Reason to be cheerful ?
Though my aunt was born in 1899 and in much of her teens had a father, mother and family - she, like many of that era - was and for much of her life aware and fearful of the work house system - some of which continued into the 1960s.
When her father suddenly died during the Great War most of her hitherto largely personal to herself hosiery factory income needed to be used for her family's upkeep. With her boyfriend sweetheart killed in the Great War her working life was unrelenting. Five and a half days of each week was spent in the factory.
A normal work day was twelve hours long.
At the time of her birth, as during decades before, many English districts had considerable numbers of extreme poor. Many that could not sustain themselves became inmates of workhouses.

Mr. Luke Fildes who sketched the above picture of applicants for casual workhouse places in 1869 as a contribution to the first edition of a new publication Graphic , later became an illustrator for Charles Dickens.
Mr. Fildes "Casuals" sketch established his name. It would have been a fearful sight to many - enough to draw tears of sympathy for the ragged unfortunates and a dog.
As for my aunt - she died aged 87 . Her end came in a former workhouse that had been made over to be a hospital for older persons . Thankfully she did not learn that fact.

I cataloged this first edition of Mickiewicz's Pan Tadeusz into our library's Rare Book Collection in April, 2006.
A simple google search for our library will bring up our card catalog. Anyone wondering what we have can look it up:
Graham, the central character of the novel, awakens into a troubled world after a two-hundred year slumber, much like Rip Van Winkle. The compound interest on his bank accounts has made him the richest man in the world and a very powerful one indeed. A trust known as the White Council used Graham’s wealth to establish a vast political and economic world order, which is now much hated by the people. Word spreads that the fabled sleeper has awakened and the people demand to see him. The Council, which rules the world in his name, prefers that he remain out of the way and places him under house arrest. He is liberated by revolutionaries and he soon learns the ugly truth about this new world, which persuades him to take part in the revolution.
The novel has plenty of action which more than makes up for the author’s socialist inclinations. It has engine-driven “aeroplanes” with 600-foot wing spans and smaller, nimbler “aeropiles,” it has a revolution and a counter-revolution, and there are battles fought in the air for supremacy.

“Captains Courageous” is a coming-of-age tale of fishing off the New England coast. It is the story of Harvey Cheyne, a spoiled rich kid, who stumbles overboard an ocean liner and is rescued by fisherman Manuel Fidello off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and brought aboard a small fishing boat. There he meets Disko Troop, captain of the fishing boat, who refuses to take the young man back to port but agrees to take him on as part of the crew against Harvey’s wishes. Over the course of the novel, Harvey befriends the captain’s son Dan and has some sense knocked into him. Dan helps the arrogant, overly pampered Harvey become a hard-working, self-reliant man at sea.
“Captains Courageous” is also an excellent portrayal of life in the Gloucester fishing fleet of Massachusetts, written while the newlywed Kipling lived in Vermont. Although Kipling lived in Vermont several years and was married to an American this is his only novel with entirely American settings, themes and major characters. The American edition of the book is dedicated to James Conland, M.D., of Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Conland had brought the Kiplings elder daughter into the world and had been a member of the Massachusetts fishing fleet. It is he who took Kipling to explore the wharves and quays of Boston and Gloucester.
Considered one of the great sea novels of the 19th century, “Captains Courageous” was made into an excellent Victor Fleming film in 1937 starring Freddie Bartholomew (Harvey Cheyne), Spencer Tracy (his rescuer Manuel Fidello),
Lionel Barrymore (Captain Disko Troop) and Mickey Rooney (Dan Troop).
After looking at my old books for Rooibos's photo shoot, I couldn't reist taking a picture of him with my first edition copy of The Story Girl by L. M. Montgomery. The cover of this book is just so pretty--I couldn't let it go to waste. :)

This British edition contains 220 Illustrations by Dan Beard.and preceded the American edition by a few days. It is Mark Twain’s time travel novel. In it, Yankee engineer Hank Morgan from Connecticut is accidentally transported back in time to medieval England and the court of King Arthur. Hank fools the inhabitants of that time into thinking he is a magician—and soon uses his Yankee ingenuity and knowledge of modern technology to become a "magician" in earnest, stunning the English with such feats as demolition and fireworks. He attempts to modernize the society, but in the end he is unable to prevent the death of Arthur and a censure against him by the Catholic Church, which grows fearful of his power.
Twain wrote the book as a satire of romantic notions of chivalry after being inspired by a dream in which he was a knight himself, and severely inconvenienced by the weight and cumbersome nature of his armor. [Source: Wikipedia]
Hollywood put its own spin on the story with a 1949 musical comedy starring Bing Crosby, Rhonda Fleming, William Bendix and Sir Cedric Hardwicke.

After I posted the photos on this car I discovered it was an error car....no windows. I've no idea why I didn't notice before I opened it, but it went straight into a plexiglass container. Going to have to be more careful before I open these I suppose.

