Karatsu Kunchi is my favorite festival in Japan I think. It happens in the modest town of Karatsu in the smallest prefecture of Saga. For several days around Nov. 3-5 (not sure of exact dates), the people of Karatsu get out very old floats that were made by different neighborhoods in the 1800's. People from those neighborhoods then pull these extremely heavy, beautiful, works of art through the city while playing flutes, drums, chanting, drinking sake, and event throwing salt (which considered a ritual purifier in Japan.)
This festival has been designated important intangible cultural property by Japan. After the hundreds and hundreds of people (including children) are done parading through the streets, people in the city open their homes to strangers and invite people in for food and drink. It's a rare and beautiful thing.
The large ornate floats, or yatai, date back to the 17th century, and are decorated with intricate carvings of gilded wood and detailed metal-work. Detailed carving, lacquering and beautiful decorative metal-works is found not only on the outside of the floats, but inside as well, under the roof and behind the panels, where the work is amazingly detailed. The floats are also gorgeously decorated with embroidered drapery.

The evening of the Thai Poosam is the famous float in the Tank of the Mylapore Kaapaleeswarar temple. The float and the Mandapam in the tank is richly decorated with lights which make a exciting sight to watch. The reflections on the water is an added treat, with the tank being full of water now a days !!
Darek & I got on a Silver Lining Tour bus at 4:30 a.m. and headed to Pasadena, California for the 129th Tournament of Roses Parade. The theme this year was "Making A Difference". The Grand Marshall was Gary Sinise. We saw Todrick Hall on a float! We had a wonderful time. After the parade we drove down Colorado Boulevard (the parade road) and saw all the trash people had left...How disgusting. The tour included our bus rides, bleacher seats for the parade and dinner at Home Town Buffet.

I think I read somewhere that there are more small planes in Alaska than cars. Well I can say these float planes were landing and taking off every couple of minutes. I think most of them were carrying tourists for a little sightseeing.
