***************************

As I've noted in other sets of photos here on Flickr, I've been lucky enough to visit Rome dozens of times since I first celebrated a solitary birthday there back in 1972. Since then, I've often come alone (usually on business trips to lecture about various aspects of software development), and I've sometimes managed to bring various children and/or my wife. This time, like many other trips, I was alone.

On most of my trips, I make a point of visiting Piazza del Popolo at least once -- because there are always interesting scenes to photograph, with a combination of tourists, students, lovers, and amateur musicians. This time, there was a Michael Jackson impersonator -- who, at least from a distance, seemed to mimic MJ's fluid moves pretty well. And there was an electric guitarist, but it turned out that he could only play instrumentals -- and he tended to play the same songs, over and over again.

I photographed people in Piazza del Popolo on the first and last days of my visit; but I also spent a couple hours in Piazza Santa Margarita in Trastevere, where there was a wedding underway. And I strolled a block or two from my hotel to Piazza Cavour, where the entire piazza had been off-limits for years because of reconstruction work. But the reconstruction is over, the piazza is open, and I was lucky enough to be there during the "golden hour" before sunset, where I got some interesting photos of the local people enjoying a balmy early-summer evening.

On Sunday morning, I decided to visit the enormous "flea market" at Porta Portensa, where I did my best to get a few interesting shots of the shoppers, tourists, and long rows of merchant stalls filled with various forms of cheap, tacky merchandise. It was quite an experience...

As I have on past occasions, I took thousands of photos during my week-long visit, from which I select a few dozen to upload to Flickr. Hopefully they'll give you a sense of what it's like here in the Eternal City ...

Just a little something I threw together using letters from my own collection. Too bad I don't have a pink, lowercase R on hand at the moment.

Carambola, or star fruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola, a species of tree native to Indonesia, the Philippines, and throughout Malesia.[1] The fruit is commonly consumed throughout Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, Micronesia, and parts of East Asia. The tree is cultivated throughout tropical areas.

The fruit has distinctive ridges running down its sides (usually five but can occasionally vary); when cut in cross-section, it resembles a star, hence its name.[1] The entire fruit is edible and is usually eaten out of hand. They may also be used in cooking and can be made into relishes, preserves, and juice drinks.

The original range of Averrhoa carambola is believed to be from Sri Lanka or Indonesia,[1] but has been cultivated in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia for hundreds of years. They remain a local favorite in those areas but have also recently gained popularity in parts of East Asiaand Queensland, Australia; as well as in the Pacific Islands, particularly Tahiti, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and Guam. They are cultivated commercially in India, Southeast Asia, southern China, Taiwan, and the southern United States. They are also grown in Central America, Brazil, the Southwestern United States and Florida, and parts of Africa.[1][2] In other areas they are usually grown as ornamentals, rather than for consumption.[2]

The fruit is about 5 to 15 centimetres (2 to 6 inches) in length and is an oval shape. It usually has five prominent longitudinal ridges, but in rare instances it can have as few as four or as many as eight. In cross section, it resembles a star.[1] The skin is thin, smooth, and waxy and turns a light to dark yellow when ripe. The flesh is translucent and light yellow to yellow in color. Each fruit can have 10 to 12 flat light brown seeds about 6 to 13 mm (0.25 to 0.5 in) in width and enclosed in gelatinous aril. Once removed from the fruit, they lose viability within a few days.[3][4][5]

Like the closely related bilimbi, there are two main types of carambola: the small sour (or tart) type and the larger sweet type. The sour varieties have a higher oxalic acid content than the sweet type. A number of cultivars have been developed in recent years. The most common cultivars grown commercially include the sweet types "Arkin" (Florida), "Dah Pon" (Taiwan), "Ma fueng" (Thailand), "Maha" (Malaysia), and "Demak" (Indonesia) and the sour types "Golden Star", "Newcomb", "Star King", and "Thayer" (all from Florida). Some of the sour varieties like "Golden Star" can become sweet if allowed to ripen.[2][3][4]

including the slightly waxy skin. The flesh is crunchy, firm, and extremely juicy.[1] It does not contain fibers and has a texture similar in consistency to that of grapes. Carambolas are best consumed shortly after they ripen, when they are yellow with a light shade of green or just after all traces of green have disappeared. They will also have brown ridges at the edges and feel firm. Fruits picked while still slightly green will turn yellow in storage at room temperature, but will not increase in sugar content. Overripe carambola will be yellow with brown spots and can become blander in taste and soggier in consistency.[4][6]

Ripe sweet type carambolas are sweet without being overwhelming as they rarely have more than 4% sugar content. They have a tart, sour undertone, and an oxalic acid odor. The taste is difficult to match, but it has been compared to a mix of apple, pear, grape, and citrus family fruits. Unripe star fruits are firmer and sour, and taste like green apples.[3][7]

