This reminds me of a scene from one of my all time favorite movies: Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.
I'm guessing that they are nesting nearby and are searching for food on the beach below - which explains the bulk of the flock.
No birds were added to the photo or cloned - I however cloned away a bird or two that were partially in frame... Shame on me. ;)

This E9 was built for the Union Pacific railroad back in September 1955 as their UP 957 and served them well, until it's sale to Amtrak, where it would become their AMTK 430. Amtrak retired the classic streamliner in 1982 and it found it's way to Alaska working for the Alaska Railroad where it became their ARR 2401. ARR shed the locomotive and William Gardner of Northern Railcar Corporation picked it up along with ARR 2402 which was former Milwaukee Road 32A. The 2401 was patched and renumbered 10A to pinch hit for Mr. Gardner's Scenic Rail Dining train out of Brown Deer. After the Scenic Rail Dining venture went south, or west through divorce proceedings, Gardner was able to keep the 10A and 10C and they were painted into the beautiful crimson and gray scheme. A few years later, Mr Gardner added a E9 B unit to the consist, making it the finest looking executive set of locomotives around. After WATCO took control of the WSOR, they had no desire or need for the beautiful units and shed them. The 101 would go to the Friends of 261 where it wears a handsome pseudo Milwaukee Road scheme for their passenger operation. 102 ended up at the Illinois Railroad Museum where it remains in it's crimson and gray scheme. 103, former UP, AMTK, ARR 2401, WSOR 103, ended up as SLRG 103 on the Iowa Pacific. The 103 is now up for auction and the Friends of 261 would really like to add it to their collection to match the 32A. I can't get the link to work for donations there, but if interested go to friends of 261, so they can hopefully add this well maintained locomotive to their roster.

Went for a nice drive over to Long Reef this morning, with the promise of approx 60% cloud. For once, the apps were correct, however....
The cloud was in the wrong place...
Yes, they were in the sky, just not the part of the sky I needed them to be in...
I wanted to be shooting from where the guy in the photo is standing. I waited, and watched, and waited a bit more, but from where I was standing (at the top of the hill, looking down towards the reef and water), there was just nothing in the sky worth shooting.
So, as to not completely waste the morning, off down I went to the bottom of the hill, and shot upwards, to where the clouds actually were.
Sometimes, you just have to make do with what you have been given...

An outbound Camden Line MARC train for Washington was pushing through Carroll Interlocking on a beautiful summer morning in 2008.
MARC GP40WH-2 66 had been through here many times as it was built for the Baltimore and Ohio as GP40 4062 in 1971. It was rebuilt by MK with parts of a former Burlington Northern F45 to create the unholy abomination of steel that you see before you.
After MARC was finished with the 66, it headed nawth to Bahston, where it worked for the MBTA for a wicked bit and current whereabouts are unknown per a quick google search.
For the 12 months for dogs toy challenge (& no, the puppy is not the toy :-) The big pig has always been Sibley's favorite toy, ever since her first Christmas with us. And Nancy (SantaFeFCRs) made sure that her daughter Dart would have her own little pig, & left it on the front porch, keeping a proper social distance for this challenging time---

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.
On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably.
These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, and having moved from professional Nikon equipment to consumer bodies and lenses, I travel light less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 22.893+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

Looe, the Cornish for which is ‘Logh’, meaning deep water inlet, is a small coastal town and fishing port in south-east Cornwall.
In medieval times there were two towns on opposite banks of the River Looe. East Looe includes the fishing harbour, the main shopping centre and the sandiest beach. West Looe is quieter, but also has shops, restaurants and hotels, and leads to Hannafore with its fine views of Looe Island. The two towns are now one, joined by a bridge across the Looe river.
Looe is the second largest fishing port in Cornwall, supporting a fleet of trawlers, potters and netters together with an expanding number of hand-line fishermen.
The majority of the Looe fleet consists of day boats, meaning they go to sea and return each day, ensuring that their fish is fresh and of the highest quality (slush-ice bins are carried on board even the smallest boats).
Fish are landed at the market throughout the day and are stored in refrigerators until the next auction, beginning at 6.00am on weekdays.

