6th Year in a row we have had a severe thunderstorm pop in south central Nebraska late evening on the 4th of July. Thousands of strikes and the cloud to cloud lightning was simply breathtaking.
This storm crested right south of the I-80 Nebraska corridor, which is just south of Kearney. It was stationary for about an hour and then it pushed a little east before it grew and slowly moved to the southeast into North Central Kansas.

Storm Chasing Video from afternoon / evening on Flickr Click Here
Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...
As all of my cameras were pointed towards the supercell showing all that rotation. I really didn't pay attention to the storm that was coming in from the due north, until I paused to look that way.
2nd Storm was almost on top of my location. Luckily it was moving to the southeast & that meant I had a little time before the storm moved directly over.
This 2nd storm was outflow dominate. Producing this incredibly photogenic shelf cloud as in slow crept toward the city of Kearney.
This storm just kept getting photographically better by the minute. I had to flip 180s for a few mins as both storms was producing some insane storm photography!

Received an interesting piece of Fan Mail a few weeks ago. With questions about what do I do when I'm not storm chasing. The author wrote, "Since you live in Nebraska & you only focus on severe weather. Do you ever do any other type of photography & videography?"
As a matter of fact I do. (This is the first time I'm ever posting this type of photography content to Flickr). I'm really in all aspects of nature. But the scenic views is what I come for. Took a few weeks off at the end of September to do a bucket list item (get to the top of Pikes Peak). Also to visit my sister & brother that live here & enjoy some quality family time with them.
Colorado Springs has some epic views. It was also one of the reasons I took our family's early fall vacation to this area of the US. The seasonal foliage was just starting & the aspens were already turning their fall colors. Those Epic Views is what I was after!
Booked our family tickets to the Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The Cog has been climbing Pikes Peak since 1891. It was one of the most unique experiences that I've have ever done. This place is recognized as the world's highest cog railroad, The railway is an important part of the heritage of the Western United States.
So to the Individual that had wrote me that Fan Mail. Here is your answer. I know I don't post anything but severe weather, however I wanted to give a small sample what other photography interests that I have & do.
BTW, I & my wife got Altitude Sickness something gnarly. Took a bit to get over after the event but it was worth every second! Plus it snowed the next weekend on top of Pikes Peak.

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!
I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best photography to date...
Just north of Arapahoe Nebraska, the first non severe cells of the day were putting on a spectacular display. I pulled off to get some incredible Nebraska stormscapes!
*** Editor Notes ***
Greetings Everyone, I haven't posted many new pics since last chase season and the 2020 is upon us. Looking for our first set of storms in the coming weeks and I'll be streaming live and of course some of the best storm photography one could ask for.
2020 Update...I've been revamping how I do things. One of those things is to go back and correct how I did my post processing of images. Several Years of over Colorizing over Saturation Adding color... etc. Yes I'm guilty of doing so and I have been going back and replacing thousands of images in hundreds of sets over these past few months here on Flickr my Fine Arts America Site.
The May 7, 2016 Colorado Tornado Event was by far one of my favorite chase days to date. I was able to capture the full genesis of a tornado. From birth to death. It was a quest of mine to do this in a photography medium. Epic severe weather structure, like once in a lifetime structure to capture. But post processing was a nightmare. The images came out well ... Defined but over colored over saturated etc.
Instead of replacing the images this will be a whole new set with a few hundred new images that I didn't post on the original set back in 2016. I've thought about re-editing these images for a long time and they are finally done. No Altercations what so ever. No Added Light, Color, Contrast.
I've brought them directly from RAW. Simply the way I should have done it in the first place!

Impressive... This is what I wait for each year. The opportunity presented itself, and I was prepared. Though I was super sick, and I shouldn't have been out.
I had left early that late afternoon to head north from Kearney. I knew from day prior that this would be a phenomenal storm chasing day. SPC had us on Target from the night before. All the right conditions came together. Awesome.
These were just the outer edges of this supercell as I approached from the southeast. Perfect Conditions, Perfect Light.... but the 3" diameter hail was not, that was to come....
Just some superb captures to start off that storm chase'n afternoon. Which, btw was only the beginning....

Early August storm cells are usually non severe and with little to no precip. Though the dry air creates some of the best photographic scenarios you could ask for if you love clouds... especially storms in Nebraska.
I had the afternoon off and was ready for that afternoons chase. Camera in hand, and storms moving into northern Buffalo County from the northwest...I was ready to catch some incredible storm captures.
August has always been my month to capture some of my best pics. This set of captures was just the first of many to come!

