A quiet couple of weeks following a surprise trip to hospital to get my appendix whipped out! I'm now enjoying catching up on everyone's Flickr activity though :)

Picked this flower portrait up during a half-hour wandering round our garden trying/failing to catch decent macros of bees, hoverflies and other insects.

Processed using the Lightroom 'creative - split tone 4' preset which seemed to boost the impact of the orginal shot.

I took these flowers at the Hitachino Mizube Park in Tsukuba on March 18, 2018. This year the cherry trees are blooming early.

And my first time shooting RAW. Unfortunately, I don't have a macro lens yet, so I did my best with my 50mm 1.8.

Plants prefer a warm and sunny position and rich soil, although they tolerate poor soil, salt or drought well. Modern cultivars flower continuously when watered and fertilised well, and dead-heading is not necessary, because they do not set seed easily. If planted in a container, soil should be prevented from drying out completely. If they do, the plants will go into "sleep mode" and survive the period of drought, but they will abort their flower buds and not easily come back into flower. Moreover, roots are relatively susceptible to rotting if watered too profusely after the dry period.

Magnolias are my home state's flower/tree and I love seeing them where I live in Virginia. I love how big and beautiful the blossoms are and while I like the shot I took, I found when I cropped it, the carpels (the curly bits--I had to google it :-) were much more interesting. I wasn't using a tripod (but the light was quite good), so I was pretty pleased with how sharp it turned out.

Another practice shots with my newly acquired Nikon 105/f 2.8 macro lens. This time I aimed it at the ultimate private parts, i.e. the inner sanctum, of a begonia flower, its stigma.