For Freight Car Friday here's a then and now comparison. This is a look at some articulated double stack well cars entrained on Norfolk Southern train 264 (intermodal Park Manor Yard in Chicago to Ayer, MA) running as train Z264 on CSXT trackage rights seen crossing the ancient double stone arch bridge over the icy Quabog River at about MP 75.5 on modern day CSXT's Boston Subdivision, the once and forever Boston and Albany Railroad. This is the new routing for this service as described in the previous post and plainly illustrates one of the main reasons why....the ability to double stack containers, something that was precluded from happening on its traditional ex Boston and Maine routing because of restricted clearances inside the 4.75 mile long Hoosac Tunnel.
This train always features dozens of JB Hunt Containers as the Arkansas carrier has a partnership with Norfolk Southern and BNSF and is an anchor customer for this train. JB Hunt is the fourth largest trucking company in the US by revenue an began business in 1961 growing from 5 trucks to a fleet of 13,000. More importantly the company owns the largest fleet of privately owned containers in the US with over 100,000 and plans to grow to 150K!
This commitment to intermodal goes back to company founder Johnnie Bryan Hunt's landmark 1989 deal with then Santa Fe Railroad president Mike Haverty.

For 'MacroMondays' theme of 'superstition'.
Isn't it a superstition, an irrational belief, that you must have flowers for a funeral. And the idea must go back a very long time. There is a Neanderthal grave in Iraq, within the Shanidar Caves where a group of ancient corpses had been surrounded in plant and floral remains.
We tend to remember the life and death of those we love and the final memory of them is set at a funeral service. Seeing our loved one surrounded by beautiful and heartfelt arrangements of plants and flowers can help create a lasting final impression that can bring smiles or tears.
For many of us the death of a faithful animal probably needs to be marked in some way. What to do with the remains - bury or cremate? A very dear friend of mine has taken her cat's ashes from house to house when she has moved. Reminded of this I have Joe's ashes in a decorated box - decorated of course with a plant tribute.

I was with my friend Ben and his family… they were loving the trip around NZ for sure. I got this photo of Ben as he was walking along the beach… it was a windy and wild day and the waves were super intense. In fact, when we got back in the helicopter, a huge wave came and washed up under the chopper!

Something different. No bokeh today (sometimes I've got to do it). I had to stand in this spot for a while to get the path with no people on (there are some people in the distance though), but every time I tried to get a shot, someone would walk/cycle/skateboard into my shot. Now, if I trying for bokeh people, that would be fine, but instead, I probably looked like I was lost or something just standing there. :)
Happy Thursday! The weekend is in sight! I've looking forward to some quality time with my camera. I haven't picked it up for several weeks, and with the days getting really short, it's hard to find time or the light to get anything worth it. I always seem to be using the same lens recently, which is fine, but I do think I need to take some other lenses out for a spin this weekend. Maybe The Beast (macro lens)... or I might try and see if the garden birds co-operate with my big zoom lenses. We'll see... :)

Just right from the fountain in the background behind the trees you see the steeple of the Cathedral, more to the centre the spire of the Hausmann Tower of the Residential Palace and at the right edge the Rampart Pavilion of the Zwinger.
Der Zwinger ist ein Gebäudekomplex mit Gartenanlagen in Dresden. Das unter der Leitung des Architekten Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann und des Bildhauers Balthasar Permoser errichtete Gesamtkunstwerk aus Architektur, Plastik und Malerei gehört zu den bedeutenden Bauwerken des Barocks und ist neben der Frauenkirche das bekannteste Baudenkmal Dresdens. Sein Name Zwinger geht auf die im Mittelalter übliche Bezeichnung für einen Festungsteil zwischen der äußeren und inneren Festungsmauer zurück, obschon der Zwinger bereits bei Baubeginn keine dem Namen entsprechende Funktion mehr erfüllte.
Der Zwinger entstand ab 1709 als Orangerie und Garten sowie als repräsentatives Festareal. Seine reich verzierten Pavillons und die von Balustraden, Figuren und Vasen gesäumten Galerien zeugen von der Prachtentfaltung während der Regentschaft des Kurfürsten Friedrich August I. (auch „August der Starke“ genannt) und seines dadurch ausgedrückten Machtanspruchs. In der ursprünglichen Konzeption des Kurfürsten war der Zwinger als Vorhof eines neuen Schlosses vorgesehen, das den Platz bis zur Elbe einnehmen sollte; daher blieb der Zwinger zur Elbseite hin zunächst unbebaut (provisorisch mit einer Mauer abgeschlossen). Die Planungen zu einem Schlossneubau wurden nach dem Tod August des Starken aufgegeben, und mit der Abkehr vom Barock verlor der Zwinger zunächst an Bedeutung. Erst über ein Jahrhundert später schloss ihn der Architekt Gottfried Semper mit der Sempergalerie zur Elbe hin ab.

