The First Aid Kit i will be taking on my trip. Trip Guides also carry a Group Medical Kit.

An unusual and attractive enamel lapel badge from the St. John Ambulance Association (SJA). If anyone knows what this badge was issued for I would be very grateful to know. The badge’s style of manufacture suggests it could date from the 1930’s to the 1950’s.

The badge shows an eight-pointed Maltese cross, which from 1888 alternating unicorns and lions were added to each quadrant. After the First World War (1914-1918), the eight points of the SJA cross were given specific meanings to represent the eight qualities a first-aider should have:

1) Observation skills.

2) Tactfulness – to make the patient feel confident in their abilities and to ask questions to determine the symptoms of the patient.

3) Resourcefulness.

4) Dexterity – to handle a patient and equipment with care and speed.

5) Discrimination – to decide which injury or patient needs treatment first.

6) Perseverance – to keep going determinedly.

7) Sympathy for the patient.

8) Explicitness – to give clear instructions.

Today, the St. John Ambulance Association (UK) is a registered charity that provides first aid cover at public events and first aid training qualifications. They also provide emergency response and ambulance services. The majority of 40,000+ members are volunteers with over half of them under the age of 25.

Badges and certificates are awarded to members who can go through a number of ‘cadet’ training stages and these are worn as part of the uniform.

For more information, their website is at www.sja.org.uk/sja/default.aspx and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_John_Ambulance_in_England_and_Wales

This badge is made from die-stamped brass with three enamels (black, white & red) and finished in a nickel plating. There is a buttonhole (horseshoe shaped) clasp on the reverse with the text ‘Registered at St Johns Gate London’ and the maker’s name – J.R. Gaunt, London. The badge measures 1 3/16” in diameter (30mm).

Thank you for reading.

Excerpt:

"Yesterday Megan and I taught CPR to a group of University Students who have taken it upon themselves to form a Disaster Response team and are trying to amass skills and knowledge that will be of use to them and their communities. One of the boys, Hameed, is part of our informal “geek squad” at the Taj and wrote the previous post on this blog. Of the four he was the only one who spoke fully fluent English. Two could get by in English and the fourth spoke none, although he was fluent in Pashto, Dari, Urdu and Russian. Many Afghans in this area can speak and read (if they are literate) Pashto, Dari and Urdu. If they are in their forties or fifties, they can get by in Russian. The younger generation tends to know dabbling of English. Pashto is the main spoken language but Dari seeps in from the West, Urdu from the East, and Western Languages trickle in through the occupying armies stationed here.

The class was punctuated by Hameed’s rapid fire translation, side conversations in Pashto, and the boys wrestling matches as they were a little overenthusiastic when practicing the Heimlich maneuver on one another. The best part of the class was the myriad of questions the boys had, indicating both a sincere desire to learn skills applicable to disasters they had witnessed first hand, as well as exposing deep seated cultural difficulties that never arose in my numerous First Aid re-certification classes."

This fellow apparently finds some interesting places.

"The body was reported this morning," Streetwise said, "A passer by found it."

"Who is she?" Prowl asked.

"Unknown," Streetwise answered. "She was an unaligned omnicon. It will take a while to find an ID."

"Turbo's is nearby, someone there may have seen her," the Decepticon Barricade said.

"Good idea," Prowl said. "Cause of death?"

"That's the strange thing," First Aid said, "If this had happened anywhere else, I would have just assumed she was an empty who finally reached the end of the line..."

"There are no empties around here," Barricade said.

"Exactly," First Aid said. "And yet the cause of death appears to be a sudden loss of power, resulting in loss of spark."

"Except she's not dead," the micromaster Minerva said, her transector body parked near by.

"What is that device you're holding? And what do you mean she's not dead?" First Aid asked.

"It's a volt meter from home. It's weak, but I am detecting an electrical pulse. If we get her to an ICU stat, I think we can save her."

"Why didn't you say so?" First Aid said, "We need to move her fast."

"This is a suspicious death," Barricade said, "We need to solve it quickly."

"Agreed, Ill call in a detective to give the scene a closer look, while you and Streetwise investigate and see if you can locate any suspects.
