The forecast for yesterday was sunshine and cloud. However they neglected to say the sunshine had been cancelled and the light was somewhat wanting. But beggars can't be choosers so in the immortal words of the late Ernie Wise, here is one wot I took. I just like the look on the owl who by the way didn't play ball and kept it's distance all afternoon.

In EXPLORE 13 December 2021

This was taken on Friday 10 December. I had heard of this and the weather forecast looked good for a an excellent blue hour. The art installation is by British Artist Bruce Munro who is best known for immersive large-scale light-based installations inspired largely by his interest in shared human experience. Field of Blooms has been presented internationally, including at Uluru, Australia – the original source of inspiration for the Artist. The lights gradually change colour and the wires connecting the bulbs are also lit up. There are 1000 lights and they are displayed in the 600 year old Cloisters of Chichester Cathedral. They are free to view and are on display until 30 January

The picture was taken with a tripod with a Sony A77ii with a Sigma 10-20mm lens at 16mm. I took 3 shots for HDR processed in Photomatix using tone balancer for a more natural look. In Photoshop I used Topaz Clarity plugin for more detail and Topaz DeNoise..

Looking forward, looking back …

Empty, blunt, loose, dim,

hidden Way! Ever-present,

born before the gods.

—Lao Tse, “Tao Te Ching” ch4

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?

Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?

I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains

I’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways

I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests

I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans

I’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard

And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard

And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

—Bob Dylan, A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall

There were signs to the north that the forecaster would be right.

Taken a couple of weeks ago. A sunset was forecast - after all the rain and cloudy skies I got very excited so toddled along the beach and waited for the event to happen - sadly not to be but as I had taken all my kit and it was freezing cold on the beach I did take a few shots to try and make it worthwhile! This was a 2.5 minute exposure. I was hoping for a sunset tonight and even though forecast sadly not to be yet again!!

Ambition and an MSC cruise ship in harbour in St Georges, Granada. Through the morning rain clouds came over with more rain in the afternoon as well.

The forecast had called for clouds, but I woke up at 4 anyway. When I looked out from my hotel window, the tip of Mount Fuji was already visible — clear and silent in the pre-dawn haze.

I quickly dressed and rushed outside, knowing I was probably ten minutes too late to reach a cleaner, unobstructed vantage point. I didn’t expect to see Fuji’s elusive reflection either, so I settled for a spot just in front of the hotel.

And that’s when my Arca-Swiss ballhead screw jammed — for the first time ever. As the sky began to open up, the reflection suddenly emerged, just for a moment. I scrambled, fought with my gear, and managed to fire off a few rushed, imperfect frames.

They weren’t perfect. But they held the truth of that morning — chaotic, fleeting, and quiet — exactly as it happened.

Today's Forecast: Blistering Heat and Bone-Dry! Chances of this dry stream bed filling with water: Less than nil.

I had the questionably good fortune of spending a night camping in my vehicle in this foreboding and forsaken landscape. Nothing stirred during the day (except I did spot a lizard). After sunset, however, the desert came to life. I heard various types of critters making noises throughout a rather sleepless night.

is slowly disappearing. I went back to the same falls as the weather forecast for the coming week is pretty mild, which will result in melting ice. Might as well get some in before it's too late.

Dankin, Saskatchewan, Canada.

It's gonna be a clear and nice morning when the sun rise, 20 minutes later outside to take a shot of that sunrise.

It's got to be ............

Lulworth Cove & Stair Hole, Dorset (6 x 3 Bracketed)

Having been to Lulworth Cove the weekend before I knew I wanted to return to shoot the Stair Hole overlook. The forecast for last Saturday on most of the weather apps I use had clear blue skies but a couple had some high level cloud in the area. I decided to take a chance so it was another 4am wake-up and coffee in the car on the way down. As I was walking up the muddy path in the early part of blue hour I could see a bit of high level could around so crossed my fingers and kept going. As you can see from the photo I (and the other 2 Togs present) were rewarded with some lovely colours. After getting my single shots I shot the above as a set 6 sets of 3 bracket images (18 total) to get the extra width I wanted and with lots of overlap. Would have been nice if the tide was higher (it was close to low tide here) but then again if it were by the time I went down into Stair Hole I'd not have been able to get the shots I did there (yes more to come!).

