The inverted image in the spherical lens is inverted as expected. Note also the real image location: on the near side of the flask, not inside the sphere. A real image reflected from the inner surface of a soap bubble is similarly inverted, but is inside the bubble. Images in water drops by refraction are not 'in' the drop in this sense.

The summer solstice had no bearing on the lighting conditions on this wet and thoroughly dismal Cumbrian evening. Precisely on time at 18:20, Direct Rail Services 37606 and 37611 get underway from DRS Kingmoor Depot on the last leg of their journey with the 6M22 Hunterston to Sellafield nuclear flask, seen here crossing the 1942 LMS-built Eden river bridge on 21st June 2012. 37611 was delivered new to Cardiff Canton depot in September 1963 as D6871. Subsequently carrying the numbers 37171 (1974) 37690 (1987) and finally 37611 (1995), she was acquired from the European Passenger Services fleet by DRS in June 1997. 37606 was delivered new to Gateshead depot in January 1963 as D6790. Subsequently bearing the running numbers 37090 (1974), 37508 (1986) and 37606 (1996), she was acquired by DRS from the European Passenger Services fleet in May 2002. Just 48 hours later the track on the curve in the distance, at Caldew Junction, was under water flooded by the river. You can judge how high the level of the river rose by looking at the river Eden peacefully flowing by!

With the land to the left of this shot now a building site, and the vegetation now cleared for possible Electrification, we seen the weekly Flask train pass.

There is a possibility this might be the last appearance of 37610 on this working. This proved not to be the case. 22nd February 2017.

Standing behind the buffer stop at the end of the Flask Siding, which was a short siding off the original formation, as we look north towards Blaenau Ffestiniog on the disused freight only line, at Trawsfynydd in Gwynnedd, North Wales.

The Blaenau Ffestiniog-Bala line closed as a through route on the 4th January 1960 and lifted, apart from a 5 mile stretch at the northern end Blaenau Ffestiniog-Trawsfynydd, to serve the then new Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station (since closed) and take away spent nuclear rods.

The last flask train to leave here was on the 8th August 1995, behind class 31 locomotives 31255 and 31199.

The last train here before the line closed on the 31st October 1998 was, Hertfordshire Railtours 'The Trawsfynydd Lament' top and tailed by 56108 (buffer end) and 47785, running as the 1T70 15.04 Trawsfynydd-London Euston.

Direct Rail Services Class 68s 68016 "Fearless" and 68034 accelerate through Kings Norton with the 15:44 6M63 Bridgwater F.D to Crewe Coal sidings (Drs) nuclear flasks. I think this was the debut of 034 on the Bridgwater. It and 033 will both be going up north for use with TPE but will retain full DRS livery, a la 68008 and 009.

The points for the short flask siding off to the right and the loco head shunt straight on, we look south towards Bala at the terminus of the disused freight only line, from Blaenau Ffestiniog to here Trawsfynydd in Gwynnedd, North Wales.

With engineering underway along the Cumbrian Coast Line, the Nuclear Flasks bound for Crewe had to go the long way round via Penrith and Shap Summit. Direct Rail Services 66301 passes a miserable, rainy Longton working 6Z45 Immingham - Crewe TnT with 66419, the photo isn't the best as I had a few focusing issues so I settled with just 5 focus points once I realised it would of been to late/risky to attempt again, the rain doesn't help either, but as its the first flask train I've 'photted' through my local shack it had to be uploaded, hopefully this becomes a new regular flow now and I can finally have regular freight back on the Stoke - Derby part of line!

Running some 40 minutes early veteran Class 20 locos no 20305 and 20309 top and tail the Heysham to Sellafield flask train as it crosses Eskmeals viaduct.

DRS 'Bodysnatchers' 57004 and 57008 'Telford International Railfreight Park June 2009' heading the 6C22 06:40 Kingmoor Depot to Sellafield nuclear flask train. The trailing load of this service, which included an 'MoD' flask near the rear of the train, obtained some pleasing exhaust as the locomotives accelerated away from a signal check. English Damside, Carlisle City Centre on 15th July 2011.

57004 began life in March 1965 as D1828 in the Toton (D16) District. It has carried dual-green, BR Blue and Railfreight liveries, being converted to a class 57 with General Motors traction for Freightiner in March 1999. It was the first Class 57 to be scrapped. moving from LSL Crewe to a Stafford scrapyard on 5th July 2023, the stripped bodyshell then being immediately disposed of.

57008 began life as D1644 in December 1964 and was allocated to Newport Ebbw Junction. It has carried dual-green, BR Blue. Railfreight and Freightliner (Railfreight grey) liveries before conversion to General Motors class 57 in December 1999 with Freightliner. As 47060 it also carried the name 'Halewood Silver Jubilee 1988' between 1988 and 1995. Surplus to DRS' requirements, it was acquired by WCRC in early 2022.

In 2007 Freightliner started to replace its Class 57s with new Class 66 locos. Initially six Class 57s (the second batch) were returned to their leasing company, and were redeployed with DRS in July 2007. Direct Rail Services owned nine examples of the class, comprising 57002 (47322), 57003 (47317), 57004 (47347), 57007 (47332), 57008 (47060), 57009 (47079), 57010 (47231), 57011 (47329), 57012 (47204). These locomotives worked alongside the Class 20/3s, 37's and 66's which were also operated by the company then. All the 57's were painted in the DRS 'Compass' Blue livery.

FNA nuclear flask wagon, sits under the crane adjacent to Dungeness Nuclear power station, awaiting to be loaded.

Just managed to complete my still-life which I started a few days ago. I decided to let this sit for a few days because some parts were quite a challenge to paint. I was trying to connect the shoes to the whole composition. You might be able to see the extra around this area. This tiny pair of shoe from my childhood has since been encased entirely in silver for preservation.
