The firebug, Pyrrhocoris apterus, is a common insect of the family Pyrrhocoridae. Easily recognizable due to its striking red and black coloration, it may be confused with the similarly coloured though unrelated Corizus hyoscyami (cinnamon bug or squash bug).Pyrrhocoris apterus is distributed throughout the Palaearctic from the Atlantic coast of Europe to northwest China. It has also been reported from the United States, Central America, and India, and is also found in Australia.

The Rhine had more water than a while back. After walking in the city of Koblenz, I crossed the bridge to Pfaffendorf on the river's right bank and jumped about on the stony waterline. I found a place to relax and splash around a bit. Pottering about in the still warm Autumn sun I came upon a little stand of Erigeron. Admiring those pretty flowerheads, I found, too, a handsome Firebug as much intrigued by it as I.
A bit of Sun brought out lots of wonderfully bright Dandelions on the banks of the Meuse River. Bracing myself against the stiff, icy northeaster I yet had a pleasant, leisurely amble as I examined those flower heads. Fewer insects than I'd expected. But I did see this flaming Firebug. It seemed to be foraging but for lack of my magnifying glass I couldn't exactly see what was going on. Firebugs don't seek pollen or nectar but they suck up plant juices. Probably in this case the milk of Dandelion somewhere accessible to Pyrrhocoris's sharp snout in the flower.

Les gendarmes et les mauves sont 2 sujets que j'aime bien essayer de photographier. Là, les 2 étaient réunis et le mode automatique de mon Panasonic a livré un résultat qui me plaît beaucoup.

Spring!
Okay, its only a firebug, but it was the first bug I got in front of the new lens. The lens hoarder has a new baby, a Schneider Kreuznach Curtagon 28mm 4.0 from the 1960's. Its a rather slow lens, but there is no need to stop down with this open aperture performance. Shot is jpeg out of camera without any postprocessing.
