The Institute of Sexology - Exhibition Review
The Wellcome Collection’s most recent exhibition features work by historical and contemporary sexology pioneers. The rich collection includes works of erotica, art, photography and film, which are met with work which look at the topic of sex through a scientific approach. This combination of science and art allows for an unusual experience, it brings something much more than your general exhibition would. From a series of photographs by Zanele Mulholi fuelled by making a controversial statement about modern society’s perceptions on sexuality and gender to archival documents by academic, feminist and scientist Marie Stopes which feature graphic information of her personal sexual experiences, the collection explores the topic of sexology from all angles. The unusual curation evokes ideas and concepts, which in the past have perhaps been viewed as taboos, yet now with modern day societies accepting (or not accepting) issues regarding sex, gender and sexuality the exhibition couldn’t have been displayed at a better moment in time. There are still taboos regarding these issues and the pieces shown attempt to abolish these, regardless of the time period in which they were created, the pieces are completely relevant for today.

The circular features in this VIS image are part of the summit of Olympus Mons. Large volcanic craters known as calderas are located at the summits of all the Tharsis volcanoes. These calderas are produced by massive volcanic explosions and collapse. Scarps and extensional features (graben) record multiple stages of caldera collapse at the summit of Olympus Mons. Olympus Mons is the largest volcano in the solar system, reaching heights over 25 km (16 miles) tall from base to summit, with the base covering an area as large as the state of Arizona. For comparison, Mauna Loa is 9 km (5.5 miles) tall measured from its base on the sea floor

This handmade bracelet features some beautiful tiger quartz beads that have swirls of pink, brown, yellow, and cream in them. They are accented with gold plated findings. The bracelet is approximately 7.5 inches long.

A very nice and small hand drill by Goodell Pratt. The model number 5 features a drill bit compartment in the handle top. Spring loaded three jaw chuck is stamped GOODELL PRATT COMPANY MASS U.S.A Aug 3 1895. Rim of drill bit compartment is stamped Goodell Brothers, Greenfield Mass. Pateneted Nov 17 1891. Crank handle also stamped Goodell Pratt Company, Greenfield, Mass. U.S.A.
This drill is missing its elongated side handle, has suffers from some paint loss but is all in all in very good shape. The chuck jaws are well shaped, the teeth on the pinion and gear wheel are all present and in good shape and the action is smooth. Brass ferrules are present and undamaged, as is the rosewood crank knob. This drill has been cleaned inside out and the top handle has been lightly sanded with fine steel wool and coated with shellac. A very good drill for smaller work.
The Postcard
A postally unused postcard that was published by Santoro Graphics Ltd. of Rotherham. The card was printed in England.
The back of the card states that the artwork features the Mauretania by Colin Ashford, but in fact it shows the Aquitania by Kenneth D. Shoesmith.
Shoesmith has cleverly depicted the RMS Aquitania between two of New York’s huge skyscrapers.
An original copy of this 1928 color lithograph is held by the Peabody Essex Museum, the gift of the estate of Francis B. C. Bradlee.
An original copy of this Kenneth Shoesmith, Cunard Line Europe-America poster sold for £7,500 in 2020.
RMS Aquitania
Aquitania was the third of Cunard’s three huge ocean liners, preceded by RMS Mauretania, and RMS Lusitania. She was in service between 1914 and 1950.
She served in both world wars, sailing three million miles over 450 round voyages, carrying 1.2 million passengers.
She was the longest-serving express liner of the 20th. century.
Despite all its glamour, this ship also had third class, and was used to transport emigrants on voyages between Europe and the United States.
She was the last liner with four funnels.
Her four funnels allowed the crew to establish a unique method of classifying fog, counting the number of funnels visible from the bridge – fog with four funnels, fog with three funnels... When the number of visible funnels was less than three, everyone had to rely on luck to ensure that navigation would proceed without incident.
Aquitania, a 45,000-ton ship, was the pride of the Cunard Line in the 1920's, along with Mauretania (32,000 tons) and Berengaria (52,000 tons).
After serving as a troop transport during World War II, she was withdrawn from service in 1950, surpassing by several years the service life of Berengaria and Mauretania , which had been withdrawn in the mid-1930's.

Kenneth D. Shoesmith
Kenneth Denton Shoesmith was born in 1890 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, but grew up in Blackpool. He was an artist, marine artist, painter, and poster artist.
Despite showing early promise as an artist, in his early teens Kenneth decided upon a career at sea. At the age of 16 he became a Conway Cadet on HMS Conway, the Merchant Navy training school ship moored at Liverpool.
He later joined the Royal Mail Lines, but continued his enthusiasm for drawing and painting as he travelled the world. While mainly self-taught, he took a correspondence course early in his new artistic career.
Other shipping companies of the day also employed his skills, including , Blue Funnel, Union Castle, Anchor Line, as well as Canadian Pacific Railways.
Kenneth also worked for the publisher Thomas Forman, who produced Cunard's famous postcards, creating some of their best- known images.
He also produced scenes of various tourist sites, as well as posters for Southern Railways.
Kenneth was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and of the British Society of Poster Designers.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Paris Salon and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool in addition to one-man shows in Belfast and elsewhere.
Kenneth's work today is known and appreciated by only a few, yet his highly colourful, flamboyant early style captured the essential romance and adventure of ocean liner travel in the 1920's and 1930's. However his style changed profoundly over time from a Brangwyn-esque freedom to a more stylised and restrained 'Art Deco' coolness.
The Ulster Museum has 300 of Shoesmith's original paintings and sketches in its collection.

