Cette nuit-là, alors qu'un de mes 350D immortalisé le ciel "Au-dessus du Saut de la Mounine", le second APN fut mis au foyer de mon 150 pour une cible plutôt classique dans la constellation de Cassiopée : la nébuleuse par émission Pacman (NGC 281). Pour rendre le champ original, je décidais d'y inclure l'étoile Achird (η Cas – Eta Cassiopée) dans le coin supérieur gauche, ce qui délocalise la nébuleuse vers le coin inférieur droit.
Je suis satisfaite du rendu de cette image… on voit beaucoup de choses dans la nébuleuse, y compris des globules de Bok et des colonnes de gaz qui créeront probablement de nouvelles étoiles dans un avenir proche. De plus, Pacman est entouré de brillantes étoiles rouges, blanches et bleues qui font pétiller l'image. Bref, je suis contente du résultat !

Font d'Urle est un plateau d'alpage du Vercors méridional, dans le territoire de la commune de Bouvante, dans le département de la Drôme.
Les formations géologiques karstiques (lapiaz et scialets), que l'on peut voir durant les autres saisons permettent d'observer les effets parfois spectaculaires de l'érosion.

I had long been keen to visit St Andrew's church at Scole, having first read about it on Simon's Norfolk Churches site some years ago, where I learned of the dramatic impact of its recent history and saw photos of a stunning modern window by Patrick Reyntiens. The church suffered serious damage in an arson attack in 1963, and the subsequent rebuilding gave us the intriguing fusion of ancient and modern that we see today (along with the aforementioned rather fetching glass!). I thus got rather excited when Phil announced at the start of our morning's excursion through south Norfolk that we could aim to finish our itinerary of churches with Scole, time permitting. I do hope my desperate repetitions as the morning wore on of 'Will we still have enough time for Scole?' wasn't too testing for him!
Externally at least this appears to be quite an ordinary Norfolk church of 14th / 15th century date, a fairly plain west tower followed by a nave with an aisle on the south side only and a rather restored looking chancel; this chancel gives the only clue outside to the changes within, with new brickwork suggesting structural intervention in more recent years.
Within the modern restoration is rather more apparent, the 1963 fire had destroyed all the roof and most of the previous furnishings and the restored interior has a much more contemporary feel; all is light and pleasingly simple with white-washed walls and plain wooden ceilings (flat over the nave, pitched over the aisle). The nave is saved from starkness by the rich splash of colour of Patrick Reyntiens's bold semi-abstract window serving as a focal point at the east end, a warm inviting glow that draws the viewer forward. The south aisle clearly suffered less serious damage in the fire given that not only has the richly carved medieval font survived unscathed but also a handsome 1920s window by Edward Woore behind it, two very fortunate survivors of the disaster.
Scole church is refreshingly different, I really liked its synthesis of old and new and the striking glass in particular. It used to have a reputation for being very difficult to visit but happily the mood has changed and the church made open and welcoming on a regular basis in time for our pre-Covid visit.

The Church of St Michael, Kirklington, lies inside the western bend of Whitecross Hill, at the south-west foot of the village. Originally the Church of St Michael the Archangel, the building was an early thirteenth century construction, with frequent additions. It was restored in the nineteenth century. The fabric is rubblestone, with coursed squared stone and ashlar, and Welsh slate roofs. The west tower was built in four stages with offset diagonal buttresses.
The church contains banners and armour of the Wandesford family who still own the Hall. It is a Grade I listed Building.
Kirklington was a large ancient parish, with an area of 4,164 acres (1,685 ha). Until the 19th century it included the townships of Kirklington with Upsland, Howgrave, Sutton Howgrave and East Tanfield, all of which became separate civil parishes in 1866.

This was certainly not the best position to photograph the Fontana Magica, but I was simply surprised by the masses that came to this spectacle. Funny to watch that so many people were focused on their smartphones instead of enjoying the actual fountain. I wonder if we can still experience anything without it????
Building of this church was commenced in 1676. It is dedicated to the King Charles I, executed in 1649.
The white marble font was made in 1906.
Two High is a new font in Swooshable's font directory. Variants have been floating around a long time, but I think the original version can be attributed to William Howard.
You can write with this font using Swooshable's Font Tester. I appreciate any feedback, yay/nay and links, so please let me know if you have any thoughts.

