A quick stop at the Natural Bridge in Yoho National Park during busy season is always a challenge. I was able to be patient and wait for everyone to move for a few minutes and I bagged this shot. Turned out pretty nice. VLOG below.

Large heron with rusty head and streaky neck; juvenile is extensively rusty brown on upperparts. Favors fresh marshes with tall reeds and other vegetation. Often more retiring than Gray Heron and rarely seen in open situations. Only likely to be confused with larger and bulkier Gray Heron, which is paler and grayer overall, with a stouter bill. (eBird)

This was the most active Purple Heron we saw in Singapore. Striding down the hill towards to the pond, it was obviously intent on finding a snack. Most of the others that we saw were pretending to be statues.

Typical yellow and black Old World oriole. Male entirely golden-yellow apart from black wings and tail and a broad black band through the eyes. The tail and wings have yellow tips. The bill is deep pinkish. Female similar to the male but with more yellowish-green upperparts. Juveniles show streaked underparts. Found in a variety of forest habitats, including plantations and gardens; forages in forest canopy. (eBird)

We found six of these lovely orioles during an early morning walk around our resort. The resort grounds were full of birds but we were the only guests on this huge property. Apparently it had closed during Covid and never re-opened to the general public. We were very well looked after at this well-maintained, albeit empty, resort.

Very large (size of smaller albatross) with massive pale bill that always has a pinkish tip (often darker than rest of bill). Plumage varies; most birds dark overall or with whitish face, but some have very whitish head and underparts; does not have a white morph, unlike Southern Giant. Juveniles are sooty brown which fades to gray brown as they age. Widespread around Southern Oceans. Habits much like Southern Giant and the two readily associate together often following ships. (eBird)

We were out on an albatross hunt, when several of these giant-petrels came to visit. Defintely not shy, they came up to the boat in search of chum and had several rather disgraceful disagreements about who would get each morsel. Slightly smaller than the Albatrosses that showed up, they didn't let size get in the way of the food.

The Russian Chapel on the Vršič Pass is a Russian Orthodox chapel located on the Russian Road on the northern side of the Vršič Pass in northwestern Slovenia. The chapel, dedicated to Saint Vladimir, was built by Russian prisoners of war engaged in forced labor in the area during World War I. It serves as both a war memorial and a symbolic link between Slovenia and Russia.

Eye-searingly bright woodpecker decked out in primary colors. Combination of black face, pale eyes, yellow throat, green wings, bright red rump, and white belly is unmistakable. Males also have a bright red crown patch. Prefers dry deciduous and coniferous forests, usually in the lowlands and foothills. Moves about in small noisy bands. Song is a rollicking, rhythmic series of rather dry, husky yelps, somewhat reminiscent of chickens or deranged laughing, that often starts up seemingly out of nowhere. (eBird)

I love cold air, fresh air. I love the wind in my face. I love clouds scooting across the sky. I love to be outdoors and in the wilds.
It's summer now, but actually I hanker for winter. It may not be as colourful but I'm sure it's more interesting. I tried to cool down this mid summer shot to make it look more wintry, when being outdoors in the wilds gives me a rush. By the next winter I should well and truly be in the wilds. In long dark days I will find a mood to suit.
Does anybody have the word "Snowdonia" printed on any gear or clothing? It seems you are not allowed to have "Snowdonia" printed on your T-shirt because the name has been registered by JD Williams, the Manchester based company that slapped a cease and desist order on Eryri Eco Clothing which is based in Snowdonia. Eryri tried to register the name "Eryri" (Welsh for Snowdonia) but was told it could not because it is a place name, but at the same time was told it could not use the name "Snowdonia" because JD Williams have trademarked it. Doesn't this sort of stupidity in the world make your blood boil???? Too many lawyers stink.

This attractive diving duck often gathers by the thousands on lakes or bays in the winter. Males have cinnamon-colored head, yellow eye, and gray body. Females are plain brown overall, a lighter blond color than scaup and Ring-necked Duck. Also note evenly rounded head shape. About the size of Greater Scaup, but slightly larger than Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Duck—this can be helpful when they are together in mixed flocks. Best separated from Canvasback by head and bill shape and male’s darker gray body. Breeds on marshy freshwater ponds and lakes; winters in flocks on any large body of water, often mixed with other diving ducks. Dives frequently to reach submerged aquatic vegetation. (eBird)

The closest thing to a red and white bird that I could think of, with which to celebrate Canada Day. This little group were just a very few of the over 5000 Redheads on the lake that day. In places, the water looked red due to the huge number of these lovely ducks all in one spot.