Ripe carambolas may also be used in cooking. In Southeast Asia, they are usually stewed in cloves and sugar, sometimes with apples. In China, they are cooked with fish. In Australia, they may be cooked as a vegetable, pickled, or made into jams. In Jamaica they are sometimes dried.[2]

Unripe and sour type carambolas can be mixed with other chopped spices to make relishes in Australia.[2] In the Philippines, unripe carambolas are eaten dipped in rock salt.[8] In Thailand, they are cooked together with shrimp.[2]

The juice from carambolas is also used in iced drinks, particularly the juice of the sour varieties. In the Philippines they can be used as seasoning. In India, the juice is bottled for drinking.[2]

Carambolas contain caramboxin[9] and oxalic acid.[10] Both substances are harmful to individuals suffering from kidney failure, kidney stones, or those under kidney dialysistreatment.[10] Consumption by those with kidney failure can produce hiccups, vomiting, nausea, mental confusion, and sometimes death.[11][12][13] Caramboxin is a neurotoxin which is structurally similar to phenylalanine, and is a glutamatergic agonist.[9]

Drug interactions

Edit

Like the grapefruit, carambola is considered to be a potent inhibitor of seven cytochrome P450 isoforms.[14][15] These enzymes are significant in the first-pass elimination of many medications, and, thus, the consumption of carambola or its juice in combination with certain prescription medications can significantly increase their effective dosage within the body.

The carambola is a tropical and subtropical fruit which can be grown at elevations up to 1,200 metres (4,000 feet). It prefers full sun exposure, but requires enough humidity and annual rainfall of at least 1,800 mm (70 in). It does not have a soil type preference, but requires good drainage.[citation needed]

Carambola trees are planted at least 6 m (20 ft) from each other and typically are fertilized three times a year. The tree grows rapidly and typically produces fruit at four or five years of age. The large amount of rain during spring actually reduces the amount of fruit, but, in ideal conditions, carambola can produce from 90 to 180 kilograms (200 to 400 pounds) of fruit a year. The carambola tree flowers throughout the year, with main fruiting seasons from April to June and October to December in Malaysia,[16]for example, but fruiting also occurs at other times in some other locales, such as South Florida.[4]

Growth and leaf responses of container-grown `Arkin' carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.) trees to long-term exposure of 25%, 50%, or 100% sunlight showed that shading increased rachis length and leaflet area, decreased leaflet thickness, and produced more horizontal branch orientation.[17]

Major pests are fruit flies, fruit moths, ants, and birds.[3][16] Crops are also susceptible to frost.[3]

Top producers of carambola in the world market include Australia, Guyana, India, Israel, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and the United States.[4] Malaysia is a global leader in star fruit production by volume and ships the product widely to Asia and Europe.[16] Due to concerns over pests and pathogens, however, whole star fruits cannot yet be imported to the US from Malaysia under current United States Department of Agriculture regulations. In the United States, carambolas are grown in tropical and semitropical areas, including Texas, South Carolina, Louisiana, California, Virginia, Florida and Hawaii.[2][18]

In the United States, commercial cultivation and broad consumer acceptance of the fruit only dates to the 1970s, attributable to Morris Arkin, a backyard horticulturalist, in Coral Gables, Florida. The 'Arkin' variety represented 98% of the acreage in South Florida in the early 21st century.[19]

The trees are also grown as ornamentals for their abundant brightly colored and unusually shaped fruits, as well as for their attractive dark green leaves and their lavender to pink flowers.[4]

Like the bilimbi, the juice of the more acidic sour types can be used to clean rusty or tarnished metal (especially brass) as well as bleach rust stains from cloth. They may also be used as a mordant in dyeing.[2]

Etymology and vernacular names

Edit

The Portuguese word carambola, first known use 1598, was taken from Marathi karambalderived from Sanskrit karmaphala.[20] In Spanish, it is known as carambola. The carambola is called "star fruit" in English.

PRO84 Elliott Erwitt - Emulation Assignment October 09

Mission:

To emulate the style of Elliott Erwitt, Born Paris 1928.

This will become clearer as you read further and as you study his work. However, at this moment, your task is to find a human, tender, amusing or downright funny moment involving people or animals and to depict it in a way that we are seeing the moment - not the decisive moment - just the snapshot moment where two things came together and the result was the unexpected - a tender human moment - or funny, but always real life and making us appreciate the 'sense of the ridiculous' all around us.

He uses juxtaposition of elements not meant to be together, but when they are, we smile.

Of course his work was not always to make us smile or laugh, but I do feel that this is his most self-effacing asset. Through his work, we are part of the end product and can share the 'indecisive moment' (as he himself puts it) with him. Elliott Erwitt was not above engineering those moments – in fact, he used to carry a noisy horn to spook dogs into jumping at the moment he took the photo.