I did later reward myself for the early start with a crab & Lobster burger from the food stall near the beach😋😋.

Thanks for viewing.

Daisy checked the weather forecast - happy Caturday!

The cloud forecast didn't eventuate so lots of driving meant a clear sky for sunrise.Shooting from Jones Beach as the big swell restricted access around the headland. I hadn't shot these comps before but I liked the reflections on the sand with perspective of the central 2 rocks.

So with the forecast of clear skies.... I mean really? I headed to Durdle this morning for the starburst window that is now well and truly underway.

That sliver of light, the tide on its way out meaning there was a pristine beach, it was just perfect!

There was only about half a dozen of us so not too much clash of the tripods!! The burst did get more intense but I think the earlier shots look a but more natural.

With the forecast for the next week in the 40s, decided to make the trip to Taughannock Falls this weekend before it all melts. This particular photo was on the trail alongside the creek on the way to the falls.

Retail Forecast: Gloomy

Not many cases left either. 20 Suitcases in that window... maybe. Not much left to sell us.

Yes, it is April but that does not mean that we are guaranteed no more snow. I remember one year we had a major storm on April 17. So I am keeping those snow tires on and the shovel in the trunk.

A bit different from yesterday view.

Rain was forecast and it did arrive.

Wild Atlantic Way in County Donegal, Ireland.

This scene holds some raw power, for me. Particularly in reflecting a lost opportunity I had to gain insight into a very different understanding of the world (an Amish perspective). I try to stay away from regret, as I think it rarely serves much good… and I generally try not to do anything I would regret. But I do try to support the notion that something I would regret can otherwise be valued as a learning experience. In this case: a lesson in a missed chance. Blogged if you want clarity to this story.

In this shot, there are some strange tones in the sky, and I believe this had to do with the window reflection of the train.

We were at Mimmo, watching floating flower seeds, I was only able to capture one of those properly but luckily it was in the correct place at the time lol

An ICM shot taken just gone 8am this morning.

The aurora forecast for this night was a geomagnetic storm with level G2 with kp 4-5.

All day it was raining and the sky was very overcast, and it was going to be the same all night. With the sadness of not being able to see my first very active aurora I went to sleep after dinner.

Around 4:30 AM, I woke up due to the noise of doors and people talking by the corridor. I looked out the window and what was a great surprise to see an impressive light show in the sky. I put on my clothes over my pajama, grabbed the camera and tripod and went to the car to drive the scarce 200m that separated the hotel from the black church.

I spent about 2 hours enjoying it until dawn. This was the magnificent show.

Watching a storm come in from Lake Michigan.

Wet weather was forecast for lunchtime so I headed for Glen Cannich for some photo-therapy and took a few shots looking west towards the approaching rain.

"Thinking about Portreath Friday." The message was accompanied by a screenshot of a weather forecast that promised some bracing conditions for anyone who was prepared to get wet and risk a certain amount of seawater coming into contact with their camera if they didn't keep their wits about them. It took me about half a second to consider my options before replying that I would be there.

The previous conversation on Whatsapp with my daughter Nicky had centred on the relative merits of varying brands of vegetarian chorizo style sausages, so this was a bit of a departure. Probably a good thing because seascape photography is surely a broader subject with a more enduring conversation potential than meat substitute products.

I hadn't been to Portreath recently, even though it's so close to home, passing the summer crowds and heading along the coast in favour of the wilder and more open Gwithian and the increased opportunities for solitude that it brings. But when there's weather like this, Portreath Monkey Hut at high tide becomes a magnet to me. As the nights close in it's also one of only two places I can really get to after work now. Another week or two and I'll be limited to weekends unless I want to try some more astro-photography on a freezing cold night.

Surprisingly, and to our relief in this era of social distancing we had the place to ourselves, hiding behind the big wall that protects us from the elements here, occasionally popping up like meerkats to scan the horizon and hastily steal a shot from the driving elements that were coming straight at us. At one point a man stood on the quay below us, and before we could say anything a huge roller dumped its contents all over him, chasing him back along the yards to the relative safety of the inner harbour area. Every so often a substantial plume of spray and foam would rise into the air, giving us a split second to turn our backs and guard our precious camera equipment as it landed all over us. At least we were in a safe place, despite what misgivings the scene might be offering you.