The original owners of Italianate homes would often have been third or fourth generation Canadians, probably descended from United Empire Loyalists. The Loyalists were refugees. They left the newly formed United States because they disagreed with fundamental policies of the new republic, one of them being slavery. Many of the Loyalists left beautiful properties, large homes and good lives with only the belongings they could fit on their backs or in a wagon. They would have been pleased to see their descendants living in comfort. In addition, they would have been happy to see that their descendants had maintained the same moral principles that forced their own migration.70

Rather unremarkable and typical-looking small black-and-white woodpecker. Extent of “freckling” on the breast varies; Andaman birds are the most heavily marked, and Indonesian birds the palest. Crown is rose-red in males and black in females. Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker is quite similar, but larger, with a brighter red vent and a more tan-colored breast. Stripe-breasted Woodpecker is also quite similar, but even more brightly-colored below and even larger than Fulvous-beasted. Freckle-breasted inhabits open forest and edge up from lowlands up into foothills and lower montane areas. Gives short, sharp notes and trills. (eBird)

Unique-looking flycatcher with a gleamingly clean white throat and a strong rusty orange tinge to the brow and forehead. Overlaps with closely related White-gorgeted Flycatcher but lacks that species’s gray face and black border to the white throat patch. Inhabits foothill and montane forests, where it forages close to the ground in lower vegetation. Both flycatches and gleans for prey more actively. Song is a high, thin series of whistles; a simple version is “tee-tee-tew’, to which additional phrases may be added. Vocal for a flycatcher, and calls often, giving harsh rattles, chips and chiks, and high thin notes. (eBird)
-----------------
This little flycatcher was singing his heart out, with all his attention turned far from us. I don't think he ever turned around so that we could clearly see his white throat. Luckily, the rufous brow and the song clearly identified him.

Striking and unmistakable in most of range; the only sapsucker in eastern North America. Long, solid white wing patch helps distinguish it from Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers. Adult male has red cap and throat; females are similar but with white throat; juveniles are messy brownish-gray overall. The namesake yellow belly can be difficult to see and is sometimes almost absent. Often looks disheveled, especially in fall and winter. Compare with the extremely similar Red-naped Sapsucker, which barely overlaps in range. Note male Yellow-bellied has complete black border around red throat patch, and the white markings on the back are more extensive and messy. Occurs in almost any wooded habitat, breeding in the boreal forest across Canada and wintering as far south as Costa Rica. Like other sapsuckers, drills rows of sap wells into tree bark. Listen for irregular drumming (like morse code) and various nasal calls. (eBird)
-----------------
This is just one of the birds that we saw along the McKenna Trail. This female bird seems unusual to me as she appears to have less red on her forehead than I am used to seeing, but Sibley's Field Guide suggests that very occasionally a sapsucker might have an all-black cap. Maybe this is just a minor plumage variation.

Latest snowfall forced me to seek warmth in my photos from my India trip towards end of 2017. Though trip like this is always more a social visit, in the last two trips I made sure that I left some time to look for old world birds. Gelnhausen is a town and the capital of the Main-Kinzig-Kreis, in Hesse, Germany. It is located approximately 40 kilometers east of Frankfurt am Main, between the Vogelsberg mountains and the Spessart range at the river Kinzig. It is one of the eleven towns (urban municipalities) in the district. Gelnhausen has around 22,000 inhabitants.
Gelnhausen was founded by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1170, it is therefore nicknamed "Barbarossastadt". The place was chosen because it was at the intersection of the Via Regia imperial road between Frankfurt and Leipzig and several other major trade routes. Frederick had three villages connected by streets and surrounded by a wall. At the same time Gelnhausen received town privileges and a Kaiserpfalz was erected on an island of the Kinzig river. The emperor also granted trade privileges like the staple right which forced traveling merchants to offer their goods in the town for three days.
According to the Institut Géographique National from 1 January 2007 until July 2013 the geographic centre of the European Union was located on a wheat field outside the town.
Gelnhausen is located on the German Fairy Tale Route, a tourist route.

