First, a man and a woman are subjects of a top-secret government experiment designed to produce extraordinary psychic powers. Then, they are married and have a child. A daughter. Early on the daughter shows signs of a wild and horrifying force growing within her. Desperately, her parents try to train her to keep that force in check, to "act normal." Now the government wants its brainchild back - for its own insane ends.

The Ashley Book of Knots. After being taught how to tie a Monkey's Fist by some old Sea Dog, I was told that The Ashley Book of Knots was a hard to obtain book that was indispensable for anyone needing to know anything and everything about knots. A visit to a second hand book store around the corner to my apartment and I found this first edition (1944) book that I bought for $10. The year was 1980 and I've packed this book around with me ever since.

First Editions: Firegold® stands out with its brilliant lemon-lime foliage. The new growth is soft yellow changing to lemon, and finally to lime-green. Color is at its most brilliant in full sun.

Chicago Botanic Garden: FIRST EDISIONS® FIREGOLD spirea features bright lime green foliage but has the arching habit and prolific flower production of other bridalwreath spirea.

The genus Spiraea consists of small to medium sized flowering shrubs with a fine-textured twiggy mounding habit. The small simple leaves are generally lance-shaped and held close to the branch. Spring to early summer abundant blooms tend to be in white or pink tones, depending on the species and/or cultivar. It's by Sidney Sheldon, it's a suspense novel, in hardcover, a first edition, and it mentions one of my favorite places - The Duke of Edinburgh pub in Cupertino.

I am so picking this up.

Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse were delighted at the chance to move into the Bramford, one of Manhattan's oldest and most celebrated apartment houses. Their friend Hutch urged them not to; he knew of too many shadows in the Bramford's past -- unsavory tenants like Adrian Marcato, who had practiced witchcraft, and the monstrous Trench sisters. But Rosemary and Guy were clear-thinking and not at all superstitious; they dismissed Hutch's warnings and moved in.

At first they were completely happy. Rosemary hung curtains and planned a nursery for the baby she hoped to have some day. Guy pursued his career as a stage and television actor. They met their neighbors, who were friendly and unintrusive.

And then, one day when Rosemary was down in the basement laundry room, a girl her own age came in . . .

Quietly and with a compelling matter-of-factness, author Ira Levin tells a story of mounting terror that a reader can never quite forget.

"At eight o'clock, promptly, we backed out and -- crossed the river. As we crept toward the shore, in the thick darkness, a blinding glory of white electric light burst suddenly from our forecastle, and lit up the water and warehouses as with a noon-day glare. Another big change, this, -- no more flickering, smoky, pitch-dripping, ineffectual torch-baskets, now: their day is past." [From "Life on the Mississippi." page 260]

“Life on the Mississippi” is a classic travel story by Mark Twain, which contains an account of his childhood experiences, as well as his life on the river as a steamboat pilot. It is his first-hand look at navigating the Mississippi by riverboat and the changes that came about after the Civil War. The book was written at about the same time as “Huckleberry Finn” and shares several themes with that classic. Huck Finn makes a lengthy cameo on pages 42–61, a story within the chapter detailing Huck and Jim's attempt to reach Cairo which does not appear in Huckleberry Finn, published two years later.

In September 1883, “The Atlantic Monthly” published a review of the book, in which the following was said: "The material offered by observations on the journey is various beyond enumeration, and much of it is extremely amusing. Hoaxes and exaggerations palmed off by pilots and other natives along the way upon supposed ignorant strangers; stories of gamblers and obsolete robbers; glimpses of character and manners; descriptions of scenery and places; statistics of trade; Indian legends; extracts from the comments of foreign travelers, -- all these occur, interspersed with two or three stories of either humorous or tragic import, or of both together."