This is the second book in Farmer's Riverworld series, a sequel to "To Your Scattered Bodies Go."
The planet was called Riverworld -- huge and mysterious, with one central river that flowed for countless thousands of miles from a hidden source to an unknown end. But worse than the violation of all known physical laws that the planet itself displayed was the mystery of how -- and why -- all humanity had been reborn along the shores of the great river. For reborn they were, every last soul, from the first prehistoric humans to the latter-day inhabitants of the Moon.
Sam Clemens is one who finds himself reborn on Riverworld, and with a shipload of reincarnated Vikings and a blood brother whose first life was spent hunting saber tooth tigers and mastodons, he has sailed the great river as he did the Mississippi of old. But his voyage comes to an untimely end when a great meteorite plunges into the stream and he is knocked unconscious. When he comes to, the mysterious aliens who for their own reasons established the Riverworld have contrived to repair all the damage caused by the disaster. Only now one new element has been introduced -- iron. And with iron at hand, Clemens can build his own paddle steamer, and on this fabulous riverboat he can make his epic journey to the headwaters of the river and the heart of the panet-sized mystery which is the Riverworld.
A television series loosely based on the Riverworld saga went into production for the Sci-Fi channel in 2001 but only the feature-length pilot episode Riverworld was completed. It was first aired in 2003. It used elements from "To Your Scattered Bodies Go" and "The Fabulous Riverboat." In 2010, a 4-hour TV movie, Riverworld was produced and released by Syfy (formerly The Sci-fi Channel) in the US and by Studio Universal elsewhere, written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe. The protagonist is Matt Ellman, an American war reporter, played by Tahmoh Penikett. The main villain is Richard Francis Burton, although in the books he is the protagonist and is written more as a hero than a villain.
Little Raven, also known as Hosa (Young Crow), was from about 1855 until his death in 1889 a principal chief of the Southern Arapaho Indians. He negotiated peace between the Southern Arapaho and Cheyenne and the Comanche, Kiowa, and Plains Apache. He also secured rights to the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation in Indian Territory.
After the Pike's Peak Gold Rush of 1858 brought thousands of white miners to dig gold out of the Indians' land, the miners built a large village called Denver. Little Raven (as well as his neighboring chief, Chief Niwot) visited the Denver gold camp and welcomed the white settlers, maintaining a stance of peaceful coexistence with the whites. But, he expressed the hope that they would not stay after they had found all the yellow metal that they needed. The white settlers not only stayed, but thousands more of them came.
Along with six chiefs of the Southern Cheyenne and three others of the Arapaho, Little Raven signed the Fort Wise Treaty on 18 February 1861, but he became frustrated when whites failed to comply with the agreement. In 1863 he toured Washington, DC. During the summer of 1864 Little Raven took care to keep his band of Arapaho south of the Platte River and to avoid white soldiers and buffalo hunters by avoiding forts, trails and settlements.
In 1864, Little Raven's disappointment with the United States turned to anger following the Sand Creek massacre. Little Raven and his band of Arapaho survived the massacre because they had camped far away from the other Cheyenne and Arapaho. Still, Little Raven sought peace in the form of the Little Arkansas Treaty on 17 October 1865, and when this treaty was broken less than eighteen months later, he accepted the Medicine Lodge Treaty on 28 October 1867. The treaty allotted the Southern Arapaho a reservation between the Arkansas and Cimarron rivers in Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma).
Following the Battle of the Washita on November 27, 1868, Little Raven led the Southern Arapaho to Fort Sill for protection. Then the Southern Arapaho and Southern Cheyenne were granted a reservation in western Indian Territory. Eventually Little Raven settled at Cantonment in present day Blaine County, Oklahoma, where the old military hospital served as his home. Little Raven died at Cantonment in 1889. [Source: Wikipedia]
“Lara” is by Lord Byron while “Jacqueline” is from the pen of Samuel Rogers, and was included with Byron’s tale at Byron’s request. Lord Byron is regarded as one of the greatest British poets and remains widely read and influential. He travelled widely across Europe, especially in Italy where he lived for seven years. Among Byron's best-known works are the lengthy narrative poems “Don Juan” and “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage” and the short lyric “She Walks in Beauty.”

Originally serialized in Galaxy magazine between 1872-74, Custer’s autobiography of life as a cavalryman fighting Native-American tribes on the plains appeared in book form only two years before his last stand at Little Bighorn. Introduced by his sketch of the landscape and speculations on the history and nature of the “Indian,” Custer’s narrative begins with the expedition of Major-General Hancock in the spring of 1867 and ends with the Washita campaign on the frontiers of Kansas.
Wells’ story of The First Men in the Moon first appeared as a ten-part serial in The Strand Magazine (Nov. 1900 – August 1901) with illustrations by Claude Shepperson . The story appeared simultaneously in the USA as an eight-part serial in The Cosmopolitan Magazine (Nov. 1900 – June 1901) with illustrations by E. Hering. The Bowen-Merrill Co. of Indianapolis published the first edition of the novel in book form in 1901 with eleven of Hering’s illustrations. The British followed a month later with their own book edition from George Newnes in London with twelve of Shepperson’s illustrations.
Fred Freeman (1907-1988) was a graphic artist who designed and illustrated books on naval history, space exploration and other subjects. He was a successful commercial artist in New York City from the late 1920's through the 30's, doing many illustrations and magazine covers for publications including The Saturday Evening Post and Collier's.
After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, he turned mainly to book design and illustration. He illustrated books on submarines and destroyers from World War II, for the United States Naval Institute. In 1956, with Theodore Roscoe, he designed the ''Picture History of the U.S. Navy,'' published by Charles Scribner's Sons. In 1960, he illustrated a children's book, ''First Men to the Moon,'' written by the scientist, Werner von Braun.
