Little Raven, also known as Hosa (Young Crow), was from about 1855 until his death in 1889 a principal chief of the Southern Arapaho Indians. He negotiated peace between the Southern Arapaho and Cheyenne and the Comanche, Kiowa, and Plains Apache. He also secured rights to the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation in Indian Territory.
After the Pike's Peak Gold Rush of 1858 brought thousands of white miners to dig gold out of the Indians' land, the miners built a large village called Denver. Little Raven (as well as his neighboring chief, Chief Niwot) visited the Denver gold camp and welcomed the white settlers, maintaining a stance of peaceful coexistence with the whites. But, he expressed the hope that they would not stay after they had found all the yellow metal that they needed. The white settlers not only stayed, but thousands more of them came.
Along with six chiefs of the Southern Cheyenne and three others of the Arapaho, Little Raven signed the Fort Wise Treaty on 18 February 1861, but he became frustrated when whites failed to comply with the agreement. In 1863 he toured Washington, DC. During the summer of 1864 Little Raven took care to keep his band of Arapaho south of the Platte River and to avoid white soldiers and buffalo hunters by avoiding forts, trails and settlements.
In 1864, Little Raven's disappointment with the United States turned to anger following the Sand Creek massacre. Little Raven and his band of Arapaho survived the massacre because they had camped far away from the other Cheyenne and Arapaho. Still, Little Raven sought peace in the form of the Little Arkansas Treaty on 17 October 1865, and when this treaty was broken less than eighteen months later, he accepted the Medicine Lodge Treaty on 28 October 1867. The treaty allotted the Southern Arapaho a reservation between the Arkansas and Cimarron rivers in Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma).
Following the Battle of the Washita on November 27, 1868, Little Raven led the Southern Arapaho to Fort Sill for protection. Then the Southern Arapaho and Southern Cheyenne were granted a reservation in western Indian Territory. Eventually Little Raven settled at Cantonment in present day Blaine County, Oklahoma, where the old military hospital served as his home. Little Raven died at Cantonment in 1889. [Source: Wikipedia]
Doughty’s short-lived magazine “The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports” is an important imprint in the history of American printing. It contained the first colored sporting prints made in America. Issued in monthly parts and published from the end of 1830 until the spring of 1834, “The Cabinet” featured articles on hunting, detailed descriptions of newly discovered flora and fauna, and some of the finest examples of early American hand-colored lithography. It was originally the work of the Doughty brothers, Thomas and John, with virtually all of the plates being the work of Thomas, who also founded the Hudson River School. But, by the spring of 1832, the partnership had broken up and Thomas had moved to Boston. An abbreviated third volume (not included here) lacked Thomas’ touch.

“The Jungle Book” by English author Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) is a collection of short animal stories with moral lessons that Kipling may have written for his daughter who died at age six in 1899. The stories appeared in magazines in 1893-94 and came out in book form from MacMillan Publishers in 1894. Kipling was born in India, spent the first six years of his childhood there and returned as an adult to work there for about six-and-a-half years. He put into his stories everything he knew about the Indian jungle, the best known of which are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned boy, Mowgli, who is raised by wolves. Other famous stories in the collection include “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” a heroic mongoose, and “Toomai of the Elephants,” a tale of a young elephant handler.

“Lara” is by Lord Byron while “Jacqueline” is from the pen of Samuel Rogers, and was included with Byron’s tale at Byron’s request. Lord Byron is regarded as one of the greatest British poets and remains widely read and influential. He travelled widely across Europe, especially in Italy where he lived for seven years. Among Byron's best-known works are the lengthy narrative poems “Don Juan” and “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage” and the short lyric “She Walks in Beauty.”
The engraving of the young Edgar Allan Poe is by Sartain. Poe died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at the tender age of 41. News of his death reached his mother-in-law, Maria Clemm, in New York two days later. Shortly thereafter, she appears to have approached Rufus W. Griswold and requested that he edit and publish a collection of Poe’s writings. Mrs. Clemm had a contract written up on October 15, 1849 which granted Griswold full power of attorney. Griswold immediately set to work. He asked Nathaniel Parker Willis and James Russell Lowell to revise previously published essays they had written about Poe so that these could be used as introductory material.
The first two volumes of Poe’s works (shown here) were advertised as early as October of 1849, but were probably not actually available until about January 10, 1850. (Both of these first edition volumes carry the copyright date of 1849. In later editions, volume 1 continues to carry the 1849 copyright, while volume 2 carries a copyright date of 1850.) Poe’s works grew to four volumes by 1856. The two additional volumes, also edited by Griswold, collected more of Poe’s critical, editorial and miscellaneous writings. The four-volume Griswold set became the standard edition of Poe’s works for 25 years, and served as the model for nearly another quarter of a century. The sequel to “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (1865), “Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There” (1872) was published seven years later and is set some six months later than the earlier book. This time Alice enters a fantastic world by stepping through a mirror. “Through the Looking Glass” is not quite as popular as “Wonderland” but it does include celebrated verses such as “Jabberwocky” and “The Walrus and the Carpenter,” and episodes involving “Tweedledum and Tweedledee” and “Humpty Dumpty.” The book features fifty in-text illustrations by John Tenniel.

“The Davenport Brothers were instrumental in building the popularity of the American Spiritualist movement prior to the Civil War. They created a sensation all over the country and in Europe and continued mystifying audiences for years. William Henry and Ira Erastas Davenport introduced the spirit cabinet for mediums to use during a séance. These cabinets, or enclosures, would section the medium off from view while they were producing their strange phenomena. Wells’ story of The First Men in the Moon first appeared as a ten-part serial in The Strand Magazine (Nov. 1900 – August 1901) with illustrations by Claude Shepperson . The story appeared simultaneously in the USA as an eight-part serial in The Cosmopolitan Magazine (Nov. 1900 – June 1901) with illustrations by E. Hering. The Bowen-Merrill Co. of Indianapolis published the first edition of the novel in book form in 1901 with eleven of Hering’s illustrations. The British followed a month later with their own book edition from George Newnes in London with twelve of Shepperson’s illustrations.

RARE. The last copy we have traced at auction was sold at Sotheby’s on 9 December 1999 (lot 42). LITERATURE: RISM B 3557 and BB 3557; Smith and Humphries, no.191. A revised version of Bononcini's original opera of 1715 was premiered at the King's Theatre in London in November 1720. It was one of only two London operas for which Bononcini, Handel's great London rival, published the overture and arias.
