In the V&A's courtyard.
Created by Achim Menges with Moritz Dörstelmann, Jan Knippers, Thomas Auer.
Elytra was a responsive shelter; new components of the structure were built on-site.
The pavilion tested a possible future for architectural and engineering design, exploring how new robotics technologies might transform how buildings are designed and built. The design drew on research into lightweight construction principles found in nature. It is inspired by the filament structures of the shells of flying beetles, known as elytra.
Made of glass and carbon fibre, each component of the canopy was produced using a robotic winding technique developed by the designers. Unlike other fabrication methods, this does not require moulds and can produce an infinite variety of spun shapes, while reducing waste to a minimum.

First experiments with burning filaments. Ran out of bulbs before i got the expoure nailed down so had to tinker in lightroom a little.
The obvious filament failure above was caused by breaking off the insulating glass bulb and exposing the (24'') filament to the air. This allowed conduction with the ambient surrounding rendering this effect. I wish I had a faster camera so I can capture the whole sequence. This was shot with the Canon Xsi Body and 24-70mm f2.8 lens.
My increasingly chewed up PFA tube at the left, and PLA filament at the right. It was really jammed in there good this time, impossible to push forward, and very difficult to push out. The bottom 5mm was clearly melted -- this is the portion well within the PEEK insulator. The melted portion is wider than the body of the filament, and also somewhat oval in cross section.
Welcome to the colourful world of string... This display was part of a decorated street in this year's Festa Major de Gràcia.
