Manor Heath Walled Garden

This figtree started as a seedling about 12m up in the fork of a cedar and sent its roots down strangling the cedar and eventually killing it. Some decomposed remains of the cedar are still in the base of the tree.

In 1536 Portuguese explorer Pedro a Campos discovered the island en route to Brazil. He named the island Los Barbados, meaning the 'Bearded One' after the islands Fig Tree's whose long hanging aerial roots have a beard like resemblance.

there's a fig tree two houses away, and we were granted permission by the owner to net and harvest figs from the tree (it usually goes to the birds). netting a humongous, wide fig tree is harder than i thought.

The light is only partial, for what waits in the shadows is anyones guess.

It's that time of the year again, when the sea stinks and scum coats the beaches of the Capricorn Coast.

 

To someone who has grown up here, the first smell of this stuff really marks the change of season. It's really not that bad, unless you live by a tidal creek where it gets trapped and goes rotten. I did once, and a sudden rain storm stirred the rotten waters - the stench was so bad we had to leave the house.
