One day it might be a marmot or a deer; another it's a butterfly or beetle I've never seen before!

These are known as Red Firebugs: I must admit that - until I started searching to give this photo a proper title - I'd never known their name and simply thought of them as 'African Mask bugs' for their resemblance to the faces seen on tribal masks.

I saw this colony of them on a stone wall by a hillside road in the Swiss Alps near Lugano.

There are nymphs (no wing cases) as well as adults.

Aberdeen unfortunately has more than it's fair share of stupid teenage firebugs from what I've seen.

Adult half-way to getting its full colour - I've read this takes about 2 hours.