Over a month off from any type of photography or videography. I did go out a few times though my wife was super strict after I got out of the Hospital. I sure didn't want to go back... I had to sneak out... shhhh don't tell her. I'll post a few of those later... there's not many...
Now my body was on the mend, believe me when I say I was super sick. I was. The 2018 storm season was almost over... We have this little window of opportunity the last week of August till the end of September where we have that peak of severe weather. Just the opposite of spring.
I was not allowed to chase but this was close and I got some incredible snaps!!!

Mid October... 2023
Final Chase Day at hand for 2023....
Warm and with SPC Active warnings that afternoon of severe weather. Stayed in the South Central Nebraska Hwy 6 Neighborhood.
Some wicked good, or should I say fantastic views of the out waves of moisture to mix in with spookiness of October. Late season supercells along the dryline were forming & I had to get underneath! You know for the view that are contained within! Oh I got my share that day.
Not to spoil the fun... No Tornado that day.. or at least I didn't see it. Came over the 2 way that the was one on the ground exactly where my cameras was pointed... however bad positing on my part. If it was there I didn't physically see it. It doesn't mean it wasn't there...
The active warning for the Tornado didn't fire off on my alarm till I was already due east of Minden Nebraska. Didn't have the best plan for attack here. I knew it was coming but where I deiced to park wasn't the best viewing position. When that alarm goes off & didn't have the best road network to navigate though the city or around the city of Minden. So I decide to stay put since it was already heading my way.
Sometimes this is a good decision, that day it wasn't. I had played this day out a little to shy & got caught with just an outflow dominate storm that afternoon after the Tornado Warning.
It was a Fun way to end the 2023 Chase Season... Can't Wait for 2024!

Well, I had a long drive back after not catching anything of value. Actually, I was pretty much upset with myself. Didn't plan anything correctly that day. So I just wanted to make the best of what was not.

It was our first photographic storm of 2020. Usually in April I've been out in years past chasing the storms several times by now. But due to the Covid19 Pandemic and Old Man Winter sticking around way to long. This so called 2020, beginning of our storm season has been non fruitful for us weather observers in South Central Nebraska, let alone the state. But this is all going to change over for us fast here and soon we will be in the midst of our severe weather season.
It was good to get out. As I for one have been staying home and doing my part in stay safe and healthy. Plan on staying that way. Though cabin fever overcame my need to stay home. Prepping correctly. We made a small and safe jaunt to North Platte Nebraska to get out first taste of some Nebraska Thunderstorms....

Didn't have to go very far for this chase day. All the storms were coming to us. Though the greatest risk for Naders this day was way way north. I knew if anything would form this way it would be brief. It was.
Started out with the first cells that came though, but the dust was so thick I really didn't want my camera in it so images were limited. But I did get a few.
Video is always running so was able to make this short vid of that chase day. 80+ mph winds with these storms as they moved though Nebraska. In all it was 3 rounds of severe weather and not just 1. Winds were ferocious... not safe to drive in this unless your experienced. I had a hard time at times keeping the truck on the road.
West of Odessa Nebraska was where I would first get some good video and photogenic captures of this approaching storm. Haboob ish.... strong winds were pulling the dirt in the outflow of the storm. Several radars were tracking just the dust cloud. It was a kewl sight to see live.
Not many captures from this set due to the blowing dust... but what was caught... well... You know!!!

Our Severe Weather seasons is coming to a close. One last severe weather setup and it would be worth our time to chase.
We were in a moderate risk that afternoon with a 5% chance of tornadoes. Warnings had already been issued for Dawson County just off to our west.
Didn't have to wait very long a Tornado Warning was issued and we had just got to our area to setup and were pointing due southwest.
The video is a close up of what we saw that day. So one might be able to see the actual distance we were away from this storm from these images.
Get to close and all you get is grey and no structure. No photographic value of a storm. To far away and you can't get the detail. So to you have to find that perfect spot and we did that afternoon!

