It was a dry May for most of it. So it was a few weeks of no storms in south central Nebraska. Finally we had a moderate risk but it was for Wyoming & Colorado. Then it was to move due east into western Nebraska. Planned ahead headed west for the event. A moderate risk day with PDS warnings on the supercells that we were chasing that afternoon.
We knew where we wanted to chase and had planned it out perfectly. From Kearney to Scottsbluff NE. From Scottsbluff to Torrington Wy, and then Hwy 85 South. We ended up parked right under a 4g cell tower, close to the Hwy 85 & junction 216 with time to spare. Perfect position, perfect light, and we had perfect cell signal to stream this event live.
Now the official report says this is an E-F0 Tornado. It only lasted about 4 4 1/2 minuets. Approximate path length was 2.8 miles, and max width was 80 yards. It was the first of the day to touchdown in Wyoming.

Proud to say that this was my first time that my video stream was on the Weather Channel via StormViewLive (the media broker & was with in 2017) These were the photos that coincided with that day...
(This video is NOT my video but via youtube user "The Weather Nutz" of this same storm but from the opposite view of mine... excellent video youtu.be/7dP6PI1zV5Q)

Rare for Nebraska in November that is....
There was some risk of severe weather that afternoon. In fact.... way out of season severe weather. There was just enough instability by afternoon to allow the thunderstorms to develop, strengthen, and even spin up a few tornadoes in the 4-5 p.m. CST time frame.
I had a 5 hour drive back from Missouri and was exhausted. Plus I had to work in a few hours so chasing this storm was just not possible that afternoon. But I did venture out to capture a few snaps of that afternoons events.
Pictured here were the cells effecting the Red Cloud to Clay Center Nebraska areas. I was just to the south of the I-80 Minden Interchange. Found a cozy spot without any powerlines and pointed my camera to the east southeast.
Some amazing captures to finalize my severe weather photography for 2016

I had forgotten about this set of images... To be truthful, I also found this micro SD card on the floor of my truck about a week ago. Luckily I didn't vacuum it up after the snowstorm...
Went all the way out to Western Nebraska for this chase day. Excellent setup for severe weather on the Nebraska Colorado Border. Though I didn't plan it out correctly to say the least. My timing was off (when does that happen???) when trying to catch this batch of storm cells. Not to be disappointed EVER. I make the most of what's coming my way. If it's photogenic, you know I'll be taking snaps.
Hence my drive home from a bust chase day. Happy I am to find this card a with a few gems on it. My last imagery of 2022.

Our Severe Weather seasons is coming to a close. One last severe weather setup and it would be worth our time to chase.
We were in a moderate risk that afternoon with a 5% chance of tornadoes. Warnings had already been issued for Dawson County just off to our west.
Didn't have to wait very long a Tornado Warning was issued and we had just got to our area to setup and were pointing due southwest.
The video is a close up of what we saw that day. So one might be able to see the actual distance we were away from this storm from these images.
Get to close and all you get is grey and no structure. No photographic value of a storm. To far away and you can't get the detail. So to you have to find that perfect spot and we did that afternoon!

Well its be close to a month since I've actually been out chasing. July 2019 in South Central Nebraska has been hot and dry... for the most part. Another reason for my absence is my trusty storm chasing truck is on her last leg. I've had transmission problems and the wheel bearings are going out on 2 of the tires. Its 20 years old and she has taken good care of me and my storm chasing adventures over the past. I'm going to have to retire her instead of putting more money into the till for her to get fixed. I have new truck being custom built for storm chasing in 2020. She has been ordered and will be picking it up in September.
Oh yeah... we have had severe storms in the State of Nebraska, both West and East throughout the month of July. By the time they would even get to our location in the South Central Region of the state....they were just rain showers. More flooding rains to the east a about a week ago 3rd time for some of the folks in the state. I'm sure the farmers are not to happy and are waiting for harvest to start.
So with that being said...I did get out just once in July. On a night that the storms were perking and it was late. Extremely tired but you all know when it comes to lightning, I don't miss a beat! Opportunities are rare this time of year and I really never miss a storm. Especially if it is close! I couldn't resist!

