The flooded landscape of the playa near Manly Lake, Death Valley.
This is another in a series of photographs of the floor of Death Valley near Badwater, photographed from high in the Black Mountains early one morning. Following a historic storm in August of 2023, this part of the valley flooded, partially reconstituting the historic Lake Manly. There is still a lot of water, and many areas of the playa are currently inaccessible.
To make these photographs I used very long focal length lenses, which allowed me to isolate small areas in this vast terrain. The formations seen here are in a very flat area just upstream of Lake Manly. The area is mostly a salt flat in normal times. Here the blue water makes visible the many wandering channels through which the water flows.

By May 1927, the Mississippi River below Memphis, Tennessee, reached a width of 60 miles (97 km) and submerged an area of the Mississippi Delta nearly the size of New England. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in the history of the United States, with 27,000 square miles inundated up to a depth of 30 feet. To prevent future floods, the government built the world's longest system of levees and floodways. Many African-Americans displaced from their homes along the Lower Mississippi River started a large migration North to the industrial cities

Karst fields of Inner Carniolia can be dangerous in periods of long rain. Otherwise all water quickly goes underground but those "reservoirs" can also get full and big areas are flooded. This valley is not far away from Cerkniško jezero, the biggest intermittent lake of Europe.
The Mississippi river has flooded the lagoon below the spillway in Onalaska for several days now. Just when the river levels were starting to come down, we're getting an April blizzard that's sure to prolong the flooding!

That was in June 2016. Locals were telling us that summer floods were annual. Usually they has them in January. Since 2016 floods are common in Venice year around. Some tourists were wearing flood boot, quite expensive (15 euros at that time, maybe even more in 2020).

Back in 2008, a large water main blew out in the city of Livonia, MI. The water cascaded down an embankment to a freeway. The freeway had a slight dip at that point and water began to flood the road. Traffic stopped, but as usual some knuckleheads decided to drive through anyway. A half dozen cars were stranded. Even though the water was about 3 feet deep and there was no current, drivers and passengers stayed with their vehicles until rescued by the local fire department. I spoke with this gentleman post-rescue. He told me that just prior to rescue he had called his insurance agent, who immediately declared the Volvo a total loss.