Another Epic Chase day in Nebraska....
Along with fellow chaser Myles Nelson, we had a small jaunt from Kearney out to the western skies of Nebraska. We met up with fellow chaser Aaron Edwards just to the south of the Sutherland Power-plant to set up shot a few hours before all the action began. We were waiting for the first cells to produce by Grant and Hershy Nebraska. They did form and the Grant Supercell was producing but it was traveling close to 60+ knots to the due north. Even if we wanted to catch this cell it was moving way to fast. So after a short broadcast out to Kent Boughton ABC NTV Affiliate. We packed up gear and started to head to the southeast towards Stockville Nebraska.
Tornado had already pushed through the McCook Nebraska area and we were in range to intercept. Though on way there, just on the outside of Stockville, we had to punch through a nasty hail core. We originally though we hit a deer or something else but once we got to the eastern edge of Stockville, we noticed we had a large pheasant buried into my front grill. I didn't know the extent of damage till we got back to Kearney that evening. That being said, we had the rotating supercell coming in from the southwest and were were planning on punching the core again. When fellow chaser Chuck Patient met up with us he had 2 inch diameter hail stones that they had just went through we had decided not to. It was a wise decision, and we eventually headed east.
Now I usually don't do country roads anymore due to the fact... If we get stuck we would be there for a long time and I didn't want to miss out on this event. But we did it anyway.... and just a few miles to the east of Stockville we headed north. It was a good decision due to being on the southeast side of this cell, we were in perfect position to intercept and we did. Far enough away from the RFD we had a perfect view of the Stockville / Farnam Torando from its birth.... Though we had to avoid other chasers, we successfully navigated to a good place for some excellent footage. Probably the best footage I've caught since the 2017 Tornado outbreak in Cheyenne Wyoming.
We got a little close... actually we had to get under and in front of it again. Yes a little dangerous but again I've been doing this a LONG time and I don't take risks that will get us killed. We had finally got back to a point in front of the rotating base just north of Farnam and where heading for the next intercept in Cozad Nebraska.
I-80 Eastbound we had to punch through the core again and we got lucky. Minutes before this cell produced another tornado we got just to the east of Cozad Nebraska to catch the funnel to the east of town. Not wanting to punch the core again... and only about a 1/2 hour of light left. We decided that we had caught what we wanted that day and head back to Kearney.
Though this cell was still raging late into the night. It had produced another tornado by the Oconto Nebraska area. Even if we wanted to chase this there wasn't adequate roadways to travel north and we would have never caught up to it again. To say the least, it was another epic storm chasing day in Nebraska.
Final note on these storms... that NWS had the Stockville/Farnam Tornado rated at a EF-1. That is how I have it listed in the VIDEO. Though reports last night confirmed it was and EF-3 with sufficient damage to property.
In the bulk of storm season out in Tornado Alley... Will be chasing again this week for more Naders!

NWS had the severe weather events for that day were to be about 200 miles to the east of south central Nebraska. Though we still had a risk of severe weather, but with the 100 Temps and lots of moisture to work with... it was bound to happen.
We had got down to south east Nebraska (Hebron area) late afternoon before the storms started to fire. Hwy 136 east would be our target spot when storms were just forming to the south Red Cloud Nebraska.

A few hours before I had to work. Just enough time to get a few captures of this incoming severe warned thunderstorm.
I didn't have the best light, and these captures didn't come out the way I wanted. But I'm going to post a few anyways.
It was after sunset and night was cresting in. This severe storm was developing out in western Nebraska had moved into eastern Dawson County, and was now building strength and was entering western Buffalo county.
This storm had some incredible defined outflow. A sweet late May Nebraska shelf cloud.

"Stacked Plates" is storm chasers jargon for us to describe a strongly striated mesocyclone! Oh this was a B E A U T Y!
Late August 2011. This was a LP (Low Precip) Storm, and she didn't drop an ounce of rain. If anything did come down it evaporated before it hit the ground. It was so damn hot and humid and was just happy the sun was blocked out by the clouds and then this came along. Along with the severe warning it had on it a few counties north of my location as it moved south.
You can clearly see the mid-level inflow bands. Better known as striations. These were so well defined it was jaw dropping!
When the storm got close enough I couldn't really see or verify a wall cloud of any type. We had a few lowerings, but nothing significant to get me to report it. So I really can't call this a supercell. But it sure was fun one to witness!

