The final image from a much looked-forward-to trip back out to the west coast of Scotland with Iain (Highlandscape) today. With an (unusually) excellent forecast for the area between Torridon and Assynt we chose en-route to start at Torridon and work our way north. Mellon Udrigle became our target for the sunset; although facing generally east, we hoped for some colour on the snow-dusted mountains. It was a bracing (bitingly cold!) wind on the beach and a pleasant rather than spectacular sunset but it nicely capped off a very enjoyable day.

The forecast this morning was for clear skies and mist, so I headed out for dawn at Laughton Woods. Initially there was a blanket of cloud overhead and no mist, but I hung around after sunrise. Glad I did, the sky broke and as the sun came out mist arrived. On the walk back to the car I passed a plantation which had been part cleared...normally it wouldn't grab my attention. It's a subtle shot but the mist hugged the ground and hung in the tree tops, leaving the Silver Birch to stand out in contrast to the pines. Like I say subtle, but I think it might be my favourite autumn shot this year.

The raindrops say it all really.

Sunday's forecast for Glen Affric looked promising for some potential mist so I managed to persuade Iain (Highlandscape) along for a sunrise shoot. We were initially restricted to some 'minimalist' mist shots, disappointed that the mist and low cloud blocked any chance of some sunrise colour. However, all was about to change as the sun broke through the mist tops, with the next 30 mins or so providing some of the best light and environmental conditions I have witnessed,

Please Please no big icons! thanks!

Just a fun shot for today.

If i really need to see snow I can go shake this guy up a little :)

It is always snowing in his world!

No texture added, no Picnik just a little exposure adjustment :).

Itsss Tuesday.

Title borrowed from H.E.Bates.

Another wonderful view from last Tuesday. The weather forecast said rain for today, whereas it's been fine for most of the day, when I've not been able to get out.

Better viewed large.

Thank you for your favourites. :O)

Looks like we have some cold and sunny winter days ahead. Certainly better than the dark and rainy weather of the last months. River Werre in Bad Oeynhausen, Ostwestfalen, Germany

No Risk-it, No Biscuit - The weather forecast sounded ominous with temps in the negatives. Thank goodness Elin, the ranch owner, soothed our concerns by explaining how they operate in these conditions all the time.

No such thing as bad weather, only bad equipment.

Just like she said, we dressed for the temps, stayed close to the ranch house and trusted her experience.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on here so I hope you’re all doing well! Haven’t really been doing much with the camera lately as this time of year really doesn’t appeal to me that much. Also, I’ve recently invested in a drone, so I’ve been learning the whole video side of things.

Anyways, last night I headed out to an old favourite location of mine in the Yorkshire Dales called Twistleton Scar. For anyone that isn’t familiar, its a great little spot covered in limestone rocks; perfect for landscape photography! It’s a quiet spot too which comes as an added bonus!

The forecast was looking pretty promising so I decided to try a shot I’ve taken before but want to improve slightly. When I arrived on location, I had a bit of a gut feeling to go off and find something new and thankfully, I followed that instinct. Had to wander around for a while to find something that worked but I came across this rather interesting looking tree that worked well with another tree in the background. After tweaking myself and my tripod into some awkward positions to get the composition right, it was just a matter of praying and waiting for the light to make an appearance. After about half an hour, the sun managed to come out through a small gap on the horizon which completely changed the landscape into something you’d imagine to see in a dream!

I’ve certainly missed the feeling you get when everything comes together and you get a shot you’re happy with! Hopefully, you’ll be seeing more frequent posts from me over the next few weeks/months!

It's quite cold out this morning. The ground is frozen and the air is crisp! I took this out of the breezeway door. This was a very fleeting sunrise.

Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. Just a standard summer day in Glasgow - enjoy!

The forecast for this morning was clear and sunny but obviously nobody told Rothley about it...

British Railways Standard 5 4-6-0 73156 sounded (& looked) great as it accelerated away from the 10mph limit out of Rothley station with the 10.00 ex-Loughborough Santa Express to Leicester North.

Got lots of snow to greet us on getting up this morning! One of those days when you're glad to be retired and don't have to drive anywhere. : )

Step in to the new year. May all your dreams come true in 2021

The weather forecasts for most of California were terrible for this morning when the Lyrid Meteor Shower were due to peak, so I did what any idiot night photographer would do; drove to Crater Lake where the forecast was better!