Boldly patterned, tiny bird, usually found in groups. Adult gray above, pale below, with yellow eye and black throat and mask separated by white, chestnut-washed flanks. Juvenile has gray rather than orange and lacks black on throat. Significant regional variation in exact facial patterning: Indochinese population birds have a gray crown (bright rufous in other populations) and Himalayan birds have an white oval brow patch. Forages acrobatically in small branches, sometimes hovering at the tips to extract invertebrates. Often difficult to see in dense trees; presence given away by high-pitched contact calls (“tsip”) and thin, rolling trills. Predominantly found in broadleaf and mixed forests in foothills and submontane areas, but can also range into lowlands. (eBird)
---------------
We ran into a small flock of these pretty and energetic birds in the mountains of Thailand. I just love their bold facial patterns that somehow seem better suited to a big bird, but perhaps their big personalities suffice.

McKenna's Marsh encompasses 10 hectares of land south of the 48 Road. It drains north through a water control structure to the Morell River, and south to the Cardigan River. As a large spring-fed headwater to two large river systems, it is a significant wetland for management and a fascinating trail for naturalists on the Confederation Trail. (text from information sign)

We found this beautiful section of PEI's Confederation Trail through eBird while looking for a good birding spot. The red lacewing is a species of heliconiine butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. This species can be found from the Indian subcontinent eastwards to South-East Asia and East Asia, the eastern limit being the Philippines, and the southern limit being Indonesia.
It is a medium-sized butterfly, with a wingspan reaching about 8–9 centimetres (3.1–3.5 in). The underwing pattern helps to disguise the shape of the butterfly, while the intense colour of the dorsal sides of the wings is a warning to predators that the red lacewing has a bad taste, deriving from the poisonous host plants of the caterpillars. The Northern Treeshrew is a small mammal belonging to the order Scandentia. It measures roughly 12 to 15 inches in length, including its long tail, and weighs between 200 to 300 grams (about 7 to 10 ounces). Although often confused with other small mammals, treeshrews are more closely related to primates than to squirrels, marking a special branch on the evolutionary tree.
The Northern Treeshrew plays a significant role in its ecosystem. As an omnivore, its diet consists of fruits, insects, and small vertebrates, which helps in seed dispersal and insect population control. These activities foster a balanced ecosystem, contributing to the health of the forest environment. In this way, treeshrews are crucial players in maintaining biodiversity.
Northern Treeshrews thrive in tropical and subtropical rainforests across Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. They prefer areas with high tree canopies, where they can easily forage for food and escape from predators. Treeshrews are often found in primary and secondary forests, as well as in cultivated areas, displaying a remarkable adaptability to different environments.
The Northern Treeshrew has a unique way of adapting to threats. When faced with danger, they may feign death, “playing dead” until the threat passes. Additionally, treeshrews are voracious eaters. They can consume their body weight in food each day! This key adaptation helps them maintain energy levels for their active lifestyle. (wwww.knowyourmammals.com)

This delightful little animal showed up several times while we were sitting in the hide. Looking for water and insects, it moved around the birds with no apparent fear although it is a prey animal for larger animals and probably raptors as well. We ran into treeshrews several times during the trip.

