to intercept these forwarding storm cells. Yes I said 3:00 am.
6:30am ish....Once in position to intercept... They were moving extremely fast and once they moved over our location it was hard to keep in front of them. We tried. Though we eventually have to move south Close to Shelby Nebraska we got the last severe storm of the day!

I was in route via Hwy 183 South down to catch that Easter Sunday Supercell... Before I hit the Nebraska / Kansas border, I flipped the truck around to catch the developing cells on the dry line back in my home turf, Kearney Nebraska.
I was about 100 miles to the south when I took this snap... Classic Nebraska thunderstorm structure on this with the updraft and anvil shoot off to the east... What a view... but this was just the beginning...

Severe Warnings popped up for this lone cell by Oconto Nebraska with a nice TVS marker just south of the city. It was my calling to get my gear together and make a small jaunt north on Hwy 2 from Kearney Nebraska. This storm was to be in the Miller Nebraska (northwest of Kearney) area within the hour and I wasn't going to miss this show when its this close to home.
No other chasers on this storm and it was just this lone thunderstorm and me! Beautiful LP structure with clearly visible rotation on this storms' time lapse. Couldn't have asked for a better landscape setup with the pure flatness of northern part of South Central Nebraska.
Storm died out as this storm cell scooted almost directly due east it still had some luster left in her and she was showing off. Beautiful billowing thunderheads to end this chase day!

Happy that our storm season has started. There are others like myself that waiting, planning, wanting the smell of the rain, to feel the wind blowing against your face, and just the welcoming of spring to plains of Nebraska. I truly wasn't disappointed.
Shortly after 5:30pm the dry line started to fire and we got of first visible towers building just to north and west of our location.

A few kewl cloudscapes presented itself as I was getting my bearings on what cells to follow since nothing was severe.
Storm cells were redeveloping to my southwest but I only had a few hours till I had to work. I would eventually head east then back to Hwy 136 west...
A few final surreal shots from that evening's drive back home. There is no place like Nebraska!

First outing of 2026. This had a severe warning on it as it crested into south central Nebraska from northern Kansas. Storm died right as I got to it. This wasn't gonna let me down. Was able to get some excellent views of this storm in its dying stages.

Was quite surprised to see storms develop out in the western part of Nebraska that day. The cold front had pushed into the state by early afternoon and severe storms were forming. Severe weather watches were posted for Dawson and Custer counties. Storms were moving at 10mph and I had plenty of time to catch up to them from Kearney.
Storm warnings for cells in western Dawson county promoted me to position myself to the south of Ansley. Found my favorite road called Box Elder and waited. Impressive Hail Core and developing shelf cloud was just to good to pass up!

Severe warnings just to the west of Lexington Nebraska on a Sunday eve...shortly after 9pm... what more could I ask for!
Way past sunset and I had all the equipment ready to go. Jaunted out to a few miles west of the city to get set up for a intense night of storm photography & videography.
This ended up being the best photogenic storm of April 2019 and I didn't have to chase it as it came to me! How sweet is that! April Storm Chasing Eye Candy!

This would become an epic night of light and storm! Some of my best lighting captures of 2011 are in this set!
A few hours later that evening storms in north central Kansas fired up again as they were pushing into south central Nebraska. @ This time with severe warnings, the lightning was firing off.
I was in luck! They were foretasted to move almost due norht / northeast over the next few hours and I just had to find a good location. Due to the time of year the corn here in this part of Nebraska is at its peak. 13-16 foot corn. I had to find a spot that I could see over the corn.
I grabbed my gear & headed south. Made my way down, via country roads, from Kearney just to the north of Wilcox Nebraska. I sat along side this storm as it produced one of the most EPIC displays of lightning for 2011. Every few seconds there was incredible cloud to ground lightning. Sometimes it would spider out (cloud to cloud) and sometimes it would just be a fork or a positive cg bolt that was out of this world.

That last storm was moving extremely fast... 35+ knots. We had tried to stay ahead of the storm as we moved east but wasn't expecting the morning traffic to be that bad... it was. Plus this first storm dropped some torrential downpours. Causing some difficult if not impassible flooding situations as we moved due south.
Just south of Shelby Nebraska.... We were approaching the last severe thunderstorm of the morning.

Had to find a better place due to where the storm was coming in from. I had reposition myself right next to the High School football field. Long extended ditch that has a small roadway. Couldn't have asked for a better open sky than this.
This storm was moving rather slowly about 10 mph to the due north almost northwest. Outflow dominate, simply meaning this nice outflow. A shelf cloud on the outer rim of this storm as it approached. B E A U T I F U L!

Mid to late June in Nebraska is... in my words... a photographic storm chaser's heaven when it comes to storms. Almost every afternoon through mid evening then into the overnight, north south east or west of Kearney Nebraska we have storms that you can see clearly for hundreds of miles in any direction. Of course not all at the same time but there is plenty of eye candy this time of year.
Putting some distance between myself, a good photogenic storm and a good camera lens...The skies Nebraska offers this time of the year are truly magical. Though, there are a lot of farms and telephone poles, but if you can find the right places, there is open fields, and excellent perspectives. You can capture something special. As for example, this evening...
Folks, you see that I'm not always about chasing the Tornado. When severe weather approaches. These Nebraska Skies, they talk to me... and I never miss a good conversation...

Vivid streaks of light illuminate a turbulent sky over a barren landscape at night, revealing the dynamic nature of an approaching thunderstorm. Flashes of lightning appear to rip through the darkness, creating an atmosphere of raw elemental power.
Check out the Tornado on the lower right part of the screen... This was in Axtell Nebraska as I was pointing the cams to the due west. Confirmed on Radar... Yes It was coming right at me so I didn't stay long!

On the Last Stormchase of the Summer. I had to make this one count. First chase in my new truck. I couldn't have asked for a better Nebraska Stormscape Scenario!
Found and open spot just to the south of Merna Nebraska. Had the perfect view and this thunderstorm was talking!
Loaded all the gear out and started my thing. This truly would become one of my best photographic outings for storms in 2020. Glad I made the effort to go. In spite I just had major surgery 3 days before!

Early severe weather season had officially started. Severe Storms and the end of March in south central Nebraska and early April 2013 make this one of the earliest years we have had severe weather. If the conditions are right severe weather can happen really any time of the year here.
Next storm was forming to the south but it had pushed east of my location. Gathered my items and did the same. Went east. Now south of the I-80 / Minden interchange about 4 miles or so I had a good view of this build storm as it approached from the southwest.
As the storm to the northeast was exiting the area... I was now able to focus on the storm to my southwest. It had gained some steam over the past 15 mins and it was building.
If there was any rotation to this storm it was extremely brief. This would been it if it was...
