This is a project going on in central Washington studying flammulated owls (FLOW). We were capturing the owls and attaching bands and geolocators to study their migration.

The prolific use of barrage balloons to protect the anchorage and shore facilities around Scapa Flow necessitated the installation of a hydrogen gas plant to ensure sufficient and ready supply of the lighter-than-air gas. Rinnigill was chosen, and a gas plant along with deep water jetty were constructed. The site overlooked the dockyard at Lyness where many of the engineering tasks associated with the defence of Scapa Flow took place.
The gas was produced by adding water to solid sodium hydroxide and ferrosilicon (an alloy of silicon and iron) in a pressure vessel. The exothermic reaction needed to be cooled using water, and produced waste products such as iron slag. This method was chosen over the more traditional electrolysis due to the large amount of electricity that would have been required. it did, however, mean that the production of hydrogen was in batches as opposed to the continuous process of electrolysis.
Most of the brick built buildings of the gas plant remain, as do footprints for tanks that would likely have contained the hydrogen and water for cooling the pressure vessels. It's also possible that some of the steel panels that made up the tanks of this process are still on the site, seemingly awaiting disposal.