In 1930, the First Lord Vestey, owner of the Blue Star Line, commissioned Shoesmith to paint a series of murals depicting the events surrounding the English victory of 1588 over the Spanish Armada, for the dining room of his home, Kingswood in Dulwich.
In ten panels, telling the story, from Sir Francis Drake's game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe, to the return of the English fleet at Dover Castle, Shoesmith's oil paintings recreated the classic schoolboy history image of the great sea battle, with richly coloured galleons and wrecked Spanish ships.
Each panel was 40 inches high, constrained by the dimensions of Vestey's walls, while their width fitted the individual bays and alcoves of the dining room.
In 1939 the murals were taken down when, with the outbreak of War, Kingswood became War Department offices. They were put into storage, and with the coming of peace in 1945, were donated by the Vestey family to Radley College, where Lord Vestey's son, Captain William Vestey (killed while serving with the Scots Guards, in 1944), had been educated.
At Radley they hung on the walls of the College Dormitory for more than thirty years. However, when that building was altered in 1976, the paintings were again taken down and put into storage.
In 1988 Radley decided, with the Vestey family's agreement, to sell the murals in order to fund the purchase of works by young artists, and in 1998 the murals were sent to auction.

Another highpoint of Shoesmith's career was a series of large decorative murals that he painted in 1933 for the interiors of the Cunard White Star liner Queen Mary.
These included two works for the cabin class drawing room, the monumental Flower Market and The Madonna of the Atlantic, an altarpiece, covered by a folding screen when not in use, and The Madonna of the Tall Ships for the tourist class library.

Kenneth Shoesmith died in 1939, aged just 48. His obituary read:
'As a poster artist - he was quite definitely in the
front rank of those who are content to paint what
they see and know.
He was direct in his methods, sound in his drawing,
and brilliant in his colour.
His ships were not only correct in detail, but they
were always in, and not on, the water, for he painted
with a seaman's knowledge as well as an artist's
perception.'

Playthings of the Past
Focused on our youngest visitors, ages 3-10, Playthings of the Past features toys, dolls, and other kinds of material culture of childhood from the Lyman Allyn’s permanent collection. The core collection grew out of a substantial gift in the 1960s from toy collector Lydia Baratz, who had assembled an impressive collection over a period of 40 years. Many pieces in the Baratz Collection and in subsequent donations are European or American dolls and toys from the 19th and early 20th century.
Why does play matter and how does it shape us, especially as children? Through play, children experiment with the world and begin to understand their place in it.
Play, whether with toys, games or one’s imagination, is universal. With an area for hands-on play with sensory materials, books, games and dolls, this gallery encourages children to touch, learn, and explore through play.
Victorian Dollhouse
Built for the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in 1962 by Harold E. Hawthorne, former president of Hawthorne Woodworking in Oakdale, the American Victorian Dollhouse was designed to house dolls and doll furniture donated by Lydia Baratz. The exterior of the dollhouse was designed to reflect the Victorian tastes of its doll inhabitants, with a shingle mansard roof, dormer windows, and a widow’s walk encircling two chimneys. While the house is decorated in the style of 1850, the furnishings span the Victorian era into the early 20th century. The three floors of the home’s interior include bedrooms, a dining room, a nursery, a sewing room, and two kitchens, showcasing the many wonderful miniatures of the Baratz Collection.