But he also saw the potential in many situations. This is where your imagination comes into play. Do you see a Billboard which would be hilarious with (say) horses underneath it? Or even the child carrying a balloon, which looks like a substitute head at different angles? Or like one of Elliott Erwitt’s classics, the woman sitting with a dog on her lap – and it is the dog we see for the top half of her body.

WIT: I took my daughter and niece to the park to play so I could look for EE situations. I had no luck so I decided to use the kids for props. We walked along a trail and I had the girls act out every sign we came to. This was one of their best interpretations. For post processing I cropped the shot square and created two b&w versions (one to work on the sky and trees, and another for the sign and girls) and overlayed them with some layer masking.

I really like Erwitt's sense of irony and humor, it fits me well. Although there were no particular EE photos that I used for inspiration, I am hoping my submission has his sense of juxtaposition and humor. It was very frustrating not to be able to find other/better examples around town. I think this is one of those things where if you look too hard you wont be able to find it. Just let it happen and hope you have your camera with you.

My brother and I had a design studio in the past, and I did all of the Celtics promotional work for several years through our client SportsChannel of New England. Paul Freehauf (Eagle Rock Entertainment) was the Creative Director there and we did all the design and production. I also designed the Boston Celtics' Sixth Player trophy that was sponsored through Texaco. It was retired after Reggie Lewis was awarded it. There is more info in the first comment too if you like. My gwennie2006 account is not pro right now, but everything is still here through site searches (described below). My GrfxDziner account is pro and has full size images. Here is a link to that account at flickr...

I also did many of the commercials for MVP sports at the time. The Johnny Most announcement in that Top 10 qwikLoadr link was used on one in particular. The Bird's Back poster in the first comment was created when Larry Bird came back early from injury, and given out at the game. The World Championship poster from 1986 was also given out at the first Boston Garden game of the 1986-1987 season. SportsChannel had no budget for the poster, so the folks who worked on it received credit on the poster, as well as 150 limited prints. The plates were destroyed once the printing was complete. Mark Burton of Boston, Massachusetts was the official printer, and that is their logo bottom left on the poster.

Oi =3

ACORDA BRASIL !!! A GENTE QUER HOLOGRAFICOS !!!

GRITEM

PEÇAM

ESCREVAM

CHOREM

HUAuhAHUAHUa

COPIEM A FOTO, COPIEM O QUE ESCREVI, ACRESCENTEM, POSTEM NO PROPRIO FLICKR, COLOQUEM UM LINK LEVANDO PARA CA, SEI LA, QUALQUER COISA JÁ AJUDA !!!

VAMOS TENTAR TRAZER ESSAS MARAVILHAS PRO BRASIL !!!

Colorama, RISQUE, Impala, La Pogee, Passe Nati, Sancion Angel, Mohda, Jubby, BIG Universo, Realce, PanVel, Hits, Ludurana, Extase, Ana Hickman, Max Beauty, Dote, Guga, 5Cinco...

in the Sicilian city of Randazzo, is Celebrated in mid-August day, hits principal feast of the "living vara" that evokes the mystery of the faith of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven with soul and body, for this reference She is call Mary Assumption; the feast may be originated around the sixteenth century; the "vara" (Sicilian name Refers to "float"), it's a "votive machine" about 20 meters high, made of a structure in iron and wood, decorated with gilding, mirrors, colored coatings, Whose allegorical meaning Seems To have inspirations from the figures reproduced in a painting by John Caniglia of 1548 (you can admire it inside the Crucifix chapel of the Basilica of St. Mary in Randazzo), machine consisting about several plans and rotating, with hand-operated mechanisms, and making reference to the rotation of the heavens of the medieval conception. The first low part of the "machine-float" is the Tomb of Mary, full of flowers, but as She got to the Sky also with Her Body, it's an empty tomb, a bit higher up we find St. Thomas in prayer, still more on we find St. Michael the Archangel with a sword, surrounded by singing Angels; on the highest level it finally takes place the Virgin Mary. Various "young actors", present on float are children of various age, which intone chants turned to Virgin Mary, each with its own role, each surrounded by a iron structures for own security. Up to 1960 different "human figures" were all male, included Maria Assunta; in ancient times the fast of the children was strictly Observed (even now, more for practical reasons to stay on the float, Which for devotional Reasons); in ancient times the float at the end of the procession was always assaulted from the faithful, taking with them the precious souvenirs of the event, considering That like relics; to the end of the 18th century the traditional feast He had a decline, abolished in 1795, then restored in the Second Half of 1800, again suppressed the first in 1911 for the raging cholera, then to the events linked to the First and Second World War, than the feast started again in 1952, at first once every 5 years, then every three years finally annually since 1973. During the trip the children receive from Inhabitants leaning out of windows and balconies, candies, biscuits, sweets of various genre, so this "rain of sweets" shows a more happy and picturesque manifestation, but so the children "are distracted" being from "hanging" in several meters from the soil (likeably who is finding down, he may be "bombarded" by a shower of candies and chocolates).

