Another day with a forecast of low cloud and >95% chance of rain. In these conditions there isn't much else other than fast flowing rivers that are worthwhile capturing.

Today, we travelled to Buttermere via Cockermouth and Crummock Water to reach the foot of Scale Force, a huge waterfall that sits in a gorge on red pike and feeds Crummock Water via Scale Beck. It's actually the tallest waterfall in the Lake District at 170ft tall.

I've been to Buttermere a number of times and never seen Scale Force flowing as quickly as it was today. We could even hear it from over 1/2 a kilometre away.

After the heavy rains of the last two days on the spur of the moment I decided to bomb up to Bowlees, park the car and get some shots of the high and Low force waterfalls in spate.

Was scrolling back through the photo roll on my tablet the other night. Love doing this periodically as it helps connect me with my recent past. The photos represent almost anything and everything that occurs in my daily life. Some of it artistic, some just banal snippets and snapshots. But collectively it forms the tapestry that is my life. These photos help me remember things much more clearly than they otherwise would be if left to my aging memory. I've taken to using inexpensive photo processing apps on the tablet. Not to supplant my usual Photoshop work. But more to augment it. Each app brings a different look, and helps me see my work in a different light. Moreover, processing g on a tablet breaks me free of being bound to a desktop computer. It's a more causal and relaxed approach that often better suits my mindset. Particularly in the evening when I tend to shun computers. Anyway I was delighted to come across a series of photos on the tablet that I had thought were lost to a recent hard drive failure. These were from a session with model Katie back in autumn. I had done some creative processing some time back, and had simply forgotten about the exported images. This one really jumped out at me. The app created a rather shocking vision, even by my standards. It brought back an eerie vibe I picked up during the original shoot. A gifted artist in her own right, Katie appears in her everyday life as perfectly normal grad student. But the vintage clothing and the dreary setting of dead field corn transformed her into a wraith-like apparition. At times the photo session almost felt secondary to the dark vision that had sprung completely from imagination. The processing needed to be as compelling as the actual scene. Once you go this far, it's pointless to pull punches. This image totally summed up the mood. For me it's a delightfully dark blend of vintage photo, ghost picture, and scene from a horror film.

I thought I'd have an outing before my area goes in to Covid Tier 3 tomorrow. Revisited Scale Haw Force hoping, this time, for some autumnal colours but suspect I'd missed the best of it.

Caught the big bird on departure from Detroit Metro Airport today. Lucky guess on the runway route for departure. Because of the scenery, this is where I wanted it to happen.

Wandering up Low Force toward High Force Gill. I sometimes feel that landscape photography doesn't need to be a wide open vista to be a landscape image.

Yes, at times, my art gravitates to a darkened, storytelling place. Perhaps those are the times that hold the most meaning for me. Those moments feel 'fuller', more 'spiritual' … if that makes any sense.