St Mary Magdalene, Beetley, Norfolk
Here we are in what I have come to think of as the black hole of Norfolk, the Gressenhall area, where most of the churches seem to be locked with no keyholder. There can be no excuse for this, of course. Beetley is a large village, and this is not a remote church. The Rector lives immediately to the west of the church - indeed, it is not possible to enter the churchyard without passing the Rectory front door.
As so often with locked churches, there isn't actually a great deal of interest inside other than a pleasing, numinous space with memories of Beetley residents down the long generations. I always feel sorry for communities like Beetley, which I feel are ill-served by their parish churches. A church should be accessible to anyone who needs it, and I am prepared to concede the case for a keyholder notice.
A Catholic Priest I once spoke to in Dereham, a couple of miles off, delighted to visit medieval churches and pray for the reconciliation of Christians in them. He was not from Norfolk, but had a real passion for the county, and loved its medieval churches, most of which are open every day, of course. But he despaired of those in the immediate vicinity. "It is scandalous, I think" he told me. "How could anyone dare to lock the people out of the House of God?"

Nous sommes à la recherche d’une Chevêchette d’Europe, repérée par Daniel quelques jours auparavant.
Nous sommes attentifs, mais aucun bruit ou chant dans les environs, les seuls animaux qui nous font l’honneur de voler autour de nous sont les moustiques !!!
Cela fait au moins un quart d’heure que nous suivons le chemin.
Il nous semble entendre une léger cri diffus, un second, Daniel s’arrête, un troisième cri plus net : je le connais, c’est mon 4ème voyage avec lui, c’est un guide hors du commun, il me murmure : Ural Owl chicks or Great Grey Owl chicks !!
Nous voilà partis dans une forêt jonchée de troncs effondrés partout, souvenir d’un gros coup de vent, nous nous enfonçons dans la mousse, et les moustiques se régalent !
Combien de temps avons-nous marché ? Rien, plus de cris, avons-nous halluciné ? Découragement + moustiques, Daniel me demande : on continue, OK pour 5 mn, putain de moustiques !!!!
Et tout d’un coup, en face de nous une Chouette lapone !!! 20m? 30M ? Elle nous regarde
aussi surprise que nous, il y encore du soleil, 21H13, les appareils crépitent, 150% d’adrénaline, s’en suivra une longue phase d’approche.
A peine le temps de souffler, nous assistons à une scène fugace, le mâle apporte une proie à la femelle, 2 ou 3 secondes ? Le femelle gardera la proie un bon moment.
Daniel est sûr que le ou les petits sont tout proches, il me laisse tout seul avec la mère, plusieurs minutes s’en suivront de pur bonheur. La Chouette disparaîtra, à mon grand désarroi …. pour resurgir une à deux minutes plus tard … sans la proie !
Trop de moustiques, la lumière baisse trop il est presque 23H00.
Il est temps de rentrer, c’est déjà tellement de bonheur, et puis comme un ultime signe, Daniel me montre le petit très curieux de nous, il ne nous quittera pas des yeux, la mère est perchée à quelques mètres, elle sait qu’elle n’a rien à craindre, quelques clics ….
We are searching a Pigmy Owl, seen by Daniel a few days before.
We are careful, but absolutely no noise or Pigmy Owl call, the only animals who honor us in flying are mosquitos !!!
It makes at least 15 mn we follow a trail.
It seems we hear a low cry, a second one, Daniel stops, a third one clearer, I know him, it’s the fourth trip with him, it’s a phenomenal guide, he murmurs : Ural Owl chicks or Great Grey Owl chicks !!
And we start a walk in a forest strewn by dead trees, big storm rest, we sink into moss, and mosquitos are eating !!
How long time do we walk ? Nothing, no more calls, do we have hallucinated ?
Discouragement + mosquitoes, Daniel ask me : do we continue, OK for 5 mn? Fucking mosquitoes !!!
All of sudden, in front of us a Great Grey Owl !!! 20 m, 30 m ? She is watching us as surprised we are, there is still sun, 9:13 PM, cameras are crackling, 150 % adrenaline, then a long approach phase.
Just a short time to breath, we are witnessing a fleeting scene, the male brings a prey to the female, 2 or 3 seconds ? The female will keep the prey for a long time.
Daniel is sure chicks are very close, he let me alone with the female? several minutes of pure happiness. The owl will disappear, to my great dismay … to suddenly come back one or two minutes later … without prey !
Too many mosquitoes, light is becoming too low, it’s close from 11PM.
It’s time to come back, it’s already so much happiness, and as the last sign, Daniel shows me the chick very curious about us, he will not leave us eyes, mother is perched a few meters close, she knows she has nothing to fear, last clics …..
