Nothing About Us Without Us Is For Us was a public art event using obsolete technology to hurl language across Glasgow's River Clyde. Organised and conceived by artists TS Beall and Matt Baker, the project commissioned 15 artists to partner with 18 local organisations. Together, they delivered 6 weeks of activities, culminating in an event on Saturday 28 April, 2012 where over 1500 people sang, shouted, and sailed across the Clyde. Visitors to the Glasgow International Festival were invited to the Govan waterfront to participate in transmissions using human megaphones, siege engines, string-and-cup telephones, messages-in-bottles (‘The Govan Armada’), choral serenades, and more…

For the past three years that I've been gardening, there has been a fun little idea on my mind. Finally this year I've buttoned down and actually gotten to it. Graveyard garden markers. Brilliant? I know.
These ones were made with some old pieces of wood which had once been part of the fence around our bonfire pit. With years of weathering and ageing, these have just the right look and feel for what was desired. With a little paint they are a quick and easy project for my little garden beds and now there is something interesting to mark out where the carrots, beets, cantaloupes, regular jack-o-lantern pumpkins, and cinderella pumpkins lie. I have yet to make (and plant, for that matter) my corn, but it will come.

In our work, more and more interaction design, digital design, urban design, mobility design and strategic design is converging into the design of services, i.e. a well-considered eco-systemic platform that surrounds the activity, the device or the interaction. But to design a service well, we need to go beyond the simple model of touchpoint design or customer journey design. We need to be able to design for behavior and often design for behavioral change. To do this, weto really understand and model behaviors and this means harking back to the psychological, cognitive and biological underpinnings of behavior. During his talk Mark will discuss how to transfer insights and practices from the humanities into design concepts.

Overloon War Museum, NL - The Battle of Overloon
For more than four years, the Second World War more or less bypassed the East Brabant village of Overloon in The Netherlands. Of course, the inhabitants had seen German soldiers in their streets, but not the violence of war. This changed when the front reached the Peel village on 26 September 1944. The narrow strip of land between Eindhoven and Arnhem that was liberated during operation Market Garden slowly but surely became wider. The advance was going well, until the troops reached Overloon. The Germans had dug in here in order to stop the Allies. Inevitably, it came to skirmishes in the first four days. And during those first battles, the inhabitants of Overloon were compelled by the German soldiers to leave their homes. It was the beginning of a long evacuation.
On 30 September the Allies began a large attack with 7th American Armoured division, which had been called in specifically for this purpose. It was the beginning of one of the fiercest battles in Western Europe. For nine days, the American Sherman tanks tried to breach the German defences, but time and time again, they ran into German mines, artillery and Panther tanks. On 8 October, the Americans were relieved by the 11th British Armoured division and the 3rd British Infantry division, under command of major-general L. C. Whistler. After a few days of relative peace, a new attack would begin on 11 October. But due to heavy rainfall, that attack was postponed by a day. The area around Overloon by now had changed into one large puddle, meaning that the British tanks could do little. The infantry, together with the artillery, had the difficult task of breaking the German resistance.
On 12 October at 11.00 a.m., all hell broke loose. For an hour and a half, the Allies attacked the German defences with heavy artillery and air strikes. At least 40,000 shells flew around the Germans’ ears. When Overloon lay completely in ruins, the advance of the British began. House by house was conquered, at the cost of huge losses. And intense man-to-man fighting also took place in the woods. On 14 October in the afternoon, the last German stronghold in the village fell. With that, Overloon was liberated – although there was not much left of it...
But the German resistance was not yet broken. The Germans re-grouped in the woods between Overloon and Venray. The British gained ground only very slowly under harsh weather conditions. The greatest drama followed at the small river Loobeek. The whole area around the Loobeek, including the river itself, was laid with mines. Due to the torrential rain, the stream had become six meters wide. The Germans were able to prevent a bridge being spanned across water for a long time, but in the end it was done. The tanks that passed over the bridge immediately got stuck in the mud. Under murderous machine gun fire, the British tried to reach the other side over the bridge and through the water. The brook ran red with their blood, and thus got the nickname 'Blood Brook'. In the evening of 16 October, the British managed to cross en masse. Three days later, Venray was also taken after heavy house-to-house fighting, which meant the end of the great battle.
The Allies had not experienced such intense opposition since the Normandy beaches in June. Hundreds of Allied soldiers were killed. The number of German soldiers who died remains unknown; it is estimated that in Overloon and Venray, a total of more than a thousand soldiers died, and at least the same number were injured.