No tornadoes on this day's chase, but some incredible supercell structure out on the plains of Nebraska.
We started the day with a supercell that had several meso structures being reported from radar. This storm was tracking slowly about 12 knots cresting from the northwest to southeast. Classic June storm structure for this time of year in Nebraska. Northwest of North Platte Nebraska it had reported wall cloud and we definitely wanted a piece of this action.
We arrived as it was gaining strength as it has pushed through Maxwell Nebraska. We stopped in Brady, just to the southeast via I-80 corridor to get the bugs off of the windshield and as the storm was gaining strength. We had stopped just a few miles to the south of Brady we set up shop to catch this storm. Nice clear beautiful structure accompanied the underbelly of this supercell. Though we had a clear cut defined wall cloud this storm never did show us her tornadic teeth.
After about an hour on this storm in the same position (rare for us to do this) we eventually had to back off and get back to the east. We had to get south of Gothenburg just a few miles off the I-80 exit area for the next structured shot of this supercell. Oh we got just what we were looking for! Phenomenal base rotation!
Eventually we had backed off again as the hail core was approaching. Plus this cell was loosing its steam. We moved back to the I-80 corridor then south of Cozad Nebraska and this cell was in redevelopment mode and we had some waiting to do. Though not a long wait as this original cell fizzled out but we had one more chance for good structure south of Overten Nebraska. We headed to Loomis Nebraska for another treat to end the day. Oh did I say treat? We got a whole bunch more eye candy than expected.
Just to the east of Loomis Nebraska we encountered some incredible supercell structure. This storm wasn't going to be shy, and she eventually showed us some teeth.
Personal Note: For some odd reason I didn't clear my memory card on my last chase, and I ran out of room on my SD Card. I had to stop shooting after the wall cloud was right over my location my Loomis Nebraska. I didn't have time to pull out my spare card and load it due to the strength and this fast moving cell. This storm cell became outflow dominate and man do I mean dominate. We got caught in the outflow boundary several times with tons of gustnadoes and almost haboobish. I did have my trusty camera with me... I was in the drivers seat so when we had a chance, I did capture some incredible pics that blew me away literally.
All in all. I'm not always about catching the tornado. I had some good friends and fellow storm chasers along side that day. In my opinion... just another EPIC chase day in Nebraska!!! Woot Woot. More to come!

2012 was a dry summer and the storm season was few & far between. Last recorded rainfall for us was back in early June. Working constantly I had that Sunday evening off and was able to get out to get a few snaps of this oncoming storm.
Finally received some much needed moisture. Strong thunderstorms had formed out in western Nebraska & were dying as they were entering southwest Buffalo county here in South Central Nebraska.
No warnings on this storm but she was producing some exceptional views of the core. Incredible cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes pummeled the earth . This storm cell was proceeding to the northeast from the southwest. It crested right on the northern outskirts of the city. Couldn't have asked for better light & storm. Many photographic gems in this set!

Knowing about the moderate risk of severe storms on the eastern side of Colorado and the western side of Nebraska, I had planned out the day perfectly to intercept the back side of the cells about 4pm Mountain time.
Now into Yuma County Colorado, this was when all the action began. Tornado warning was in effect just a few miles north of Hwy 34 and I had a good sight on the backend of this developing severe storm.
From Fort Morgan Colorado via Hwy 34/6 back to Nebraska was my route back behind the developing cells. To honestly say... I wasn't disappointed. The open cloudscapes of Colorado are a photographers dream.

Tons of noise in the original captures. A few are little blurry due to the 45-50+ mph outflow winds. I couldn't keep the camera steady. Every pic here was worth it though!
It took long time to rework these images....

We gathered out gear and headed back to Grant Nebraska then south to Imperial. Destination was Hwy 6 and to get far enough south to get back in front of this storm.
We had 4 TVS (Indicated Rotation via Radar) on our way through Grant Nebraska and then to Imperial.
Beleive me when I say it was nasty to drive though it was. Huge hail and wind that almost blew us off the road more than once. But we eventually made it back out in front of the storm cell and headed to Hamlet Nebraska for another Tornado Warning.
What we witnessed was epic!

This was my first opportunity to catch this frivolous night of electrical delights! (I've caught many more in 2023)
Yeah, I've caught some lightning earlier in 2023, but I actually dedicate time specifically for lighting. This was one of those nights. In fact the first one of 2023.

I couldn't believe it... Another late night storm and this one was brief but packed a punch and some nice lightning as it passed to the northwest of Kearney
Usually by this time in any year here in Nebraska our storm season is way over. Not that way in 2021. Our severe weather pattern stayed active all the way til late December 2021.

I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had missed a few of the other tornados that afternoon in Northern Yuma County. Coming from south to north I had to position myself correctly. Chaser Convergence was also in full swing so there were not may open areas to choose from.
For best pics of a Tornado and to be safe about it a storm such as this was moving North by Northeast... strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... Behind the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraft) It's all about timing, and I honestly didn't think it would produce a tornado til it was well west of my location. That was going to be the wrong guess... Though when I went due north of Wray I had a good viewing point but not in the safest location as you see.
I got lucky this day as...In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.
Staying as safe as I could I wouldn't bail till it was about a mile away then I would head north again to a safer / better viewing position.

