Fear not: I am not sacrificing my daughter in the interests of photography - she's dancing around the fire in a mix of playing American Indians (we call it "red indians" but anyway) and emulating the children in the Secret Garden (a film).
It's really hard to find a consistent logo for The Flash, so this might not be perfect. I don't know much about the character, but he seems to have the best logo so far. There are four colors charted, but if you want a red background that's a fifth.

Used a filter layer (Alien Skin filters) in Photoshop and then deleted from that layer over James to get proper skin tones.

Experimenting with high-speed flash sync. Shot in TAv mode; probably should have shot in shutter priority only. Live and learn. :)
Another shot of this wolf spider with her babies on her back. After I took several photographs of it in the jar, we walked down the street and released it. I took a few more shots of it on the ground, but there was a lot of debris and grass that made it hard to see this fantastic spider. The other day I worked on eliminating the distracting background and here's the result. This was taken at night with an on-camera flash.
Now I need to learn how to add a nice shadow to make it more realistic.
I've had this flash for years. It's not particularly good, but it's not particularly awful either. I'd forgotten about it until a friend asked me to take some pics of their kids, and I needed something I could bounce rather than use the 20D's built in.
Some more skate photos using the flash. I still have things to learn about flash photography. Please comment and give some advice. I use a Nikon SB-600.
I faked this, but this shows what would happen if you used the flash at a shutted speed higher than your camera's maximum flash sync speed. ("Sync" is short for "synchronization.") In this hypothetical sample, the shutter travels from top to bottom. Normally, one curtain opens all the way, the flash goes off, and then the second curtain follows to close the shutter. In this example, imagine that the second surtain had already travelled about 1/3 the distance down before the first curtain opened all the way. As soon as the first curtain opened all the way, the flash went off, but the top 1/3 of the frame was already covered up by the second curtain when the flash went off. There would usually be enough ambient light to allow some of the subject to show (as illustrated), although it would be grossly underexposed.
