"N9FE, one of FedEx's original Falcon 20s, is still "flying" inside FedEx's Greenway Aviation Training Center on the grounds of their Memphis World Hub sorting facility. Recent photos provided to Aviation Week show the aircraft still quietly but proudly on display, suspended from the ceiling along with a Falcon cockpit section underneath.

Aviation Week Intelligence Network's Fleet database shows that this aircraft, bearing serial no. 84, first flew on April 27, 1967, and was used by LTV Aerospace Corporation until being purchased by FedEx on March 6, 1972. Originally registered N1FE, it flew for FedEx from the beginning of its operations in 1973 until the type was withdrawn from service by early 1984, at which point it was placed in storage in Marana, Ariz. It was moved to Memphis in 1985 and re-registered N9FE before being restored by volunteer employees and put on permanent display.

While N1FE/N9FE is technically the first aircraft purchased by FedEx according to Aviation Week Intelligence Network's Fleet database, N8FE has the honor of being the first to be handed over to FedEx after freighter conversion and enter service. That aircraft is currently on public display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, inside their Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center outside Washington D.C.

The Falcon 20 was instrumental in getting FedEx through its formative years and was the only aircraft they operated until larger 727s began arriving in 1978. By 1985, after a fleet of 727s and DC-10s had been established, 30 of their Falcons had been sold to other operators while the remaining two were saved for preservation.

The cockpit section on the floor, previously used as a procedures trainer, belongs to Falcon 20 N990L (s/n 43). It was purchased by FedEx in 1975 for parts after it was damaged in an accident in Grand Prairie, Texas."

Departing Phoenix, AZ on March 5, 2014. Sometimes you just have to deal with backlighting.....

"S/N" is the aircraft's serial number. "L/N" is a Boeing code denoting what order the airframe came off the production line. "F/N" refers to an individual airline's fleet numbering system. Not all airlines use a fleet number; not all manufacturers use a line number.

Federal Express (FedEx) - McDonnell Douglas MD-11F - N580FE (c/n 48471/558) - Ashton

This MD-11 was delivered new as a standard passenger variant to China Airlines as B-153 in December 1993. It would then fly under the same registration for Mandarin Airlines from November 1995 to November 1998, when it would return to China Airlines service, this time re-registered as B-18152. The aircraft would leave China Airlines service in July 2001, when it was purchased by Federal Express (FedEx) and converted into an MD-11 Freighter (MD-11F) and re-registered as N580FE. This MD-11F also carries the name "Ashton." Federal Express aircraft are usually named after the children of Fed Ex employees via drawing/lottery.

UPDATE (July 2016) - N580FE would be withdrawn from service by FedEx on May 8, 2015 and placed into storage at Southern California Logistics Airport (VCV / KVCV) in Victorville, California.

North American Airlines - Boeing 757-28A - N750NA (c/n 26277/658) - Deirdre Stiehm and North American Airlines - Boeing 757-28A - N752NA (c/n 28174/865) - Clinton D.

N750NA (at right) was delivered to North American Airlines as "Deidre Stiehm" in January 1995. It also served as the "Bush - Cheney 2000" aircraft during the 2000 Presidential campaign. The aircraft was briefly leased by WestJet between February 12, 2011 and May 1, 2011, for the airline's service to Hawaii from western Canada. During this brief period the aircraft was fully painted in WestJet's livery. It has since returned to North American Airlines service and recently repainted, with the tail awaiting the addition of North American's familiar Stars & Stripes.

UPDATE (June 2022) - N750NA would be withdrawn from service and placed into storage at Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR / KGYR) on October 26, 2011. It was then acquired by Federal Express in April 2012 for conversion into a 757 Special Freighter. The aircraft would be re-registered as N971FD on October 10, 2012, named "Darcy," and enter service with FedEx on February 5, 2013.

N752NA (at left) was delivered to North American Airlines as "Clinton D." in May 1999. The aircraft was briefly leased by Avianca (and named "Alisa Ferrara") between December 2005 and January 31, 2006, before returning to North American Airlines service.

UPDATE (June 2022) - N752NA would be withdrawn from service on January 29, 2012, and then placed into storage at Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR / KGYR) from June 28, 2012 to February 20, 2013. It would then breifly be placed into storage at Istanbul Atatürk Airport (ISL / LTBA) from February 21, 2013 to March 6, 2013. On February 6, 2013, the aircraft would be feried to Rostov-on-Don International Airport (RVY [ex- ROV] / URRR). It would then be re-registered as VP-BLT after it was leased by ILFC to UTair on February 22, 2013, and would then operate under the same registration for Azur Air beginning on December 27, 2014. In November 2016, the aircraft would be withdrawn from service and ferried to Cecil Field (VQQ / KVQQ) in Jacksonville, Florida, where she'd be converted into a 757-200 Precision Conversions Freighter (757-200(PCF)), (presumably) by Flightstar Aircraft Services. The aircraft was acquired by DHL (re-registered as N281DH) on December 8, 2016, and the conversion was completed by June 30, 2017. On that date the aircraft was re-registered as G-DHKJ and entered revenue service with DHL Air. On March 18, 2019, the aircraft was re-registered as D-ALET and entered service with European Air Transport Leipzig (EAT Leipzig) for operations on behalf of DHL.

Originally built as N112WA in 1980 and delivered to World Airways on May 14th of that year, this plane has had a fascinating ownership/lease history:

- used by Lufthansa in 1989

- served for Garuda from July 1989 to July 1990

- alternated between World Airways and Malaysia Airlines from 1990 to 1994

- finally joined FedEx's fleet on September 2, 1994 with the current registration, and has not been repainted since then (note the "Federal Express" titles still remaining!)

Federal Express (FedEx) - McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10F (MD-10-10F) - N386FE (c/n 46620/138) - T.J.

This DC-10 was delivered to United Airlines (UAL) as N1821U in February 1974 and operated with the airline until April 1997 prior to its conversion to a Freighter and service with FedEx. The MD-10 designation refers to an upgrade which allowed for cockpit commonality between the DC-10 and successor MD-11. This aircraft was the first so converted.

UPDATE (April 2016) - N386FE would be withdrawn from service and placed into storage at Victorville (VCV / KVCV) on March 15, 2013.

Looking a bit sad at the other side of the airfield is Airbus 300 N718FD of FedEx. It could definitely do with a painting.

Beside its own aircraft fleet, FedEx Federal Express has franchise agreement with different small cargo companies to operate "feeder" flights.

OO-FEA (Fokker F-27-600F c/n 10385) was delivered in December 1968 to TAA Trans Australia Airlines as VH-TQN. In May 1985 it was sold to SAS Scandinavian Airlines System as OY-KAC. In September 1989 SAS retired the plane and was sold it to Aircraft Finance and Trading BV that immediately sold it to ServisAir as OO-FEA to be operated for FedEx. In March 1991 it went to Iona National Airways as EI-FEA, always flying for Fedex. In May 1992 it was acquired by Empire Airlines as N729FE and it continued to operate for FedEx until May 2009 when the plane was sold to Executive Jet Support as N19NN. In April 2010 it was leased to PT Air Maleo as PK-ZMV to be eventually retired in August 2015 and the plane scrapped by November 2016.

The original comes from my own slide collection, which contains both my own photos and those acquired over the past forty or so years collecting.

I began uploading photos into this Flickr photostream to create a home for the slides that have been part of my collection. They deserve to be enjoyed by the aircraft enthusiast community as a whole rather than being tucked away in boxes and binders. Think of it like an old time aircraft slide show but for the 21st century.