Greetings Everyone, I haven't posted many new pics since last chase season and the 2020 Severe Weather Season is upon us.

My last storm chase of the 2015 season was at hand....
This set of captures were taken at the end of August 2015. Even though there have been plenty of small cells over the months of September and til the end of October. This was by far the last supercell that I got to chase, and it was a once in a lifetime photographic opportunity, but I say that for every chase....because it is!
Storms now moving from Custer County to to Northeast Dawson county. Had to hall a$$ north to get set up and find a good location to get some great snaps. Off to Hwy 40 NW to intercept this storm cell in eastern Dawson county!

On the hunt again for severe weather. Little did I know that this would be my last chase in August 2019.
A strong developing system of storms were predicted that afternoon for western Nebraska and eastern Colorado. Though this was the first storm of the day to become severe and we were already in route.
I-80 Westbound towards Ogallala Nebraska the mammatus clouds means good instability and when they show before the storm I know that this means a good chance for what I'm looking for.

Taken just days after I had smashed my Nikon D50. Strong Gust front took out best camera. Another night storm with outflow came a calling. Even with a sand bag attached to the tripod it still blew it straight over. I was only about a foot away but the wind when the storm hit was nasty bad and I wasn't able to make a saving grab.
So this set of images were taken with 5mp LG phone that I simply hated. I had no other means of taking pics. Weird how this set of images would become one of my most viewed here on Flickr.
Now for the rest of the story....
Seriously, I wasn't even going to chase that afternoon. I was bummed out about my camera and lens. Now in a few unfix able pieces. My daughter Alyssa & I were heading over to good friends to BBQ, and have some Fresh Nebraska Sweet Corn & other yummies...
Just leaving my pad, we had looked out to the Northwest, and my jaw about dropped. It was still 20+ Miles away, I just knew she was coming our way... due to radar and warnings out for western counties... but the outskirts of city limits the clouds told the tale... She was going to be a photographic beauty.
My Daughter was hungry for the BBQ but she also wanted to see this storm up close and personal. I gave her a choice... BBQ or Storm.....she wanted to see the storm and we were off to our storm adventure! It was one of the best photographic shelf clouds of 2011! Glad we were there to capture this!

Very late in the season for tornadic supercells but we had some this day. Good Friend and fellow Chaser Myles Nelson, it was his birthday. So to celebrate we had to get a game plan on.
Night before there was none predicted for any severe storms, but mother nature had different plans. Waking up, and checking the morning model scans we had a much different story. We planned accordingly and things panned out for us to follow the first storms to pop to the east of Hastings Nebraska.
This cell packed to early punch but eventually faded out by Bruning Nebraska. Luckily the 2nd cell we had been monitoring just to the south of Hastings was maturing and had the all the right stuff. We scooted west to get into position. Then via Hwy 14, just south of Nelson Nebraska was our first TVS marker, and a scans showed a decent hail core developing. We were in luck as this storm was building and maturing fast.
Once this first event was on top of us, we positioned south and east of Superior Nebraska via Hwy 8 to do it again. Where we met up with several other chasers that were on the hunt. Good to see good friends again as this cell was again in a maturing stage producing come incredible cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning.
Eventually we had to punch through the core via west of Superior as we again head south into Kansas via Hwy 14. East of Mankato Kansas we ran into the 3.5 inch hail core next to Formoso Kansas and we had to stay ahead of this to stay out of the core. North of Courtland Kansas the cell was on our tail and we were in the notch. Surreal cloud structure could be seen as we had pushed east.
West of Scandia we ended up in a Tornado Warning was it had push up right against us. A Train had blocked out route east and it got a little never racking. Though the train eventually passed an we were able to escape the worst part of the storm. Ending up just to the west of Scandia Kansas were we experienced 3 inch hail. I have a few new dents but we decided wisely not to go any further due to the rain rapped tornado in this storm. Got by a building and had some protection from the winds and hail.
It was the end of the video's chase day and another tale to tell in my storm chasing adventures for 2019!

Beautiful stormscapes were developing to my northwest. I had already decided to chase the cells to my south, but I paused for a few moments to get my bearings.
I have to be honest. In all my years of chasing storms here in Nebraska, I have never seen so many layers of mist at different developing levels.
The sun was setting and this created an exquisite light show. Camera in hand.... click click click.....!

