CSR002, CSR009 and SCT005 power away from the temporary speed restriction at Maldon as they head for Brisbane as 7MB9.

After discovering that the Eiffel Tower turned off at night (GRRRR!!), we spent the night huddled beneath, waiting for the light of day. I have some indelible memories underneath the darkened (GRRRR!!) tower:
* The two squads of machine-gun-toting guards, who randomly walked the grounds.
* The bicyclists who solicited donations and later argued stupidly with the guards.
* The cheesesteak vendor in the Ryder Truck, cooking sandwiches all night to club goers heading home.
* The strange dancers next to the cheesesteaks, who were impossibly flexible and gave those waiting for their sammies something to watch.
* The freezing cold and the wind that seemed to work into my bone marrow.
* The port-o-lets which our ladies pronounced filthy, while I didn't think it so very bad.
* Leaning against a ticket booth for hours as shelter from the wind.
* Hearing burglar alarms going off as it approached morning, and having the office security guard politely inform us that we were the ones setting it off.
* Lovers sitting beneath the tower, somehow impervious to the cold and wind, lost in each other.
* And mostly, the drums. Always the sound of multiple deep bongos, and sometimes singing. What were they there for? How long would they play?
These are my memories, along with the constant look at the watch and the knowledge thanks to the GPS of when the sun would come up. When it did, I put my camera onto the manhole cover signaling the center of the tower, and fired the longest exposure I could without a bulb.
And, wordlessly, we left the Eiffel Tower for the train to take us back to St. Michel and thus back to the airport. All of us were ready to quit Paris and go home.

The weather is beautiful, so lets get out of the house and see what UP is running in my backyard? Intel says there is a west bound fleet of trains due, so imagine my chagrin when I set up on the hill and this one unit turd shows up, burnt carbody, no wings, and all, and there is nothing behind the drawbar, just to rub it in. Well, no problem, there will be another train behind it.
So the stack train shows up behind the one unit wonder, and at least it has a 70ace leader, but it is soo grungy that I'm not sure what pain scheme it is in. Well, time to call it a day and hope that when I come back out in another 6 months that UP runs something that has been freshly painted or even washed...
I actually got a few more that were marginally better than this, but not by much.

Not far west of Oklahoma's Curtis Hill lies the small town of Gerlach. The overhead bridge on a county road west of town provides a great vantage point in the afternoon as the mainline and what was then a siding swing through almost 90 degrees of curvature.
It's October of 1994 and due to work commitments I was unable to attend AltaMont in Montana but I was able to take a long weekend and go up to Curtis Hill as a measure of consolation. Towards the end of the day this train came through Quinlan but we were somewhat out of position for it so we chased it to Gerlach where the sun was perfect.
Some of my younger friends wonder why I turn my back on the crusty faded filthy Warbonnets we see still roaming around on BNSF today. One look at this should provide the answer to that question.

Your lips I trust
Never let me down
We've got that faithful touch
Never hurt us now
Cause if you keep me rollin'
I'll take you to the ground
You've got your hands on me
I've got this Filthy beat
We make love in melodies
Love in melodies
We make love in melodies
Oh yeah
We make love in melodies
Love in melodies
Oh
When we lose touch
Words burn to the ground
You're always fighting love
I'm always upside down
The chase it keeps me goin'
Shut up and kiss me now
I feel you always deep
You like this Filthy beat
We make love in melodies
Love in melodies
We make love in melodies
Oh yeah
We make love in melodies
Love in melodies
Oh
No I don't want anyone else
To look at you the way I do
Can't keep my hands to myself
Give me Filthy melodies
Honey trust yourself
Never mind what you heard about me
Can't keep our hands to ourselves
We make love in melodies
Love in melodies
We make love in melodies
Oh yeah
We make love in melodies
Love in melodies
Oh
Love
In melodies

A filthy oil stained 50037 "Illustrious" awaits departure from Exeter St David's with the 1422 to Waterloo on 27th February 1991.
Surprisingly, looking at the state of it here, Illustrious lasted another 5 months until September 1991 before withdrawal came following power unit failure.
It was scrapped at MC Metals in Glasgow in December 1992.
(242/366) I spotted these 2 flies mating on the outside of my living room window. I only noticed after I uploaded the photo how filthy the window is (I really hate cleaning windows - they only get dirty again) HIHD, HHD & HWW!
As many predicted when they first showed up on the property, the Progress Rail (EMDX) SD70ACe-T4s being leased by KCS have become rolling dirt magnets. Exhibit "A" is EMDX 7209 leading the M-KCVN on the UP Springfield Sub, about to cross the TRRA Illinois Transfer at Valley Junction in East St. Louis, IL in order to enter KCS' East St. Louis yard. 7209 has become a regular on this run, bouncing back and forth between Kansas City and St. Louis.
In trail: KCS AC44CW #4587 and KCS (ex-CN) GP40-2LW #2906.
Although you can't see its replacement for the trees, that searchlight on the KCS main to the left doesn't have much time left. In fact, it may already be gone; I haven't been down here in a week or two. All of Valley Junction is on the same trajectory. Get your pics now.