The Lyrids were a bit of a disappointment, but I got to make this panorama of the Milky Way over the lake. Not an original idea, but has always been on my bucket list.

The meteors in this image (there are 3, but one is very faint) have been scaled and time-shifted into this panorama. Their location and size are accurate. I shot meteors from 11pm to 4am with my A7S and the Nikon 14-24mm at 14mm to get the most sky. When the Milky Way was in the right spot, I switched to the Rokinon 24mm in portrait mode and did the pano images. Then switched back to the 14mm to keep capturing meteors.

Geeky Stuff:

Panorama: Sony A7S, Rokinon 24mm, f/1.4 at f/1.4. 14 images merged with PTGui and then heavily cropped. Each image was 15s, ISO12,800

Meteors: Sony A7S, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 at 14mm and f/2.8. Each image at 20s, ISO12,800. Over 600 images taken over 4 hours yielded 4 meteors total. Three made it into this image

Post Processing: Merged the 24mm images to a pano using PTGui. I then scaled the 14mm images to match the scale of the 24mm pano and composited the 3 meteors into their exact positions as if they had occurred during the pano exposures.

Snow is forecast for the next few days, so that's a good reason to counteract it with pictures.

Having been working in Ely and with the weather forecast late in the afternoon not being for wall-to-wall cloud, I decided to have my first session of this winter attempting sunset shots here, with my main target being 4E20 from Felixstowe to Masborough, due at Manea at 16.12. However, with 4L87 (Tees Dock to Felixstowe) currently running with a loco at each end, there was also something fifteen or twenty minutes earlier (in addition to a few passenger trains). I usually stand further back and use a longer lens, but today decided to try my new 31mm lens and stand closer.

The sun dropped into the bank of cloud on the horizon as I was driving down the road from Pymoor, but the clouds high in the sky were still orange underneath when I set up. But I wasn't quick enough for the first DMU, and by the time 4L87 appeared (with no containers at the front, but plenty at the back) the colour had gone. There was therefore very little colour in the sky for most of the trains I shot, but after 4E20 the orange close to the horizon seemed to be increasing, so I hung on for the "FLIRT" going the other way about five minutes later.

There was more colour in the sky for this than for the other trains, although I've increased the colour saturation a little (but not changed the colour temperature - the white balance was set to daylight rather than auto correct). I also had to lighten the image, as I'd underexposed by a little more than perhaps I should have for everything I photographed. I also wasn't sure how good the silhouette was, as the floodwater seemed to be reflecting the dark clouds - but there was more silhouette than I thought.

Wasn't that bad, we didn't get the dump of snow the weather guys forecast.

An email from Steve and a follow-up phone call led to a plan for me to meet him and Rob in Glen Affric for a sunrise shoot before work! Fine for them as they weren't working.

It has been a long day!

The forecast was for mist, but I would call it fog, however, when the surface of the loch calmed it provided some interesting reflections.

We didn't see the sunrise, there was no colour in the sky, it just became lighter in our nearly monochrome world.

Watery low clouds and high level stratus signal an approaching front.

The forecast was for a mix of sun and clouds, but it was a bluebird day as far as we were concerned. We've done this scramble many times, but never tire of it. We walked around 6.5 km's return distance, gaining, with all the ups and downs 769 m's of elevation, taking 4 hours to do so.

It was quite damp out there today! I haven't taken a photo out of the front door in a long time; it's been too cold, but today, it got into the 50s, so it was warm enough.

Here is today's sunrise from our golden California rolling hills during the hot summer time.

Again, this sunrise burn was predicted by Yiupai sunrise/sunset forecast service.

I climbed the mountain in the mist and cloud, with a howling wind on the summit ridge. I was so hoping for a clearance which the forecast had "promised", so found some crags out of the wind and got my packed lunch out and sent some messages to friends and family. Two hours or so later the clearance came - partial and brief, but spectacular! ... and I could cross something off my bucket list too.....

16, 12, 19, 36, 20, 19. The temperature forecast (Fahrenheit) for the next six days. I keep telling myself that I'm coming out swinging photographically the minute the weather breaks this year, but the weather has been throwing some serious punches without letup. Several hours of planned shooting quickly becomes 20 minutes of shooting, an hour to warm up at a coffee shop/bookstore, then back to the refuge of a warm house. But I'm telling you, when the weather breaks - and it will - oh, it's on.

Now, back to my coffee... ;)