Under the base of this storm, we already has meso detection. TVS markers were on radar and it was moving directly to Ogallala Nebraska.
We got there on time and stopped right off of the interstate at a gas station with the best view.
This highly photographic supercell was maturing. But at this moment... This storm decided to weaken just a bit as we waited for this cell to produced a nader. Lost the TVS marker so we didn't stay long and packed the gear and headed south towards Grant Nebraska.

Oh there was a creature in the clouds that evening... This storm reminded me of the "Creature Feature" Something I grew up with when I was a kid. Saturday Night was always full of freight. There was an episode where the clouds came alive and came after whoever saw them... bla bla bla
It was one of those nights where the severe storms were just south of the city. Nighttime thunderheads shooting off just an wicked amount of cloud to cloud lightning. Every few seconds we would have another display of some crystalized forked lightning.

June was a tough month... Not only did I have my transmission go out on the truck. Their would be NO storm chasing for about 3 weeks. Of course its June and we did have few good storms pass though and I was disappointed that we couldn't go get em all.
Back in the saddle for this last June storm. Nice for almost end of season development. Under the base this storm no tornado was going to form due to it being undercut. Nice rotation in this cell though, and it was what we came for.

Primed and Set for a new year of Chasing Severe Weather throughout Tornado Alley. This was close to home and not a huge jaunt across several states to find those severe storms. Instead this was just really a test run for the real thing coming soon to our neck of the woods.
Pulse storms forming over a marginal risk area for the afternoon. First of the year in fact so the possibility of a few severe storms were not out of the question.
All in all... It was good to get out and dust the cobwebs off the old dslr! Some nice views from North Central Kansas and South Central Nebraska that afternoon and evening!

It was to be another excellent chase day in Southwest Nebraska... but first after a bad accident... Got TBoned in the Grocery Store Parking lot.... I thought my truck was done for that day. I was ready to leave and start my storm chasin' for that afternoon. When accident happened it was about noon. After a 2 hour wait for police and all the drama that goes with that kind of thing.... I took a hammer and pounded out the fender and bumper. I wasn't going to miss this chase day... I was on my way. I was off to to one of the best photographic June chase days for 2016.
Moderate risk this day. Storms started early on the Wyoming Nebraska border. I was watching some of the chasers @ www.stormviewlive.com. Incredible shelf cloud ground scraper was producing some incredible outflow by Julesburg Colorado. Storm front was pushing slowly to the southeast. Due my accident I defiantly didn't have time to get that far west to intercept. Decided to head to the southwest. Intercept the front via Hwy 6-34, southwest of Kearney Nebraska.
Even though this storm was weakening. It was still highly dynamic in structure. Drove all this way after extra effort. It was worth my time!

In September, Nebraska’s sunsets transform into breathtaking spectacles, amplified by the dramatic presence of thunderstorms and supercells. As summer’s heat begins to wane, the Great Plains remain a hotbed for dynamic weather, with warm, moist air clashing against cooler fronts to create vibrant, fiery skies. The sun dips below the horizon, painting the vast Nebraska landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple, often intensified by towering cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds, illuminated by the fading light, glow with an ethereal quality, their edges tinged with gold as the sun’s rays refract through the atmosphere. The open plains offer an unobstructed view, making the interplay of light and storm clouds a daily masterpiece, where the sinking sun seems to set the sky ablaze against the silhouette of distant fields.
For those in rural areas, watching a September supercell at sunset is an unforgettable experience. The air grows heavy with the scent of rain, and the distant rumble of thunder provides a soundtrack to the visual spectacle. Farmers and storm chasers alike pause to witness the sky’s drama, knowing that these storms can bring both vital rain and potential destruction to the region’s corn and soybean fields. The fleeting moments when the sun’s last rays pierce through breaks in the storm clouds create a sense of timelessness, connecting the observer to the raw, untamed spirit of the Plains. In Nebraska, September sunsets paired with thunderstorms and supercells are not just weather events—they’re a vivid reminder of nature’s ability to inspire wonder and respect in equal measure.

We had a long drive back to home! Behind the storm that afternoon was a full lit sky of mammatus cloud. We had to wait for the sun to peek out behind the clouds but that is when the real magic happened. The sky at dusk was simply epic!
An experienced... storm chaser knows that after the storm is one of the most photogenic parts of the storm. Some of the best shots I've ever taken have been on the backside of a thunderstorm. I call them Thundersets!
Now...if your not a storm chaser and one is patient enough to wait for the base of the storm to move with the limits of the sunset light. Special things can happen, have your camera ready there is always some magic happening!
This was that experience. There is no place like Nebraska!