And so for a while we watched the light fade as Storm Alex, the first of the season and named by our friends from across the Channel in France, battered the coast. As ever I couldn't resist trying a slightly longer exposure despite the rain and seaspray coming straight at us on the back of a fierce wind. With the trusty shower cap resting on top of the camera I dialled in my settings and tried my best to compose the image. Choosing the moment to expose the camera to the world and take a shot before quickly replacing the shower cap was one of pure chance, although I did manage to grab a small collection of images that I could barely see on my screen. Processing the RAW files also proved difficult and this is one of many versions of the same shot that I'm still struggling with.

But what I love is the drama, with the ever photographed monkey hut almost disappearing into the white water around it. I can't think of a better way to spend a Friday evening than trying to capture an image of the elemental fury around me. This is the Cornwall I love. Wild, brooding and ever changing in its moods where every outing brings challenges and my waterproofs are always in the car. The winter months are often seemingly endless, but if they bring out a passion you can completely lose yourself in, then what's not to love about them?

It was overcast and the forecast called for a chance of showers. I didn't think I would be able to get in a photowalk, so I went to the Y for some exercise. When I got out a large, unforecast storm was approaching. I photographed the action from a school across from the park, so I would quickly be able to get in the car and escape when the rain started. Ultimately this storm dropped 3 inches of rain in just a couple of hours, causing some local flooding.

- Keefer Lake, Ontario, Canada -

I thought this image (from years gone by) a suitable post for today given that they are forecasting light snow this afternoon ... time to put the winter tires on the car ... they won't come off until April. :)

'Autumn Falls'

Autumn has fallen with its dismal grays,

Occluding light and warmth of Summer days.

Bright hued leaves sun’s final array,

Reds and golds their dying display,

Until wind and wet tear them from trees

And lay them to rest through winter’s freeze.

Farewell the long hours of prominent sun

As dusk pervades and gloom has won.

Unyielding steel skies, impervious, unfold

And spike the heart with cheerless cold.

Take up a lament for autumn’s chill

And Winter snows that make all still.

Although dark and loss do dismay,

The darkest night gives way to day.

A strident hope profits cheer,

For steadfast Spring will reappear

As surely, as night gives way to dawn,

Faith ignites and gloom is gone.

With some more sunny weather in the forecast I decided to give the RWE coal railways another visit, hoping to find better photo angles on the Hambachbahn. The Hambachbahn did indeed offer much better prospects than the Nordsüdbahn, but here too the trees are growing quickly. Due to all the disruptions due to coal protests and the extensive signage, I didnt dare try to do any tree clearing on the embankments. Most of my photos were only possible holding my camera over my head for an extra little bit of elevation. Thanks to the usual DB chaos I arrived an hour late but just after setting up a westbound empty rolled into view, even with a cobalt blue EL1. A good start I thought, but the rest of the day was a wash. All day the railway sent only eastbound trains while I was setup for westbounds, the two westbounds that did run came after shadows encroached on my position and running one after the other with no time to switch spots. Maybe there will some more sun soon and I can try again, preferably before the leafs return to the trees and make photography more difficult.

RWE EL1 546 is seen at Sinndorf after passing under the A4, the Niederaußem power plant can be seen in the background. This segment was built in 2014 to replace part of the line that would be swallowed up by the expansion of the Hambach open pit mine.

Really enjoyed getting out photographing along the Settle-Carlisle Railway over the weekend, especially getting to see a steam train I've never photographed before. Here, locomotive 7029 Clun Castle can be seen hauling the Cumbrian Mountaineer Express over the picturesque Arten Gill Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (which ironically is also in the county of Cumbria rather than North Yorkshire).

The forecast was pretty grim for the area, but I decided to head out regardless and was so pleased I did as the moody conditions were certainly to my preference. Although it was raining quite heavily as I was photographing, it was really calm with hardly any breeze so luckily the lens managed to stop dry. The calmness almost meant the steam trail was very impressive, as it can be see meandering off into the distance.

Forecast of fog in my local area encouraged me to visit this location.

The forecast for the storm around here was that it wouldn't really start building up until early in the morning. The milk is delivered overnight and I have to put a somewhat light box outside the door for the milk to go in. I hemmed it in against the house and between the wheelie bin on its side and a tub full of soil. When I went down at 7am it was still firmly there and I was able to bring it indoors with the bottles of milk. The situation is rather more complex at the back. It's too boisterous now to look out there.
