The branch is a plain branch but the frost makes it have the needle-like fibers. I love what nature can do.
The fiber is ready to be blown in a Blolite Microduct. (La fibra è pronta per essere soffiata nel tubetto Blolite che collegherà il nuovo datacenter con l'attuale).

It's Friday....time to dump some old stuff that's been sitting on my hard drive for way too long. Nobody looks at flickr on Fridays anyway, right?

Modern day version of 2 cans with a string (by Kevin Rouviere)
Transmits audio from one can to another over fiber optic cable. Just because.
I had this idea for awhile to make a modern version of the old kids toy. This quick prototype is based on a simple kit that I found at the Maker Shed store at Maker Faire 2009 in San Mateo. I built the circuit boards and installed them into these cans to show the concept. I've been thinking of making a full duplex version or even a digital version with CD quality sound, but those ideas have yet to leave the drawing board :-)
Update: Someone at hackaday was kind enough to find and post a link to the original kit I based this project on.

Image from a vintage asbestos abatement industry publication showing an asbestos abatement worker removing spray-applied fireproofing, a particularly problematic material due to its inherent friability.
Tens of millions of tons of asbestos still remain in our nations' buildings, infrastructure, and existing consumer products; which sooner or later, threatens the health of people around it, requiring proper handling and disposal by trained personnel.

Leptothix are gram positive bacteria formed by long thin filaments, and typically segmented as can be seen in the images. They can also branch on occasion. They are not pathogenic, unless they are associated with other microorganisms. Trichomonas and Leptothrix together have been referred to as "spaghetti and meatballs".
They tend to form clumps in liquid based cytology preparations, so they can be confused with other types of fibers.

This black conduit is being put underground to protect the fiber optic cable now being run to the school building.
My parents are visiting from the US. I was waiting and waiting and waiting for them to arrive! Can you tell why? I also got a belated birthday gift as well as an emergency fiber resupply! ;) I will be happy for awhile at least!

Blolite fibers blower with fibers spools. (Il soffiatore Blolite con i rocchetti di fibra. In secondo piano il compressore d'aria).
The fibers are being positioned to be spliced. On the right, the heat shrink protection tubing on an already spliced fiber is being heated. (Macchina per la giunzione della fibra ottica. Questa sofisticata apparecchiatura controlla elettronicamente la bontà della giunzione).
This is my first attempt at two dimensional needle felting fiber art. It is made from all wool roving. All of the Cala Lilies are made from Merino wool. I have also added some Angelina fibers to the Lilac buds.
I really enjoyed this process which is a departure from my usual 3-D needle felting projects. Although this took me quite a bit longer than I had anticipated..two weeks off and on! I have so much respect for those who create this type of felting on a regular basis. Much more difficult than it seemed!
Years ago I bought one of those stupid Fiber Optics UFO's to put on a night stand... My wife hates it... :-) So it (not me, luckily) got condemned into the closet.
We are in the process of moving and yesterday I cleaned out that closet and found it again. My wife urged me to through it out and I agreed (the thing is terribly ugly after all); but before that I wanted to take some pictures and I'm actually quite happy with how they turned out. Let me know what you think.
Oh by the way, she likes the pictures.......... :-)
