The Flaming Mountains (Chinese: 火焰山; pinyin: huǒyànshān) or Gaochang Mountains are barren, eroded, red sandstone hills in the Tian Shan of Xinjiang. They lie near the northern rim of the Taklamakan Desert and east of the city of Turpan. Their striking gullies and trenches caused by erosion of the red sandstone bedrock give the mountains a flaming appearance at certain times of the day

Flaming Barriers is a 1924 American silent drama film directed by George Melford and written by Byron Morgan and Harvey F. Thew. The film stars Jacqueline Logan, Antonio Moreno, Walter Hiers, Charles Stanton Ogle, Robert McKim, Luke Cosgrave, and Warren Rogers.

The film was released on January 27, 1924, by Paramount Pictures.

As described in a film magazine review, Joseph Pickens, a leading citizen of Burbridge, plans to control the invention of a fast motor fire truck, which old Patrick Malone is exploiting. Young Sam Barton comes to Malone's machine shop to work as an efficiency man.

Sam falls in love with Malone's daughter Jerry and they have several adventures together. When a forest fire threatens Burbridge, Sam and Jerry drive the fire truck through the flames to save the town.

Malone's invention brings him riches, the scheme of Pickens is defeated, and Sam wins the affections of Jerry.

Whenever I get a new vintage lens, I want to buy more. To combat this, I pull out the Fuji X-Pro1 and put on a Takumar lens and take some pictures. This time it was the 85mm f/1.9. Straight out of camera jpegs with all settings set neutral or 0. This camera and lens combo does a wonderful job of capturing the beauty of these Flaming Sunrise Gladiolus. Absolutely breathtaking.

Bit of a strange one this.

I was asked by JustinTimberlake.com to do an illustration of Wayne Coyne - the singer bloke from The Flaming Lips - and make a video of myself drawing it. It's now up on his website as the visual component of an interview with the aforementioned Mr Coyne.

You can see the whole thing here, if you're so inclined: www.justintimberlake.com/news/supersonic_portrait_of_wayn...

Some other artist-type butts in every so often with his Big Painting. It's a bit long too.

Don't blame me.

The picture we may take of the Eastern view of Flaming Mountains cannot compete with earlier information about the 100 kilometres long mountain chain. There is just no shinning red light. The air is filled with dust and the sun cannot come through. What we see is a faint colourless slope ending in a top at 500 meters above sea level, a nice background for the quiet murmuring water of the Mutougou River in the valley.

it´s that crazy midnight sun again...

I was going to use this for Aug. 18ths ODC Challenge, Elvis Presley, but I didn't get this until today. Elvis starred in this movie back on December 16, 1960. I have watched a few of his other movies and IMHO I think this is by far his best performance. It's a dramatic roll and I wish he'd done more of them.

"Flaming June," a renowned oil painting by Sir Frederic Leighton, completed in 1895.

Subject:

The painting depicts a sleeping woman in a vibrant orange gown, rendered in Leighton's classicist Academic style, emphasizing beauty and sensuality.

Artistic Movement:

Leighton was a proponent of the Aesthetic Art movement, which prioritized artistic beauty and form over narrative or moralistic themes.

Inspiration:

The composition was inspired by the posture of a tired model, Dorothy Dene, who frequently modeled for Leighton. The pose also echoes Michelangelo's sculpture "Night".

History:

"Flaming June" was initially conceived as a motif for a marble bath in another of Leighton's works, "Summer Slumber." After its initial exhibition, it fell into obscurity before being rediscovered and acquired by the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico in the 1960s, where it is now a celebrated masterpiece.

Have a great Weekend :-))

Oklahoma City New Year's Eve.

Shooting The Flaming Lips was unfortunately a bit of a miserable experience. After telling photographers that we'd all be able to go in after the first half of a song and shoot through song #3, they decided that they were going to split us up into groups of 20 and each group would only get to shoot for ONE song. I was in the second group, which meant that I got no ball shots and that I got shots of Wayne Coyne riding a gorilla. The song was also shorter. Yeah, I am a little depressed about it.

Lessons learned from this experience:

1. Festival organizers/bands/powers that be change their mind within hours about restrictions so it's just best to be their super early and skip Mew next time. Those jerks cut their hair anyhow! (If only I'd known!)

2. Wayne Coyne only wants to be photographed if he's in a large plastic bubble or riding a gorilla.

Me attempting a different style of processing... intially I wanted to do something awesome à la "Kim Akrigg" but turns out that I'm just not made for it haha. Or I chose the wrong image to play around with.

Found this one at the florist this morning, ain't she a beauty ... technique: Put it in a window to get backlight, use a flash with a big diffuser, crank up apperture to around 20, take 3 shots from your tripod with +- 1 in AEB (use manual bracketing for flash). Merge result to HDR, remove background and place on a very small canvas ... Flaming Tulip without background - done.

One of the shots I managed to take last week was of a single flame. There were no other light sources and it came out quite well on a naturally black canvas, and when I looked at it within Lightroom it looked very much like half of a skull – or at least I thought so.

I duplicated and flipped it, and then merged it together with the original with a few tweaks to get this fun flaming skull image.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.
