after finding out quickly I had single shot set and not getting focus...It's almost like I have to learn this all over again,

Getting Swallows in flight is a challenge for me. I shoot in their general direction taking aim as best I can, hoping for the best. Sometimes my hopes are realized!!!

This is not a good shot by any means but I thought a funny one. My grandkids were visiting and we took them to the Quinte International Air Show. A seagull and a USAF F16 seem to merge into one in this demonstration of flight.
A ‘Picture Jasper’ valley sharing an ancient autumn morning with birds in flight. The birds I found stenciled to the flood wall in Dubuque and the next morning I found the piece of Jasper at the big Flea Market at What Cheer - a chance meeting for making an imaginary prehistoric image.
These gulls were caught flying around at Newton Lake with the golden leaves of autumn reflecting on the water. My Gull identification skills are not good but I thing the top one is a Lesser Black-Backed Gull - Larus fuscus - and the lower gull is a Black-Headed Gull - Larus ridibundus - in winter plumage. Two Coots - Fulica atra - can be seen swimming, out of focus, in the background.

I used a (gulp) ISO 12,800 to take some photos of birds in flight while it was snowing. I tried to get rid of the noise and sharpen it a bit by using my new ON1 software. I think it came out looking more like a painting!
This is a female Anna's hummingbird, looking nice and green and maybe even a little plump. I've seen a big increase in hummingbird activity lately. I got chewed out by both males and females today as I checked feeder levels and refilled them. I mean, they got right up in my face, just a few inches from me and chattered at me with aggression. Strongly-worded letter to follow.
Gulls or seagulls are seabirds of the family Laridae in the sub-order Lari. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Until the twenty-first century most gulls were placed in the genus Larus, but this arrangement is now known to be polyphyletic, leading to the resurrection of several genera. An older name for gulls is mew, cognate with German "Möwe" and Dutch "meeuw"; this term can still be found in certain regional dialects.

I had been photographing this young bull moose (alces alces) while it was feeding in the shallows and I inadvertently knocked an oar against the side of my small fishing boat. This year I might drive to different directions to find a good location for bird photography. It is important to have all the equipment before going to shoot. I need to be patient in order to have good bird pictures. Capturing birds in flight is not easy especially with longer lenses, so it needs some practice. Make sure bird in flight should be in focus from the first image. This year I will drive far away and find different birds in flight rather than just the seagulls. I prefer cloudy days because I don’t like harsh light on birds. I always delete blurry images. Zoom in to see the details on the birds’ feathers. Have a wonderful weekend!
