The Institute of Sexology - Exhibition Review

 

The Wellcome Collection’s most recent exhibition features work by historical and contemporary sexology pioneers. The rich collection includes works of erotica, art, photography and film, which are met with work which look at the topic of sex through a scientific approach. This combination of science and art allows for an unusual experience, it brings something much more than your general exhibition would. From a series of photographs by Zanele Mulholi fuelled by making a controversial statement about modern society’s perceptions on sexuality and gender to archival documents by academic, feminist and scientist Marie Stopes which feature graphic information of her personal sexual experiences, the collection explores the topic of sexology from all angles. The unusual curation evokes ideas and concepts, which in the past have perhaps been viewed as taboos, yet now with modern day societies accepting (or not accepting) issues regarding sex, gender and sexuality the exhibition couldn’t have been displayed at a better moment in time. There are still taboos regarding these issues and the pieces shown attempt to abolish these, regardless of the time period in which they were created, the pieces are completely relevant for today.