Apologies for repeating myself, but when I updated my home page I suddenly felt that these two needed to be together. Not in the least because of how they reflect the ideas behind the design of this pavilion.
"For the Sonsbeek pavilion Van Eyck provided an elementary structure of six parallel walls made out of concrete blocks, which he manipulated into a surprisingly rich and labyrinthine interior by inserting semicircular niches and apses into the rectilinear structure. Van Eyck described the result as an urban space intentionally conceived in opposition to the natural idyll of the nineteenth-century park, which followed the formal language of the English landscape garden.
The scenography aimed to create the experience of an almost spontaneous encounter with the artworks on display. This was not only communicated through the spatial typology of streets, alleys and small piazzas, but it was also crucially achieved by a relatively high density of artworks gathered together in the narrow spaces which forced one to walk by the sculptures in close proximity."
Holocaust memorial on Liberty Square, Thessaloniki. Liberty Square in 1943 was the place where many of Thessaloniki's 50 000 Jewish citizens were forced to assemble in order to be deported to Auschwitz. Almost all were murdered. Thessaloniki had the largest Jewish community in Greece and was the oldest one in Europe. When St Paul visited Thessaloniki around 50 AD, he preached in one of Salonica's three synagogues (probably in Ets Ahayim - Tree of Life. As we know, he had considerably more success with the "gentiles"). The monument is regularly vandalised. Leica M8, Voigtlaender 35/1.4.
Inside the night
There's a firelight
Between the worlds
At the edge of dark
Inside the fire
There's a blinding light
The flame that burns
Between the worlds
At the edge of the dark
When a shadow is forced into the light
It rips through your chest
And burns like a fire
When a shadow is forced into the light
And the blood of the serpents
Will burst under brightest stars
And the wings will carry these shadows and the light
And the scars like diamonds will cut
Through the veil of night
The clouds apart
And new stars alight
Between the worlds
In the sea of the sky
The sun and moon
Shines from your eyes
Lead me home
Through the map of skies
From the edge of the night
When a shadow (when a shadow) is forced into the light
It rips through your chest
And burns like a fire
When a shadow (when a shadow) is forced into the light
And the blood of the serpents
Will burst under brightest stars
And the wings will carry these shadow and the light
And the scars like diamonds will cut
Through the veil of night
At the edge of the dark, dark, dark, dark, dark, dark
At the heart of the dark, dark, dark, dark, dark, dark
At the edge of the dark
Where I stare night straight in the eye
And the demons of deep will arrive
From the wounds they bleed out their
Black blood like oil
And I spark the flame of the night
And I will melt these chains, and forge them as a crown
Drag those shadows to the light
From the heart of the dark, dark, dark, dark, dark, dark)
At the edge of the dark, dark, dark, dark, dark, dark
From the edge
When a shadow (when a shadow) is forced into the light
It rips through your chest
And burns like a fire

The range of the Berner Oberland from the summit of Galehorn, above Simplon pass. On the right, the beautiful pyramid of the Bietschhorn.
A furious, cold wind was blowing from the North, and taking this shot has been a pain. The route to the summit was exposed to the south and the summit ridge was a good shelter. But on the top, a flat, wide ridge, at 2.900m of elevation (9,500ft), the wind was truly unforgiving. Anyhow, the beautiful series of lights and shadows created by the clouds running fast over my head forced me to take twenty shots and to cross the entire summit to watch on the other side.
Hope you had a serene weekend.

The northern amber bumblebee. It is native to northern North America, where it occurs across Canada and Alaska and the northern and eastern contiguous United States.
This species is generally found in woodland habitat. It usually nests underground, and males congregate nearby to seek mates. This species feeds on several plant taxa, including milkvetches, thistles, wild blackberries, goldenrods, comfrey, clovers, and vetches. . (Wikipedia)

Well, I thought this was the Yellow-banded Bumblebee that the Park Services was trying to protect, but I was wrong. Still, I would not have noticed this bee if it had not been for the information signs outside the Visitor Centre. Unfortunately, many bumblebee species are declining so the Park Service planted a nectar garden to support and hopefully increase the local population. This species took advantage of the buffet provided for the Yellow-banded Bumblebees :-)

A very large bluish-purple waterbird with a red bill and forehead shield, as well as red legs and feet with long toes. The tail is flicked up often, revealing fluffy white “underpants.” Juveniles are duller than adults and lack the red bill and shield. An inhabitant of marshy, vegetated freshwater bodies such as swamps, rivers, and lakes; usually in small groups. Feeds, often clumsily, at muddy water edges, in reeds, and on floating vegetation. Makes short nasal grunts and croaking sounds. Formerly part of the species known as Purple Swamphen. (eBird)

The Tasmanian town of Sheffield in the north of the state is famous for its murals, and this one is without doubt, my personal favourite. A pseudo forced perspective shot of my 1/18th scale model 1930 Alfa Romeo by CMC models, taken with the backdrop of the main street of Sheffield in Tasmania. For those unfamiliar with my pseudo forced perspective shots, this is a background image of an older shot I took in Tasmania many years ago and is displayed on my hi-res 5K monitor. The car is on a tabletop (directly in front of the monitor) with a fake road base and lit with an LED desk lamp set on cool daylight. My fake road is usually much darker to match bitumen, but this is an experiment using a sheet of good old tracing paper to lighten it up a little to look more like smooth concrete. A bit too smooth I think, but it is experimental for now.