PS: This report, which I have Made 15 August 2016 in the town of Randazzo, to whom I gave the name of the movie "for love, only for love", I dedicate it to my friend professional nurse Guido, whose its universal love for people and animals was opposed by those who are unable to understand his greatness, has meant that he decided yesterday to get out of life scenes.

.....................................

What can I say?

The new proposed layout of Flickr is a mess visually and honestly isn't an improvement. Photos don't look better when viewed in the new version. The page looks cluttered and displeasing to the eye. What really upsets me though is the changes to the description and commenting systems...

Tiny, tiny boxes for commenting (which at the moment don't load from oldest to newest) and unless you click a button, only one line of text is viewable on the description. I know "a picture is worth a thousand words" but to really participate and create a sense of community, there needs to be space for conversation and discussion.

Flickr has been my favourite site for the last 5 1/2 years. I've loved that sense of a community and made on-line friends on here that I've now "known" for years. That didn't happen by just uploading and dumping photos. It happened because people were talking about their photos and other members' images. Flickr's new layout is going to make that even more difficult and awkward.

This site is becoming a dumping ground - a storage site for images. That's not what I signed up for - or paid money for. I have little hope Flickr will listen to complaints but wanted to register my dislike for what is being done.

Today marks my first Flickr birthday. It was one year ago today that I joined and uploaded my first images. Photography has become a passion for me and Flickr has certainly helped fuel it. The awesome photographers and terrific people I have met here on Flickr have greatly enriched this hobby. I want to thank all of you, my Flickr friends, for making this such a terrific community.

Many things have changed in my photography and my life this past year. I married my soulmate and we recently learned she will be the mother of my second child in August. My son started at a terrific new school and has become an avid skateboarder. I had the opportunity to take some wonderful trips to places like Alaska, the Redwoods, and nearly every corner of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I feel that my photography has grown to the point that I at least have a basic idea of how to get the image in my mind onto the sensor. I look back now at my archives and know I could do better today with the same opportunities. I love to learn, so I have hope of growing into an actual photographer in the years ahead. I've even been fortunate enough to license a handful of images for use on the web, all of them from contacts made here on flickr. I've had the pleasure of learning and sharing experiences, ideas, and techniques with some of the very talented people here on Flickr. I learned a great deal from reading, from my photo buddies Todd & Tom, from Redgum's flickr outing, and from Jim Altengarten's class at MHCC. I've also learned by doing thanks to the nearly 40,000 images I've put through my trusty Nikon in the past 15 months!

In the next year I hope to expand my photographic knowledge and enhance my experiences. I will soon attend a photo weekend put on by Rocky Mountain School of Photography, I'm really looking forward to that. I'm trying to put the brake on my itchy shutter finger and take more time to compose better images with fewer exposures. There is a time and place for holding the shutter button until the card is full, but it is also very satisfying to come home from a day of shooting with 40 or 50 images that result in 20 or 30 keepers. I want to continue to learn new techniques and work on making the operation of my equipment second nature. One of my biggest frustrations is to look at a series of images back home and realize that if I had remembered some little feature or tried some other setting while I was in the field they would have been better! I want to work on some areas that I know I can be much better like portraits, macro shots, creative lighting, and color management.

Most of all I look forward to living and documenting my family life. I have an active tweener, a newborn, a new mother, and some very excited extended family! Sounds like plenty of temptation for that shutter finger!

This image is a Mosaic made up of many of the 351 public images I've posted in this first year. Thank you for sharing and enhancing my Flickr experience, I look forward to the next year! (Flickr 1 Year Mosaic Web)

Unfortunately, the Flickr have lost some of my photos on its servers. Relevant pages were just empy spaces with likes and comments but without images itselves. Furthermore, i even wasn't able to replace images with backup copies. I had to delete old entries and upload them again. Commentaries were deleted as well, of course.

UP TO eight residential tower blocks once owned by Wirral Council are to be closed.

New owners Wirral Partnership Homes says bringing the towers up to standard, coupled with low occupancy rates, means they are no longer viable.

The blocks earmarked for the axe over the next one to three years are Melrose, Sandbourne, Thornridge (all Moreton), Flambards (Woodchurch) and Thorsway (Rock Ferry).

Five high rise blocks are to be refurbished: Sunningdale (Moreton), Liscard House (Liscard), Brackendale (Woodchurch) and The Towers (Tranmere) with Knowsley Court (Rock Ferry) and Neston Gardens (Birkenhead) being subject to minor remedial work and further review.

Council's cabinet member for housing, Cllr GD, said that times have changed and the desire for high rise living has dwindled.

"Some of these blocks used to have long waiting lists for tenants. Now they can hardly fill them," he said.
