I had been watching some ravens play on the updrafts and steady winds while I was shooting the clouds yesterday. one of them ventured within reach of my 24-70 and for the briefest of moments it soared against the boiling clouds.

I hope you enjoyed the images and thank you for visiting.
I spent last week at the Arches National Park, Utah. It was over 100 degrees while I was there. Few days later, I cool off at Las Vegas in a fancy hotel pool. :)
Anyways, we are so insignificant when we stand next to mother nature. Utah Arches and landscape are amazing.
What fascinates me the most when I visit places like this, it is the history of the people who came to discover and lived there. I just can't image how difficult it was without roads, running water, etc.,
Enjoy the rest of your day and be blessed with what you have.
800mm, prefect light.........Lucky me! Sandhill Crane on final approach. Basque del Apache at it's best.
Tree Swallows, Bosque Del Apache. I knew My ISO was to high for the combination of factors one has to consider when shooting small fast birds but the beauty of the scene overruled all technical factors and I shot away hoping for one or two decent images anyway.
Sunday brought more overcast skies and a stiff wind from the North I spent the morning watching for the most part, trying to get comfortable with my 28-300 on a mono pod and finding it a bit unruly in the wind. Of the shots it took this is among the sharpest. Note to self Mono pod and heavy lens in high wind..........................not good.
Part of my Bosque del Apache adventure this past weekend included some time at the Lad S Gordon refuge, it's part of the Bosque del Apache network and reminds me of how BDA used to be back in the late 1970's. another part of this trip was an 800mm lens that I rented as I continue my search for a long prime lens. This is among the first 50 or so images I made with the Canon EF800mm f5.6 IS USM mounted on my 7D Mk II on a very stormy morning. Tripod and gimbal head are a must with this beast, lens and camera tip the scales at about 12lbs.
The week has been a blur so I thought I post one from last weekend. A pair of Northern Shoveler's streaking through the steely light of the morning.
This year has flown by. Lots of change, much of it for the worse and nearly as much for the good. Flickr would do well to undo most of it's changes. In short it was a tremendously well thought out platform with a few minor bugs that would have been even better with the bugs fixed. Instead some well intentioned lame brains have sought to reinvent the parts that worked well and ignore the minor issues they should have sought to improve. Yes I've considered leaving and am still looking for something close to what this was. Not wishing to end the year on a bitter note and needing to have that off my chest I'll move on to happier thoughts and start a new year with a new set of goals, hopes, and dreams. Heres to clouds and PS and LR, to new camera goodies and the perfect shot..........here's to catching the front of the bird more than the aft. Here's to all of you especially those who laughed.
I appreciate the cover and your support of my photos!

Fly With Me, to mark the one year since the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban. Flying kites, music, dance. Organised by the Good Chance Theatre at Parliament Hill Viewpoint on Hampstead Heath.
12 months on from the Taliban offensive and the UK government’s response to the crisis has drastically changed; the Home Office has slashed the number of Afghan refugees allowed into the UK, the Afghan Resettlement Scheme has stalled, and over 12,000 of the Afghan refugees evacuated last August remain housed in unsuitable temporary accommodation, unable to cook for themselves or connect with people in the local community.

Learning about workflow and noise reduction while trying to catch up here. Needless to say I'm woefully behind. I took a friend to BDA to do some photography and see all the birds. It was very windy and aside from a slot in the Eastern horizon the sky was overcast. Aside from a predawn gathering of snow geese in the big pond the birds in general stayed to ground all morning, and for the first time in years for me we weren't treated to a mass ascension.

I went for a hike along the Rio Grande this morning on the return leg I spotted a handful of Canada geese. As luck would have it they took flight and I was treated to great fall scene!
I'm never sure about these, which reads I'm always amazed when someone beside's myself likes shots like this. BDA pre dawn geese landing in the flock on the big pond.
This is another of those images that was previously to noisy for me to post. It was a different sort of morning the day this was taken. Perhaps it was because it was so warm I really don't know but the snow geese never took flight in mass. There were several large ascensions and we were treated to a massive and prolonged fly in as the geese gathered in the pre dawn light. While it was still to dark for great photography they flew above us swirling, circling in waves never really settling in one area but rather in several places in several large flocks. It was something I haven't seen before in a place I've seen many times and is always fascinating to visit.

11/29/2013 Sunset at Bosque Del Apache. The light was nearly gone and the reflection on the water was turning from gold to indigo. High winds had been stratifying the clouds and making great patterns in the sky. Cranes drifting in on the last rays of sun made my last few frames everything I could have hoped for. I packed up and went to the Buckhorn for a burger and a beer, satisfied and ready for the morning.
The Rush
Ducks spooked from their roosts in the marsh by a bald eagle. The commotion was quite a spectacle!
