On June 26th 2019, I woke up with my head badly spinning. I went to go down the staircase to go to the toilet and I needed to use the banister. I was all over the place but was thinking it was something to do with the take away food I had which I was sick from a couple of days previous. I was going to try sleep it off thinking I would be ok but saw Jim online on WhatsApp. I messaged him telling him what the problem was and he knew straight away what was wrong and what was going to happen to me. He was in the medical car and said he would drive over. He kept telling me to message him so I did. He got over and took my blood pressure and took it again and said I needed an ambulance. I went to hospital and they done a lot of tests on me. Luckily I was OK bit they took a while to get my blood pressure down which was sky high. I missed out on having a stroke thanks to Jim and I'm extremely grateful.
Thank you Jim.

This portrait has such a balance of spontaneity and deliberation, drawing the viewer into a quiet yet dynamic street scene. The Bronica SQ-A's square format works perfectly here, framing the subject with just enough negative space to let the surrounding environment breathe. The choice of Ilford FP4+ was spot on—its fine grain and tonal richness allow the subtle textures of the wall graffiti and the stone pathway to contrast delicately with the softness of the subject's clothing and skin. The midtones are especially well-handled, with a smooth transition from the highlights in her shirt to the shadows falling lightly across her figure.
What strikes me most is how the light creates a layered composition. The strong sunlight casts crisp shadows on the walls and ground, adding depth while gently outlining her form. The background fades just enough to keep the focus on her, yet it remains detailed enough to tell a story—those graffiti-covered walls and scattered palm trees evoke a sense of place, perhaps a Mediterranean alley or a quiet urban corner. The slightly shallow depth of field further emphasizes the subject without completely isolating her from her surroundings.
Her casual pose and the "Barbie" graphic on her shirt lend an interesting contrast to the timeless monochrome aesthetic. It feels like a moment caught between the contemporary and the classic, almost like a modern reinterpretation of street photography from the mid-20th century. There's a quiet strength in her gaze that matches the grounded, almost minimalistic composition. This image has a wonderful way of capturing both the personality of the subject and the mood of the environment—intimate yet universal.