The Zwinger is a building complex with gardens in Dresden. Its name that means 'bailey' derives from what had stood before in this place on the ramparts of the city. Built under the direction of the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser, the Gesamtkunstwerk of architecture, sculpture and painting is one of the most important buildings of the baroque period and, along with Our Lady's Church, is the most famous architectural monument in Dresden. Its name Zwinger comes from the term used in the Middle Ages for a part of the fortress between the outer and inner fortification walls, although the Zwinger no longer fulfilled a function corresponding to its name when construction began.
The Zwinger was built from 1709 onwards as an orangery and garden and as a representative festival area. Its richly decorated pavilions and the galleries lined with balustrades, figures and vases bear witness to the splendour of the reign of Elector Frederick August I (also known as "August the Strong") and his claim to power. In the elector's original concept, the Zwinger was intended as the forecourt of a new palace, which was to occupy the square up to the Elbe; for this reason, the Zwinger remained undeveloped towards the Elbe side for the time being (provisionally closed off with a wall). The plans for a new palace were abandoned after the death of Augustus the Strong, and with the turning away from the Baroque, the Zwinger initially lost its importance. It was not until over a century later that the architect Gottfried Semper completed it with the Semper Gallery facing the Elbe.
Opened in 1855, the Semper Gallery was one of the most important German museum projects of the 19th century and enabled the extension of the use of the Zwinger as a museum complex, which had grown under the influence of the respective periods since the 18th century. The air raids on Dresden on 13 and 14 February 1945 hit the Zwinger hard and caused extensive destruction. Since its reconstruction in the 1950s and 1960s, the Zwinger has housed the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Mathematical-Physical Salon and the Porcelain Collection. Although the original purpose of the Zwinger as an orangery, garden and representative festival area has been relegated to the background, the latter is still maintained with the performance of musical and theatre events.

So Ive been away for a while because ive been starting pin hole photography and film which are both going great, ill scan some in for you guys to see. So I'm not promising ill be back but ill certainly be more available.
gonna go see the Hunger Games again today! SOOOO EXCITED!
as you probably already know, i don't have my camera. it needs to be fixed and it should take a month. it's been one week already and i miss taking pictures so much. today, as i was going from school, the sun was shining. after extremely long time. the sun showed it's face i barely remembered and it made me happy. first thought was-i wish i had my camera. and it made me sad that i didn't have it.
why should not having my camera make me sad? i still see what i see. and it should still make me happy. i realized i take pictures because i want to share them. that's also good, but i don't always take them for myself, i think of sharing it first. i feel like if i don't share a moment, it's meaningless. i don't want to. i want to experience it, without capturing it, without sharing it.
so this month, is for myself. i won't be sharing. i share so much sometimes. i won't take pictures of moments, of feelings. i will experience it, i will feel it, i will live it. and for once, i will keep the memory only in my heart, not in a picture, not in a blog post, not in sharing. it will be fully mine.
some moments just can't be captured, or shared, or said. it has to stay unknown to everyone, but the one whom it belongs to. this month belongs to me and my heart. sharing everything with Him, in different ways than photography this time.

also, i have photoshop. and i have no idea how to use it, i seriously suck. i hope to get better. picnik was so easy to use and i had my way of editing. it's hard to get used to something new, but i hope to fall in love with it soon. if you have any tips, i'd be happy to hear them.

For around one hundred and fifty years Long Eaton, Derbyshire was a major lace manufacturing centre and Harrington Mill was the largest of the lace mills in the town. It is still standing and now used by other businesses and is seen here on the 12th February 2019.
In 1885 local building contractor Poxon and Rice won the tender for the building of the first phase of the Harrington Mills in Leopold Street, Long Eaton. It opened for business in January 1887 with the second phase of the building completed by Wheatley and Maule in 1888. The large mill was 550 feet long and four stores high, containing over one million bricks. The semi circular turrets along one side housed the staircases to the landings of the various lace manufacturers who occupied the building. At its peak Harrington Mill contained standings for 255 lace machines and was the largest of all the tenement mills in Long Eaton. The standings were rented out, allowing smaller enterprises to flourish and at one point Harrington Mill housed 26 separate lace manufacturing companies.

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway operates former C&O GP9 5833 as their regular power for trains throughout the year. It's no different today as it hauls a train load of happy kids on its Santa Train excursion from Nelsonville to Logan, OH and return. The engineer of C&O 5833 waives as he "speeds" through Haydenville, OH on a dreary, overcast day.
