Don't be alarmed. Although these nets were unattended, they looked like they were used regularly and not abandoned on the beach.

Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) People, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
Bear Grass, Cedar Bark, Dye, Glass Float Probably From Japan, 1910
Japanese glass fishing floats were used by fishermen to suspend nets and were known to wash up on the shores of the Northwest Coast. A talented Nuu-chah-nulth weaver covered this float with finely woven basketry, depicting major symbols of Nootka culture. Large basketry floats, such as this one, are very rare.

I went to a float spa in Coquitlam. You lie in the tank, close the lid, shut off the light, and you've got yourself 75 minutes of sensory deprivation.

I always loved sensory-deprivation imagery of Ken Russell's Altered States and experienced my own 'positive' states of 'other consciousness' in my own Apollo Float Tank used by Victoria University of Technology and The Australian Institute of Sport. In my original inspiration from Duran Duran's The Man Who Stole A Leopard, the hunter sees the extraordinary metamorphosis as the creature sleeps. In my new version, Do You Know Where We Are, I imagined that metamorphosis in my tank and bursting out of that deep relaxation state....
The shadows the were cast by the trees and the early sun really did wonders on the japanese garden and the glass floats that could be found there. Enjoy!
About the series
This series of shots were taken on 10-22-2010 at Cheekwood Botanical Garden. Dale Chihuly, world renowned glass artist, was having a garden exhibition where he installs pieces into the gardens to enhance the appeal of both the gardens and his work. This is the fifth Chihuly exhibition that I've gone to and the fourth that I've been able to shoot. I really enjoy the mixture of the glass and the gardens, and it makes for great photo opportunities.
"I love to juxtapose the manmade and the natural to sort of make people wonder, is it manmade or did it come from nature? That's a very important part of my work."
