Edgar Allan Poe died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at the tender age of 41. News of his death reached his mother-in-law, Maria Clemm, in New York two days later. Shortly thereafter, she appears to have approached Rufus W. Griswold and requested that he edit and publish a collection of Poe’s writings. Mrs. Clemm had a contract written up on October 15, 1849 which granted Griswold full power of attorney. Griswold immediately set to work. He asked Nathaniel Parker Willis and James Russell Lowell to revise previously published essays they had written about Poe so that these could be used as introductory material.
The first two volumes of Poe’s works (shown here) were advertised as early as October of 1849, but were probably not actually available until about January 10, 1850. (Both of these first edition volumes carry the copyright date of 1849. In later editions, volume 1 continues to carry the 1849 copyright, while volume 2 carries a copyright date of 1850.) Poe’s works grew to four volumes by 1856. The two additional volumes, also edited by Griswold, collected more of Poe’s critical, editorial and miscellaneous writings. The four-volume Griswold set became the standard edition of Poe’s works for 25 years, and served as the model for nearly another quarter of a century. Here is what Arthur Conan Doyle says of this collection of his short stories:
"I have written 'Impressions and Tales' upon the title-page of this volume, because I have included within the same cover two styles of work which present an essential difference. The second half of the collection consists of eight stories, which explain themselves. The first half is made up of a series of pictures of the past which may be regarded as trial flights towards a larger ideal which I have long had in my mind. It has seemed to me that there is a region between actual story and actual history which has never been adequately exploited. I could imagine, for example, a work dealing with some great historical epoch, and finding its interest not in the happenings to particular individuals, their adventures and their loves, but in the fascination of the actual facts of history themselves. These facts might be colored with the glamour which the writer of fiction can give, and fictitious characters and conversations might illustrate them; but nonetheless the actual drama of history and not the drama of invention should claim the attention of the reader. I have been tempted sometimes to try the effect upon a larger scale; but meanwhile these short sketches, portraying various crises in the story of the human race, are to be judged as experiments in that direction." -- Arthur Conan Doyle.

What could possibly be scary about a pet cemetery? Stephen King answers that question in spades with one of his scariest stories. He tells the tale of a family that moves into a small town in Maine and strange things start happening from day one. The two children are hurt in accidents and, soon after, the family cat is run over outside their new home. The cat is buried in the “pet sematary” in nearby woods where the town kids bury their dead animals. Now the paranormal story begins and soon all hell breaks loose.