June 2020 coming to a close. Though mother nature is just ramping up storms out here on the plains of Nebraska.
Another afternoon of severe weather and parts of Central and South Central Nebraska would be under the gun later that evening. Gear ready and packed we were off for another Severe Weather Adventure!
Though the storms we wanted to catch that afternoon decided to form and then weaken then form to our due north northwest again for the afternoon. Too far north for us to chase as they were developing and moving fast northwest.
Caught would we could for that afternoon and waited for the lightning fest that would be to the southeast and east of Kearney. No direct intercept this day... But mother nature was talking...

36 Years ago, with a peaked curiosity, I dove feverishly into the world of storm chasing and well, the rest is history. Fast forward a few years and my current journey in storm photography & videography has unlocked a completely new life that I never imagined would exist. Oh how my adventures continue...
Mother Nature definitely orchestrated her magic on this first storm chase of the season. Warm front had positioned itself right over the state of Nebraska. Pulling in all that warm moist air from the south created the perfect conditions for severe thunderstorm development. I was on the hunt & wouldn't be denied this day.
I got to witness 3 very sculptured Supercells that afternoon....
As I was exiting & had moved out of range of the Franklin Nebraska Supercell. I was in route to Wilcox Nebraska due to the next storm had just crested over the horizon. Didn't need radar to tell me this.
Was just west of Wilcox & the dirt roads hadn't been rained on yet. (I usually don't travel them anymore if they are) Now a Few miles due west of Wilcox & south to watch this 2nd Supercell develop.
This was the backside of the exiting Franklin Nebraska cell I had just encountered now to my due southeast.

Exactly what the title states... I felt I was jinxed that evening. Every time I got close it would die off. Nice structure, good development. But it was not to be. It happens sometimes...
A few good opportunities but you had to know where to look. That part I have covered. Took advantage of what was viable for this set of images.
The sky is filled with thick, swirling clouds illuminated by a warm glow. Below, a flat landscape stretches with hints of distant trees.

After a full afternoon of chasing storms in South Central Nebraska, we had another front moving in from the southeast right after midnight. It was packed with 60 mph winds, quarter sized hail, and one hell of a shelf cloud.
Accompanied by some phenomenal cloud to ground lighting, and the city of Kearney Nebraska ambient light, I was able to get some beautiful color with the storm before she entered they city limits.
I was just glad that I had a chance to chase these cells in the month of October as our storm season for 2014 was about to end.

I had several chances at storms over the month of July into Early August... I did make an several attempts... resulting in several good sunsets (I'll post these at a later time), just no good storms to capture ... until this one.
This would be the start to several sets of images expanding from Mid August to late September and a few chases in October.
10:00pm, and the rain was coming down in sheets. Radar had several cells starting to mature, and warnings were just issued for Northern Buffalo County. Can you say right place right time...
This Ominous Shelf Cloud had several cloud to cloud and cloud to ground shots. Lots of positive lighting in front of this cell. It was incredible hard to see since it was misting and then hard rain right before these captures!

Now back in South Central Nebraska... We were about to experience the strongest outflow boundary of the year. 110-120 mph winds were accompanied by this super strong beast. Tons of cloud to cloud lightning and beautiful arcus shelf cloud structure was beautiful view as she approached from the southwest.
Now moving almost directly due east we had to jimmy south to Alma Nebraska from Hwy 89 to get back in front of this monster. Believe it or not, the calm before the storm was evident here. No wind until the shelf came over our heads and then we got hit hard. Luckily we had gear already prepped and put away as headed north as soon as this hit our location.
Though you know me... I waited till the very last second to get these captures!

Early August 2023...
Storms were predicted & delivered right after midnight. Severe Warned for high winds & hail... This was a sculptured outflow dominate storm. I learned a long time ago doing night storm photography that you have some extra light to make this happen. Not the light from the storm but I use the city lights to help paint the sky.
Sitting now on the so called edge of the city (always expanding). One the few last places I can get good clear view of the sky to the west without power-lines... Probably the last year I can take snaps from this location since there is construction going on all around.
I forgot one of my nice 4k cams with extra sensitivity for night... Figures I had everything ready but forgot to load the battery.
Cam in hand I went to town with this set of images with this most impressive ominous overnight shelf cloud. This was an Night Time Eye Candy Storm. What a beauty!

