I’d been watching the weather forecasts for the week, and it looked like Thursday or Friday would be the days to escape from the house once again with the camera, and do a bit of exploring. Thursday came, and with it clouds, but clearing by the afternoon, but Friday looked like a gem. Clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and a cool breeze, so Friday it was.
I once again wanted to walk along the Brooklyn waterfront, now that the Brooklyn Bridge Park was virtually finished, and I once again wanted to cross the Brooklyn Bridge, but the train schedule was such that I opted to first ride into Manhattan, and then take the subway to City Hall and begin my journey starting with the Brooklyn Bridge, and then ending at the LIRR Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. An estimated walking distance of around six + miles!
As it was summer, and the height of tourist season, the walk across the bridge was crowded to say the least. One improvement was that vendors could no longer set up shop along the walkway impeding the flow of traffic, and it was being enforced, which greatly helped. About halfway across the bridge, looking out across the harbor was a really unusual sight, a very large ocean liner. What was it? And could I get closer to it, as I progressed on the journey, and yes I would eventually get much closer as I walked south along the Brooklyn Bridge Park. It turned out to be the Queen Mary 2, one of the last genuine ocean liners which still crossed the Atlantic to England. It was docked at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal at Red Hook, and I learned it was to set sail that very evening. This was the big surprise of the walk.
And so we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, roamed around the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighborhood, had lunch, and then began the long walk through the now mostly completed Brooklyn Bridge Park beginning at the Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge and down the shoreline opposite lower Manhattan and Governors Island. With the clear skies visibility was excellent, and there were many excellent places for photos. A cooperative Tern posed for several photos along the way, and at pier six were several sailing Schooners and a former FDNY fire boat.
It was then east on Joralemon St to the Fulton Street Mall, Flatbush Ave and then to the LIRR Atlantic Terminal for the ride back home. And then the pressing question comes up, who was Joralemon? Well in 1805, he was the first person to build a brick house in Brooklyn, so a street was named after him!

I LOVED this sweater. the fit was customized and perfect. The sleeves are a little short, but that's because I finished knitting it in Japan and ran out of yarn. There's enough yarn in Seattle to finish them off better. The buttons which were perfect for the sweater were a gift from my friend Nancy. She brought them back from a little town near Nimes, France.
However, I lost the sweater in Nagasaki somewhere between the Peace Park and the harbor. Sigh.
How do you like this new format of the weather forecast? Again, this is for New Four City on the fictional planet. I like this format even better than the other format I was using before because it really looks like The Weather Channel now. This is today's forecast (as of upload date).
My friend is in the hospital and someone gave him an almanac to pass the time away. I have never heard of Harrowsmith’s, but I am happy to believe every single printed word! They are forecasting a very mild winter in Ontario, with only a bit of snow in February, and an early Spring! Thank you El Niño!
I grabbed a screen shot of this the other night - a 'do funny' in the system I guess... but wouldn't be all that surprising for Winnipeg.
