Earthen embankment separating the foreground-canal from the floodplain in the background. At one stage, this floodplain was part of an immense lagoon, called Songkhla Lake. Over the years, human-interference through land development, i.e. building and backfilling, caused sediment to build up and shrink the inland sea to its present area: 1,040 km2. To put that into perspective, Singapore is 733.1 km2. (Areas from Wikipedia).

In its lower reaches The Geitá (Goat river) is a braided stream typical of of many glacial runoff rivers. The floodplain is strewn with pebbles and boulders from high water events. The mountains in the distance are made up of altered volcanic rocks. The high point at 437 meters (1434 feet) above sea level is called Hatunga. I photographed this view east of Húsafell, Iceland as we returned from Langjökull (glacier) in the Highlands.

A pretty sunset near my home when two weeks ago the water level of the rivers filled all the floodplains.

A clear layer of mist below the mountains. At just above sea level, this floodplain remains cool for an hour longer than everywhere else - on a still day anyway.

Previously the “Lippe” was straightened in this area, but then the river was renatured, the natural course was restored, so that the “Lippe” now can overflow the floodplains several times a year.

This bridge crosses the Ohio River at the floodplain near Hardintown, Indiana and travels up a rural hillside near Petersburg, Kentucky. Opened in 1977, the hill presents a challenge during many winter days. Image captured across Juno Pond at Oxbow Conservancy.

This is a view looking south from the rim of stream eroded ampitheater visible from the Gooseberry Badlands overlook near Gooseberry Creek, Wyoming. This overlook lies along WY 431 and provides a glimpse of the badlands formations common in Early Eocene Willwood formation of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. The Willwood, famous for its mammalian fossils, consists of a series of cyclic fluvial (stream/river) and floodplain deposits. In the badlands visible from the overlook, ribbon-like thin channel sands thought to be avulsion channels or splays can be seen alternating with red paleosol and drab floodplain deposits. There are some thicker fluvial sands that represent the trunk or main stream channels. Intermittent, ephemeral streams have eroded these sediments into fanciful hoodoos, pillars; castles; small arches and fluted walls often capped by one of the ribbon or thicker fluvial sands A 1.5 mile nature trails winds into the badlands formations from the overlook giving hikers a glimpse into the rugged terrain that covers much of the central Bighorn Basin.

The city never recovered from the Great Flood of 1997 that killed 5 people and left over 1,000 homeless. This area was designated as being in a flood plain. This designation limits insurance coverage and the possibility of getting bank loans.

The water levels keep rising, but in contrast to other parts of the country it's not that much out of the ordinary yet.

In the Lahn floodplains

A species of lowland river floodplains that usually inhabits slow-flowing, meandering rivers and large dykes. Occasionally occurs in mature gravel pits and nearby ponds also support populations. Inhabited sites characteristically have good water quality, which supports submerged and floating plants as well as prolific stands of emergent vegetation. Ovipositing females require areas of slow flowing open water, and the adults require some shrub or tree shelter.

The floodplain of the Nederrijn is graced by lots of natural wonders such as the great Noordberg, a moraine about 30 metres high along the length of the river for five kilometer or so. On it once stood the gallows of the lords of Doorwerth so that the to be executed might through their noose see for the last time the eternal rush of the riverine waters into oblivion in the North Sea. Today the area is a nature reserve with a beautiful forest and pastures.

Of course there are some farms here, but the 'human' structure that really stands out is Doorwerth Castle. It's difficult to say that it dates from the thirteenth century because it has since then many times been (almost entirely) destroyed. But today it's been beautifully restored.

There's not really much of more than parochial interest in the exhibitions. But enter the courtyard: Nature rears its green head. You can just see on the right the top of a Robinia pseudoaccacia. It is said to date from 1678, although tree surgeons down through the ages have had to give it some help in surviving.

The March-Thaya floodplains are among the most important breeding grounds for white storks in Central Europe. Up to 180 couples come here every April to raise their young. On some old oaks there are up to seven clumps, one of which can weigh up to 800 kilograms. At the end of August, the storks return to southern Africa, where they spend the winter before returning to the Marchfeld in spring.

Stork house MarcheggAs an information and visitor center for nature tourism in the March-Thaya floodplain, the stork house is the ideal starting point for an eventful day with the Marchegger storks. During a visit you will get to know the habitat, the nest building and the young birds of the storks. You can even take a look into a real stork's nest via live cam and watch the animals incubate and rear the young. In the integrated shop you also have the opportunity to buy regional delicacies and souvenirs. Guided tours to the stork colony Be sure to take part in a guided tour and walk through the WWF floodplain reserve right behind Marchegg Castle with trained eco-educators. During the approximately one-hour hike, you will learn exciting details about Master Adebar and the life of the storks in the Au and can observe the everyday life of the animals. Tip: If you haven't had enough of the unique birds after the tour, we recommend visiting the viewing platform on the castle meadow. From here you can see the storks from afar.

Topis (Damaliscus korrigum) are a highly social and fast antelope species of the genus Damaliscus. The vernacular name "topi" applies not only to the species but also to two subspecies D. k. jimela and D. k. topi, while the name korrigum or tiang applies to the subspecies D. k. korrigum. Along with the Bangweulu Tsessebe this species was formerly included in the common tsessebe.

The species is to be found in the savannas, semi-deserts, and floodplains of sub-Saharan Africa.

The topi has a long but patchy distribution as it prefers certain grasslands in arid and savanna biomes. Human hunting and habitat destruction have further isolated their population.

The following countries have been found to contain topi: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, and Uganda. The species is regionally extinct in Burundi, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, and Senegal.- Wikipedia
