Gypsum ("fishtail selenite") (public display, Minnesota Discovery Center, Chisholm, Minnesota, USA)
A mineral is a naturally-occurring, solid, inorganic, crystalline substance having a fairly definite chemical composition and having fairly definite physical properties. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are over 6000 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common. Mineral classification is based on anion chemistry. Major categories of minerals are: elements, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, and silicates.
The sulfate minerals all have one or more sulfate anions (SO4 -2).
Gypsum is a moderately common hydrous calcium sulfate mineral (CaSO4·2H2O). Gypsum has a nonmetallic luster, is usually clearish to whitish, is soft (H≡2), and rather fragile/brittle. Gypsum has 3 cleavage planes, one of which is well developed (“one good cleavage), and the other two are not well developed (“two poor cleavages”). Broken gypsum specimens are frequently thin plates - the consequence of the one good cleavage plane.
Gypsum has economic value as a mineral. It is the starting ingredient for making plaster and wallboard.
The specimen shown above is a distinctive form of twinned gypsum that is nicknamed "fishtail selenite". "Selenite" is often perceived to be a macrocrystalline "variety" of gypsum, but it is not. Selenite is gypsum - it differs in no way from gypsum - it is gypsum. Use of the term "selenite" should be discouraged and is here considered an unnecessary objective junior synonym.
Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed, but nearly identical specimens are known from the Naica Mine in Chihuahua State, Mexico

Common name: Jaggery Palm, Toddy Palm, Fishtail Palm, Wine Palm, Mari (Hindi), Kontalpanai கொண்டல் பனை (Tamil), Anappana (Malayalam)
Botanical name: Caryota urens
- [ (kair-ee-OH-tuh) or (kar-RY-oh-tuh) from the Greek karyon (nut); (UR-ens) burning, stinging ]
Family: Arecaceae (palm family)
- [ (ar-ek-AY-see-ay) the Palm family (formerly Palmae) ]
Origin: India, Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka
Monocarpic palm exhibiting an erect single trunk, up to 98 ft tall, bearing ringed scars left by fallen leaves. The trunk reaches its maximum height before bloom. Leaves are 9 to 20 ft long. Flowers are unisexual on monoecious plants, alternating on apical, branched inflorescences, enveloped by 2 carinate, marginally fibrous spathes.
Fruits, as large as cherries, are globose and reddish. Blooms appear from top to lower branches, and after the last bloom on the lowest level the palm dies. The sap of this palm is very high in simple sugars. In India and other Asian countries, the palm is tapped for its syrup which is often fermented into an alcoholic beverage called toddy. The syrup is also processed into a granular sugar called jaggery.

Here's a 'photobooth' picture of my in my M65 Fishtail Parka! It is the real deal from way back... Although the patches are much newer. I wear it when it's COLD (like today)... It keeps me warm and dry, and I can wear a jacket and tie underneath it and ride my Vespa in style!
"Fishtail Palm Patterns" by Patti Deters. A closeup view of this Fishtail Palm frond shows a captivating arrangement of lush, tiny green palm leaves creating an orderly pattern of outward branches. The well-organized leaves display intricate textures and shapes, making one realize nature is a most amazing artist and engineer. Thank you for viewing this picture. The more I look at it the more I’m convinced it is meant to be this way up. There is a weight at the bottom right at the point of the fishtail.
Just having fun with Marly. She looks so different done up like this.. :O
Also playing around with photoshopping eye colors. :D