Late evening on hot and humid August evening in Nebraska. Warnings popped up about an hour before this storm was even visible to the eye over the horizon at sunset.
Spectacular Colors emitting from this stacked supercell. Cloud to Cloud Lightning shooting off every few seconds made this a storm chasers dreamscape.
Gear in hand that evening I traveled north out of Odessa Nebraska. Now about 2 miles to the east of Amherst Nebraska. This storm was strengthening and moving almost due south, southeast, meaning it was coming right at my location.
It would be a Historic Event to capture! Now remastered to the original color with no enhancements. Enjoy!

2012 was a dry summer and the storm season was few & far between. Last recorded rainfall for us was back in early June. Working constantly I had that Sunday evening off and was able to get out to get a few snaps of this oncoming storm.
Finally received some much needed moisture. Strong thunderstorms had formed out in western Nebraska & were dying as they were entering southwest Buffalo county here in South Central Nebraska.
No warnings on this storm but she was producing some exceptional views of the core. Incredible cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes pummeled the earth . This storm cell was proceeding to the northeast from the southwest. It crested right on the northern outskirts of the city. Couldn't have asked for better light & storm. Many photographic gems in this set!

Moved to the south to get ahead of this monster once again! TVS Warnings and Tornado Warnings were in front and back of our location as we traveled to Trenton Nebraska. Again we didn't see any tornadoes. If they were there they were rain wrapped.
We honestly should not have been in the thick of it with no visibility but that's whats called punching the core to get to the other side of the storm.
Back in front of this we had lost our warning for the storm but within 10 mins of being there another tornado warning popped up right in front of us.
Radar had indicated the tornado just to the northwest (right side of this image) but we couldn't see it due to the intensity of the rainfall. We had just a few mins before the core of the storm passed over us. These are the images before that event!

Day 2 of chasing the plains of Wyoming. With a good chance of seeing what we came for. We had plans in place to be in position early to catch that's days first round of severe storms in Central Wyoming.
Moving west via Hwy 26 through Torrington, Lingle, Fort Laramie, Guernsey, then north on I-25 to Glendo where we would stop to watch the scudnado form and not produce.
Packed the gear up after this event and moved south to be ahead of part 2 of that afternoon and evenings cells that were to develop shortly after this first event.
After the jaunt south to Pine Bluff Wyoming we headed to Bushnell Nebraska. About 15 miles from Pine Bluff Wyoming to watch this next storm build and eventually move west into Nebraska. We didn't want to be under the base of this storm due to the hail core. So we backed off and awaited the storm to develop right at sunset!

Another Incredible Nebraska Skyscape. Beautiful July ambient light, against a dying thunderstorm. Nope it's not severe but it's what I do when the light is right. Plus, I was super sick... A few days away from being forced into the hospital. I'm better now, and thankful.. that's a story to come!
I honestly took extra time on these captures. I was using a new filter on my new lens. So no added color or any adjustments to the image in Photoshop on this set. Now I had to bring them through Photoshop from raw... but that's it and of course the pano's are done separately.
Also... I only had one camera...for video that evening. Otherwise you would have seen this first storm cross over and you would have seen some sweet Nebraska thunderstorm views. Just to the east southeast. July Mammatus... these are just as sweet as this video... Just captures though...These have been added to this set.
It seemed the sicker I got, the better the photography I took... It was only about 10 days till I was forced into the hospital. I shouldn't have been out. But you don't get captures like this if you don't go try to catch them...
I was sick but had a blast, and what I caught was just Awesome!

Arrived right on time... timed it out perfectly. Now directly in its path... A slow mover so this was going to be a photographic treat.. with a (ef 0) Nader to boot.