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum is home to a collection of more than 18,000 works.
The Museum opened in March 1932 with only 13 objects from the permanent collection on view. Of the original 13 on display, four were of Asian or ancient origin, four were European sculptures – two of which were quite modern – and five were European works on paper dating from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Today, the collection has grown to include more than 18,000 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, furniture and decorative arts as a result of active acquisitions by the Museum and generous donations to the Lyman Allyn.
The collection spans a 2,600-year period, ranging from ancient Greek and Roman artifacts to works by living artists, with particular strengths in American and European art from the 18th and 19th centuries. Notable artists in the collection include Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, John Copley, Winthrop Chandler, Paul Revere, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Sol LeWitt, Eugene Delacroix, Charles LeBrun, J. A. D. Ingres, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, among many others.
The 18th Century
New London’s deep water harbor has driven the regional economy since colonial times, connecting southeastern Connecticut to the broader Atlantic world. In the 18th century, local shipping merchants specialized in the West Indies trade, exporting livestock and food to Caribbean plantations in exchange for sugar, molasses, and rum. Economic growth and stability in the second half of the century enabled colonists to acquire a greater range of household goods—textiles, silver, glass, ceramics, furniture, and paintings among them. Some goods were imported, while others were produced in the home or by craftsmen and artists, whose work and skill expanded to meet increasing demand. The Tea Table and the painting of Sarah Deshon (from the same family) tell a local story, showing how the Deshons of 18th century New London cemented their status and wealth from trade with objects that conveyed their social and economic standing.
Connecticut played a key role in the American Revolution, as political tension over taxation and colonial governance led to war with Britain. With the British headquartered in New York City, New London’s harbor was an ideal site from which to initiate naval attacks on British loyalists. New London’s privateering (the use of authorized private ships to attack and loot enemy ships) prompted British troops to retaliate, burning New London in the Battle of Groton Heights on September 6, 1781.
Daniel Huntington’s portrait of Abigail Dolbeare Hinman, 1854–56, recreates an episode from this event, showing Hinman standing with her musket in hand, attempting to shoot Benedict Arnold, who can be seen through the window, sitting on horseback.
The 19th Century
As the young nation sought to define itself in the first half of the 19th century, artists created objects and paintings to unite Americans around common ideals of liberty, justice, and hope for the future. Some objects were overtly patriotic, while others were less direct. Hudson River School landscapes, for example, expressed pride in the nation’s natural resources, with scenes from the woods, rivers, and mountains of the northeast standing in for all of America, suggesting the promise of land, the spread of civilization, and the unique, almost spiritual quality of the landscape.
Artists also traveled to Europe to study art and see the sights, painting mountains and classical ruins, as Thomas Cole did in his the majestic view of Mount Etna, drawing visual connections between the ideals of the newly minted American Republic and those of classical antiquity.
Steam power, the railroad, the telegraph, and improved roads and canals ushered in the age of industrialization, facilitating the mass production and transportation of goods. Whereas many objects had been crafted by hand in the previous century, the 19th century saw the rise of goods made with machines. Connecticut mills and factories produced munitions, tinworks, clocks, furniture, and textiles, among other things. Early factories were fueled by whale oil, an important industrial lubricant and lamp fuel supplied by whaling, the most significant part of New London’s economy for several decades.
Isaac Sheffield, who painted portraits of many local whaling captains, portrayed five-year-old James Francis Smith shortly after his return from a long whaling voyage in 1837 with his father, New London whaling captain Franklin Smith. They had gone to Desolation Island in the South Seas, and his portrait shows him wearing a penguin skin coat, with the Chelsea, the ship his father had captained, in the background.
The United States grew dramatically over the course of the 19th century, expanding westward and growing in population with waves of immigration. Regional differences and tension over slavery and states’ rights erupted in the U.S. Civil War (1861–65). In New London County, a number of textile mills were built to supply the Union troops. After the war, New England’s mills became an industrial powerhouse, employing and sustaining entire towns.
The 20th Century
In a period of tremendous growth and change, artists looked forward and back, charting new terrain with abstraction, while revisiting their artistic roots through innovative approaches to traditional genres such as landscape, still life, and portraiture.
The early 20th century was a time of rapid expansion and industrialization fueled in part by waves of immigration. A decade of exuberance followed World War I before the stock market crash of 1929 initiated the Great Depression of the 1930s. Abstraction and European modernism filtered into American art, while a realistic, regional style simultaneously held sway, resulting in a mix of subjects and styles.
Many artists were drawn to the energy and bustle of the modern city, awash in crowds and transformed by industry, skyscrapers and the automobile. The city could be intense, noisy, and oppressive, however, and some artists retreated during the summer to Connecticut art colonies to paint peaceful landscapes and scenes of leisure. Guy Wiggins drew inspiration from both the city and the country, painting impressionistic views of New York in winter, as well as scenes such as Church on the Hill, ca. 1910–12, showing country life in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
Beatrice Cuming’s painting, Chubb, shows a submarine being built in Groton, Connecticut during World War II. Cuming’s canvas affirms New London’s long connection to the sea and celebrates industry at a time when the nation was consumed with the war effort.
Post-War Art
In the prosperity and growth of the post-World War II era, a multiplicity of artistic trends and styles arose, dominated by abstraction. New York emerged as the center of the international art world. The 1960s and ‘70s witnessed cultural upheaval as people of color and women sought equal rights and many protested the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. The prevalence of advertising and mass media led artists to explore new themes, performance, and technology, questioning the definitions of art and the idea of originality.
Since the 1980s, the postmodern art world has been in flux, and issues of gender, race, politics, and cultural identity have been at the fore in our globalized and technology-driven world. In A.R.T. (in the new world order), 1994, African-American artist Willie Cole uses text on a blackboard to create an acrostic poem of sorts, using various word associations and erasure to define and comment on art and culture.

Outdoor Garden Water Feature Fountain - Features / Fountains
Garden fountains are beautiful outdoor water accents. Outdoor fountains are used in public parks, gardens, yards, patios and decks.
