William "Fighting Billy" Tipton was born February 13, 1761 in Shenandoah, VA. He was the fourth son of John Tipton. Fighting Billy was the first Tipton to move into the Cove, and he contributed to the Cove survival with forging and milling operations. William "Fighting Billie" Tipton was the son of Col. John Tipton of Carter County, both veterans of the Revolutionary War who acquired considerable recognition for their prowess on the battlefield. Col. John Tipton received prominence also for his opposition to John Sevier over establishment of the State of Franklin. William and another son, Thomas, were awarded several Tennessee Land Grants for Cades Cove property as early as 1821 with William being the dominant land speculator. William then enticed several Carter County relatives and neighbors to migrate to Cades Cove with many acquiring property from him. -GSMNP website
This image was taken at the Tipton Place in Cades Cove Tennessee and reminds me what he must have seen when he settled this area. It is dedicated to a flickr friend who loves the cove as much as I do. Here's to you pammyvol.........
They were fighting for a short time, growling, etc, and I took some pictures, and this one came out pretty good even if you can see much motion blur if you zoom in.

While it might not be wise to tinker with a hit – this is my most popular picture — today I tweaked the colour of Toby ever so slightly towards red. I’m happier with the picture now; it is more true to life.
This picture was originally an off exposure that took me quite a few attempts to salvage enough to upload. Almost immediately after uploading I realized that Toby looked too yellow, but the picture got comments even while I dithered about making an attempt to fix it. Ever since Flickr introduced the Replace feature I have been dithering again, and finally today I made the fix. I resisted the temptation to do anything more dramatic.

After being playing scene-making supporting roles for pretty girl Xena in my most popular pictures, Toby gets his starring role in an unexpected runaway hit. This picture has been added to the Cream of the Crop pool as my most ‘faved’ picture. Thanks everyone!

This image got exposure on the Explore page at the expense of an AnomalousNYC work which seems to have been removed from interestingness circulation because it was politically controversial. While I can understand that Flickr might want to avoid controversy, Toby says “Stop being an apologist for the Man! Fight the power!”

A whole week has passed since the last new picture of Toby was uploaded, but today there are two. This one is actually a few weeks old, saved for a rainy day. (The sun is out now, but it was raining this morning when the cats normally do their best posing.)

I don't know why the shapes of this trees but the contrast with the surroundings made the scene surreal.
These two giraffe were having a serious disagreement when we came across them by the side of the road in Madikwe....
Okay, I know this is a lousy photo. What got me was the foot in the air. A moment after I took this shot all the coots in the neighborhood came to watch the commotion. One of the fighters flew away. I can't swear which one it was, so I don't know who won.

The Fallow Deer mating season is starting very slowly.
I think it's due to the warm weather, last weekend it was 24° C average temperature in daytime in the Netherlands.
Nevertheless, I could capture a fight last Saturday.
Over 100 mtrs. distance, handheld shot with the 7D II + 100-400 II + 1.4 III converter.

I hope everyone is doing well. Sorry I've been away, and not well. I've been down and out with terrible migraines. I hope to kick these and catch up to you soon.
While waiting for my daughter to get her hair done before heading out into the snow for some portraits, I saw this tall cup sitting on the short wall into our kitchen area, with the cold winter light coming through the door. The tropical trees there on the cup seemed to be a nice omen of warmer weather to come. Moved a little to get the cup in the opening and played around with the composition before snapping the capture.

Fight ended after a few minutes.
Surprisingly the one with the bigger tusks walked away.