After a phenomenal day of watching the Supercell Thunderheads bubble and boil... I wasn't finished.
Small cells were still forming to my north just off of the city limits of Kearney. This one didn't last long but it sure was capturing my interest. Camera gear ready, I head out once again for a few brief shots. Full moon and some incredible ambient light helped out these shot with exposure.

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!
I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best photography to date...
Just north of Arapahoe Nebraska, the first non severe cells of the day were putting on a spectacular display. I pulled off to get some incredible Nebraska stormscapes!
*** Editor Notes ***
Greetings Everyone, I haven't posted many new pics since last chase season and the 2020 is upon us. Looking for our first set of storms in the coming weeks and I'll be streaming live and of course some of the best storm photography one could ask for.
2020 Update...I've been revamping how I do things. One of those things is to go back and correct how I did my post processing of images. Several Years of over Colorizing over Saturation Adding color... etc. Yes I'm guilty of doing so and I have been going back and replacing thousands of images in hundreds of sets over these past few months here on Flickr my Fine Arts America Site.
The May 7, 2016 Colorado Tornado Event was by far one of my favorite chase days to date. I was able to capture the full genesis of a tornado. From birth to death. It was a quest of mine to do this in a photography medium. Epic severe weather structure, like once in a lifetime structure to capture. But post processing was a nightmare. The images came out well ... Defined but over colored over saturated etc.
Instead of replacing the images this will be a whole new set with a few hundred new images that I didn't post on the original set back in 2016. I've thought about re-editing these images for a long time and they are finally done. No Altercations what so ever. No Added Light, Color, Contrast.
I've brought them directly from RAW. Simply the way I should have done it in the first place!

Now just north of Norton Kansas, storm cells were in severe warning stages and we were in the perfect position to get some excellent captures.
This cell was building and now shifting to the southeast. Incredible cc & cg lightning was illuminating the sky.

Its truly what I wait for every season...
Non Severe late August Nebraska Thunderstorms!
Conditions were just right, almost perfect for capturing some incredible CG Nebraska Lightning. These very slow moving storm cells building just to west northwest of Kearney provided this opportunity that early morning.
The storm was building and rapidly moving to the west northwest. I had about a 1/2 hour before sunrise as it now right over the top of my location. I had to move just about a mile south and try to catch the final moments of this storm.

Finally a good chase day I can brag about....
A moderate risk day in South Central Nebraska, with storm forming on the western side of Dawson County & counties due south and southwest.
The first batch of storms were over and the severe warnings now were all pushing north northeast. I pushed down to Overton & the I-80 Interchange as strong new cells were developing to my southwest.
I stopped a few times by Overton to get some nice captures from the back side of the storm cells that were departing before the next cells moved in.

Just spent 2 full weeks in ICU @ hospital. Honestly, I was still not feeling the best... but I have this passion for lightning.
This storm was about 50 miles away tracking from Grand Island Nebraska down to the south near Hastings Nebraska. From my POV it was almost due west of my location. My better half... & I had a busy day and I was glad to be home after that little jaunt. Long day means early to bed. Though she hit the sack and I stayed up to check up on my storm chasing duties and what I had missed over the past 2 weeks...
All of my gear was charged and ready to go.. but I was under strict orders not to go out... but I did anyway. lol I had to sneak out to do so.
I just went out to one of my places I know for good open skies and took a few snaps with my new camera and lens. They didn't turn out the best due to I wasn't use to this new setup. Though not bad for not knowing the gear and of course I wasn't supposed to be out.
It all turned out good. I didn't get into trouble after I told her. Pics came out well for what I went through to get them here!

A new job, and with restricted hours to do what I do best... capture the moments of Nebraska...Really, this was my last opportunity to capture some good ole Nebraska stormscapes before, what I would have thought to be the seasons end.
Again Mother Nature didn't disappoint, as some severe warned storms were weakening as they were entering southern Buffalo County, in south central Nebraska

Lightning is the main reason why I chase storms. I'm fascinated by the pulses of light it produces. So by placing myself in direct line of a nasty overnight supercell... It is what I call FUN.
This was a spectacle of light & storm. Producing Cloud to Cloud Lightning almost every 3 seconds. It was by far the best night time lightning fest of 2023! So Far....

