These kind of light bulbs seem to be popular for outdoor applications at restaurant patios and so on. I guess they are impervious to shattering due to rain (like an incandescent bulb would be) and they are energy efficient. In any event, they look really cool.
I was walking home one night and saw one against a puffy blue sky. Thought maybe I could do something with the bulb and sky, so here it is. Next time I will get a macro and get right up on the bulb, it looks even cooler up close.

This plot shows the emission spectra of the LED lamp filament (left hand bulb in the image in the first comment below) under normal powered operation (blue line) and glowing in the oscillating electric field of the Plasma Ball on the right (red line).
Note that the lamp is being held by fingers on the screw connection. Without this 'earthing' the lamp does not glow.
The green line shows the ratio of the induced to the powered emission spectra. This exhibits an excess in the blue at ~460nm which contains the energy of the blue LED that drives the emission of the phosphor that emits the longer wavelengths.
This suggests that the electric field is exciting the electrons in the blue LED itself rather than the phosphor.
I don't (yet) know why the blue emission is double-peaked.
Note also that the phosphor emission bands in the red spectrum are slightly narrower than those in the normally-powered bulb. This may be an operating temperature effect.

We don't have too many of these in our house any more. They are a dying breed, as more CFL's make their way into our sockets. I know they're hot and inefficient (for the most part) but I do think there's something so cool about a hot, glowing tungsten filament.