These two combatants, who share a powerful hatred for each other, did show that they are capable of setting aside their differences for a common goal. In Round One, Ms. Aran and Ridley squared off against the Black Ops agents Solid Snake and Liquid Snake. Despite the agents best efforts, including the piloting of a nuclear powered mecha, Samus’ skill at facing enemies much larger than her came in handy as she and Ridley annihilated the two assassins with no real challenge. The final score: 5-0.
Round Two brought an interesting challenge as they went toe-toe with Mario and Bowser. In order to face the Sci-Fi Slaughterhouses, Bowser had to become Giga Bowser, a giant bloodthirsty being that thrives on destruction. Mario was given several powerups, including his pyrokinesis and ability to become liquid metal, among others. Still, even with those abilities added on, Samus and Ridley’s abilities and weaponry gave them a decided edge. The final score: 5-0 with Samus and Ridley dusting debris off their shoulders and moving on to the Championship.
Their opponents: Link and Ganondorf. This match was a little more interesting as it matched Fantasy VS Sci-Fi. Link’s weaponry and transformation allowed him to attack Ridley and hold his own for some time. Samus, no stranger to giant beasts, went toe to toe with Ganondorf in Ganon form. His energy attacks provided him some cover and defense against the she-tank. In the end, Link and his nemesis fell with a score of 5-1.
Semi-Finals. In one of the most spirited fights in the Playoff Challenge, Samus and Ridley went up against two more assassins. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. This was tough for both sides as the advanced weaponry of Samus and Ridley proved a deterrent to the ninjas. But, their versatility and agility allowed them to keep their distance until the right moment. However, Samus and Ridley’s combined brutality made sure that the right moment never came. In the end, Team Metroid rose to the top with a score of 5-4.
The moment of truth had arrived- The Final Showdown. Samus and Ridley would face the other undefeated team: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader; two futuristic fighting teams squaring off in the original Dome. When the combatants entered the arena, no one could have foreseen the slaughter to come as Samus and Ridley promptly showed that faith in the Force was misplaced. In a stunning 5-1 victory, Samus and Ridley took the title of champion!
What a ride! Honestly, I can’t speak for everyone, but I never saw that coming. Samus and Ridley proved themselves an unstoppable machine of fury that pummeled their opponents and took the title. Well done, Team Metroid.

Survivors and descendants of victims of 20th century genocides, Roxanne Makasdjian (Armenian genocide), Peter Li (Nanjing), Dr. Steven Sloan (The Holocaust), Alen Krajcin (Bosnia), Willis Shalita (Bosnia) and Samuel Garang Akau (Southern Sudan) led 100 participants in a torch walk. They handed a symbolic Olympic torch from
one to the next and finally to Mohamed Suleiman, a Darfuri, who carried the torch to the stage.
The Honorable Barbara Lee (U.S. House of Rep., CA-9th District) delivered a rousing keynote speech urging the U.S. Government to take effective and prompt action to end the Darfur genocide. Danny Glover, acclaimed actor and human rights activist, highlighted the crisis in the Congo. Nikki Serapio (Director, Americans Against the Darfur Genocide (http:///www.OurPledge.org) and SF Bay Area Darfur Coalition member) directed his remarks to China and to Sudan President Al-Bashir, highlighting Bashir’s latest obstruction of plans to deploy peacekeepers to Darfur. Rabbi Lee Bycel (Executive Director, Western Region, AJWS) led participants in a very moving die-in. And, Rabbi Henry Shreibman as the Master of Ceremonies inspired the crowd to ratchet up their activism.
Mohamed Suleiman spoke to China on behalf of the people of Darfur: "...my people ...have nothing but nightmare for the fifth consecutive year. They ask me questions I can not answer. ... Why is China giving money to Al-Bashir’s government for oil when China knows he is committing genocide against us?
