My son and I went to fly at Seal Beach as members of a kite club were supposed to be there. Sadly, only one member showed up but he did have some great (and big) kites. These are 125 sq. ft. Flow Forms. As the wind was quite brisk, he was using 750 # test string to fly them.

Photo taken from a kite (self made 1metre Flowform). Most of the photos like this one missed he intended target, the "double gibbet". I nearly got the kite line caught round it and hung myself!

Combe Gibbet is situated to the west of Newbury in Berkshire, near the villages of Kintbury and Inkpen. Close to the villages can be found a pleasant country road which can be used to climb to the top of the Downs and the Gibbet. The views from the Gibbet are spectacular and the scenery is fantastic for miles around.

As well as the Gibbet there are the remains of the Iron Age (600 BC to 50 AD) Walbury hill fort. This stands at 974 feet (279m) above sea level, and was a considerable feat of construction in its day.

Combe gibbet stands on the top of Gallows Down, and was erected on top of a Neolithic burial mound. It was only ever use once in 1676. George Broomham of Combe, and Dorothy Newman two Inkpen lovers were hung on the Gibbet for public viewing following their trial and hanging in Winchester. They were found guilty of the brutal murders of Martha and Robert Broomham, George's wife and son. They would have got away with it, but unfortunately for them the barefoot village idiot 'Mad Thomas' watched them committing the crime and managed to convey what he had seen to the authorities.

Their dead bodies were hung on either side of the Combe Gibbet to act as reminder to any other would be wrong doers of the consequences. The original gibbet perished many years ago and there been several replacements over the years, due to vandalism and lightening.