Out of the hospital and some time behind me to heal. With my wife's permission I was allowed to enjoy a few more chase days before the storm season ended. We get this small opportunity in the month of September for severe weather and I wasn't going to miss a beat.
Severe storms now starting to form just to the southwest of South Central Nebraska. Warnings were already issued for 4 counties south of us and it was building and moving my way.
Since I haven't been out in close to a month, I packed up all the gear and went out early to catch some beautiful light and bubbling thunderheads before before the show...

"Stacked Plates" is storm chasers jargon for us to describe a strongly striated mesocyclone! Oh this was a B E A U T Y!
Late August 2011. This was a LP (Low Precip) Storm, and she didn't drop an ounce of rain. If anything did come down it evaporated before it hit the ground. It was so damn hot and humid and was just happy the sun was blocked out by the clouds and then this came along. Along with the severe warning it had on it a few counties north of my location as it moved south.
You can clearly see the mid-level inflow bands. Better known as striations. These were so well defined it was jaw dropping!
When the storm got close enough I couldn't really see or verify a wall cloud of any type. We had a few lowerings, but nothing significant to get me to report it. So I really can't call this a supercell. But it sure was fun one to witness!

Some of my best severe weather photography came out of this night supercell. This was a storm to remember in 2014.
This supercell was at first a very slow mover moving southeast about 9-10mph before it even reached northern Buffalo County. I had to work late and I was considering not to even go out. Glad I made an effort to do so....
Most of these captures were north of Odessa Nebraska US, and some in the city limits of Kearney,

Mother nature gave South Central Nebraska a few days break from the constant rain. I shouldn't complain. We are close to the end of our rainy season. Though... this is Nebraska where we can have severe weather breakout anytime...as this storm cell did.
Late night, early morning cells were moving along a boundary. We only had a 30% chance of storms. Storms there were out in the Nebraska Panhandle died and the reformed about 1:00 am just to the west and northwest of Buffalo County in South Central Nebraska.
This was a photographic beast as I just a few miles to the east of Kearney. I wanted to use the city lights to illuminate the storm as it pushed to the southeast. It simply has got to be my favorite night chase of the year. Close to home and incredible structure!

Mid May 2026
At the time of these images we normally are in the thick of our severe weather season. But 2026 has been active but not here in south central Nebraska.
We need the rain so I can't complain. This was the first of many to come of severe weather events. Wind & small hail accompanied this storm cell as it passed through.
Dark mammatus clouds loom over a peaceful field, creating a striking contrast with the bright horizon. The scene captures the tension between calm and impending weathe

Storm Chasing Video from afternoon / evening on Flickr Click Here
Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...
First few shots of the day as this already severe warned storm was approaching from the northwest of my current location. Got in alignment of where I thought I had the best possible chance for pics & video. An open view with no power lines. Which is rare. Even in Nebraska.
There were actually 2 storm cells. Both were severe warned. I was on the outer boundaries of the western storm. The eastern storm was going to eventually merge with this storm & become one.
The lean or tilt in this storm meant business. Nothing to take away its energy for doing its building process. Rotation was imminent, though question was would this storm produce a tornado?

I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had missed a few of the other tornados that afternoon in Northern Yuma County. Coming from south to north I had to position myself correctly. Chaser Convergence was also in full swing so there were not may open areas to choose from.
For best pics of a Tornado and to be safe about it a storm such as this was moving North by Northeast... strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... Behind the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraft) It's all about timing, and I honestly didn't think it would produce a tornado til it was well west of my location. That was going to be the wrong guess... Though when I went due north of Wray I had a good viewing point but not in the safest location as you see.
I got lucky this day as...In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.
Staying as safe as I could I wouldn't bail till it was about a mile away then I would head north again to a safer / better viewing position.

We were to have storm cells develop on this day, and they were predicted not to be severe. They were not... Though when the perfect opportunity for light & shadow comes into view, I couldn't resist.
I grabbed my gear and set out to capture some of the beautiful landscape/cloudscapes from May 2015. The storm cells were developing through south central Nebraska were weak but highly photogenic.
