This is the little beastie that produces Goldenrod galls — The Goldenrod Gall Fly (Eurosta solidaginis). This fly is native to North America, and is only alive for two weeks, when they mate, and then lay the next season's eggs in mid-spring, on the stems of Goldenrod plants. Eggs hatch in 7 days and the larvae starts eating. The larvae are the source of the galls that become their food source and host plant over the winter. The larvae climb up the stalk to below the plants buds and introduces a chemical that starts the gall growing. They then bore into the gall and create a chamber to live in over the long winter. Early spring songbirds are well aware of this behaviour, and search out the galls for easy meals. So when you find a gall that has been pecked into, you know that a bird has feasted on some good nutritious Gall fly larvae. A 5-image, handheld stack.

Another for flighty Flyday! Very common in farming areas. Adults are mainly carnivorous, catching smaller insects, but they also eat nectar. As their name suggests, they lays their eggs mainly on cowpatties. Five image handheld stack.

What is Flyday without a fly? Just boring old Friday I suppose!

Syrphid Flies are beneficial pollinators, often confused with bees and hornets. These beauties are completely harmless, and, if you look closely, their large round eyes and short antennae are quick indications that these are neither bees nor hornets, Also, unlike their look-a-likes, can hover whenever they feel inclined. They pollinate and lay eggs on our flowering plants, when their larvae hatch, they are voratious consumers of aphids. Let's hear it for our Syrphid buddies!

HFDF to all.

Once again it's Flyday, so here's yet another fly. I believe this is Coenosia tigrina, a predatory fly, that feeds on earthworms in it's larval stages. Other names include "Hunter flies" or "Killer flies", they are commonly found in greenhouses, though this "hunter" was in my garden... probably hunting my earthworms! The nerve!

Forgot to mention, this is a four image handheld stack.

The same ‘Comb-footed Spider’, aka Candy Stripe Spider as previous. They can vary in colour, and are usually found among flower heads or leaves, where they spin small webs to catch prey, such as this fly. Four-image handheld stack.

Unlike other flies, Flesh flies (Sarcophaga) lay live (yuck) maggots....yuck, not eggs, on carcasses, wounds, dung, etc. The presence of adults and larvae at a crime scene, can be a good indicator in determining how long a body has been laying there. Fun stuff, right. Join us again tomorrow for more exciting breakfast time reading.

If it were not for the water drops and the cool morning temps, this one would probably have been up to it's usual pest self. A 5-image handheld image stack.

Hey, it's Flyday once again, so I thought I'd give you this one, This fly is hosting two sizable mites and was clearly not in good shape, trying it's best to shake off the unwanted guests.

Flyday again! Have a great day and weekend you wonderful folks out there.

In the early hours, before the sun is up, insects like this Common green bottle fly have to wait for the water to evaporate, before they get about their pesty business. They also use the water drops as a source of hydration.

Well it's rolled around once again, so here's my submission for — Flyday Friday.

Hey it's happy Flyday again!

I believe this is a Red-eyed fly (Coenosia ?? ), but not 100% sure and open to correction. If it is, they are killer flies that prey on other insects. Pentax ist-DS2, Tamron 90 mm Macro Æ’2.8 Adaptall Lens.

Ya'll know it's Flyday! How could I not post one? This is a female Dance fly, differentiated from the male by the dark band between the eyes. The name Dance fly comes from their erratic movements while in flight. Their courtship involves the male presenting a dead fly to the female, and mating does not take place until the female accepts and eats it. Usually found in moist areas, they feed on smaller insects. They are also referred to as Dagger flies, because of that sharp piercing mouthpart, seen here below it's bright red eyes. 2-image handheld stack.
