To keep your character intact you cannot stoop to filthy acts. It makes it easier to stoop the next time.

The crew of a northbound Michigan Northern freight with a pair of filthy former C&NW RS3's has stopped north of Cadillac, Michigan to check on the cause of an emergency brake application. The high sun and backlighting of this run made the decision easy to carry on northward without the train, leaving my crisp clean extra flags for the next person - June 1978

I sometimes equate wealth to a richness of life experience. I see huge rewards in things that often don't translate into dollars, yet enrich me nonetheless. Bicycling up a lonely country lane the other evening brought me into a direct vector with such a moment. For a few fleeting moments, rays of sunlight broke free from the clouds setting up a wonderful shadow pattern of the tall grass across my path. Not just a static shadow. Rather one that undulated in response to the wind blowing through the grass, creating a rippling, wavelike effect. The entire scene was alive with motion yet with the ethereal quality of still-life. I absolutely love effects like this created by late evening sun. I often just stop to watch the slow but steady transition from light into darkness. The light is ever changing, especially if sun light is intermittently obscured by broken clouds as it was this night. Dazzling light, alternating with dynamic shadows and light rays, and no idea what's coming next. Here the sunburst effect at the top of the frame radiates down into the scene to visually unify sky and earth. The epitome of a rural summer evening conveyed in an almost mystical fashion that flared up then vanished within minutes. Wealth beyond dollars.
One man's trash is another man's treasure. That old chestnut often bears relevance in my life. The usual manifestation is me pulling to the side of the road to retrieve a leaf blower or some such power tool that someone else has consigned to the trash. I bring it home, fix it up and am good to go, often for years without having to purchase (or find) a replacement. And so it goes with photography. I'm attracted to places that others consider nuisances. This is not learned behavior. It's just the way I was born. It's always been this way so must be genetic. Weird how the gene pool works...not just a love of abandoned places, but the gift of an artistic streak to be able to portray these places in a way that captures the visual that attracts me in the first place. For me it's not simply that a place is abandoned but how that abandonment makes me feel. I tend to view places like this in the context of what once was. It forms a weird overlay between what's in front of me and the days when people actually lived here. And foremost in my vision is showing some sort of juxtaposition of the two worlds. The change of season brought me back to this place. To me autumn marks the end phase of the year, literally the death of summer. A fitting time to visit a place that is also, figuratively, quite dead. I timed my visit to the foliage. Rich autumn hues, but not at their peak. My favorite time is just past peak color when the trees are starting to look bare. I love the look and feel of seeing the grass concealed by a carpet of fallen leaves. And not just fallen but still rich in color and tone. Still supple and not yet withered and dry. All of this color transformed the old house into a scene of beauty. And as I stood here, the sun suddenly emerged from thick cloud cover, quite literally as I was assessing the scene through my viewfinder. In that instant an already beautiful scene became electric as the sunlight brought intense vibrance to the leaves and bounced light into the shadowy areas of the house. Once again I had that sense of uncanny timing to be here at the perfect place and time to pull a proverbial piece of treasure from the trash.
I went looking for sea eagles around the northern shore of Loch Shiel. The calm conditions might have made them easy to spot. But it started to rain. My son and wife, on a recent visit had five sea eagles in sight at the same time. But as I scoured the shore across the loch, suddenly about 30 startled Canada geese took flight from out of sight behind some gorse bushes with a terrible cacophony of noise that made me jump. But I swung my camera to catch them fly briefly and then land on the water before realising Effie was gone. I searched amongst the shoreline bushes, calling her name more and more frantically but there was no flash of her white coat. Had she fled up over the nearest hills, or into the woods? I had no idea. With a sense of dread I traced our original route back along the muddy traffic, calling out to her ever more loudly and desperately. I thought the noise might echo across the loch and bring the eagles over but unfortunately I caught sight of other movement: cows thinking I was the farmer calling them for a new delivery of hay. Now cows and dogs do not go well together. So many dog walkers killed by cows. It hastened me on my way, frequently checking over my shoulder for a herd of beasts gaining on me. But there was no sign of Effie. Had she really been so alarmed by the sound of geese that she would have fled all the way back to the car. The track bent near a bridge, and from there I suddenly spotted a little white.... it was Effie, still hundreds of yards away looking like a lost sheep feeling rather silly about itself peering eagerly round the bend towards me. What a little beauty; filthy as fv<% with mud but I was over the moon to see her. One call and she ran full tilt towards me, flying over huge puddles and mud patches, ears flapping like redundant wings, until she was in my arms. Aww my cutie, fled in terror from the madly flapping geese!

NS 1071 heads west on the Saint Croix Sub with the H-NSINTW in tow. This was my favoirte NS heritage and had the time to catch on my first day spring break, glad to get it even though its filthy like most NS units and on this run the front and number boards was frosted. I would start the chase here at Cochrane and end it off at Diamond Bluff.
