A common name for a pub, Dublin’s "Bridge Tavern" is on the corner of Summerhill Parade and Clarence Street.
It is in the shadow of Croke Park stadium, the principal stadium and headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA).
Since 1891 Croke Park has hosted Gaelic sports (such as hurling and Gaelic football), and has grown to become a major influence in the cultural life of the local communities.
As of this photo in 2018 Dublin county was preparing for its 4th All-Ireland Senior Football Champions title in a row. The trophy at the end of this knockout competition contested by GAA county teams commemorates Sam Maguire, a legendary footballer and leading figure in the London GAA and wider Irish emigrant community in England.
The photo was taken during one of those rare things in Ireland – a heat wave !
The summer of 2018 was so hot the government ordered water rationing
The artwork was done by FeatureWalls the mural painting company (www.featurewalls.ie)
Funding was provided by the North East Inner City task force (www.neic.ie)
The pub is reviewed here on Dublin-By-Pub

About time we got a decent cafe in Glen Waverley!
This one seemed to be modelled after Brunetti's in Carlton, with a cafe, pasticceria and trattoria downstairs, and probably a posher dining room upstairs that has yet to be completed.
The mains are quite good, breakfast seems ok, but what we're after are the small Italian sweets that would be perfect over coffee!

Featuring a wonderful rounded overall design, this is the facade of a pretty and very stylised pale yellow stucco Art Deco villa in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick. The rounded porch canopy and bay window alcoves, the Functionalist Moderne windows, the speed lines along the roofline and the minimal decoration all pay homage to the chic, uncluttered lines of Streamline Moderne Art Deco architecture in the 1930s. The original low fence with its plain pillars and wrought iron decoration is also very Art Deco.
The garden to this house is filled with a wonderful mixture of exotics and cottage garden plants, from roses and geraniums to exotic palms, lilies and a cyprus tree.

Aged brass wall cladding adds warmth, depth, and texture to this contemporary interior space. The large-format brass panels are finished in a rich, burnished patina with subtle tonal variation, arranged with clean horizontal joints and thin metal reveals. The lighting enhances the golden warmth of the surface, creating an inviting and luxurious atmosphere.
Perfect for boutique interiors, lounges, and statement walls, this installation showcases the power of patinated metal to transform a space with character and craftsmanship.

Cafe Mint is a nice cosy Middle-Eastern place in the less-trendy end of Crown St, Surry Hills, near Cleveland Street. Further north is the trendier section with the likes of Bills and Billy Kwong. I rather like this more bohemian end, where every other shop is seemingly Indian or Middle-Eastern. In fact, strolling before dinner, we see a few skewers of lamb kefta glistening on the grills. Very hard to resist. We also see Sushi Suma (Sushi Suma - Mietta's review) with a short queue of diners waiting for it to open. We make a note to return next time.
With a good selection of mezze and a few warming tagines to ward off the Winter chills, it is a good place to graze over a few dishes with friends.
We start with a Muhammara dip of capsicum and walnut. Nutty and faintly smoky, perhaps from the chargrilled capsicum. It was a bit cheeky to charge for bread separate to the dips, but the pita crisps were nice enough to each on their own with a zingy zaatar topping.
Strips of tender lamb was served with a za'alook, basically a simple salad of eggplant and tomato strips, providing a nice foil to the meaty lamb. The chargrilled quail was lovely marinated in thyme, lemon and chilli, but a little under-done for us. The knock-your-head-off harissa was great with the lamb shoulder tagine too, a nice contrast to the sweet and savoury flavours of the tagine and the meltingly tender hunks of meat.
A surprise hit was the lemon and saffron roast chicken. It's not something Julia and I would order, but we loved it. Thanks to Isabel and Andrew for choosing that! The chicken was fragrant with lemon and saffron. The tender grains of pilaf coated with herbs was a lovely accompaniment.
We would have stuck around for the Turkish apple and mint teas, or even the chai, but parking-limits got the better of us. Next time!

After the Great War (1914 - 1918), higher costs of living and the "servant problem" made living in the grand mansions and villas built in the Victorian and Edwardian eras a far less practical and attractive option for both those looking for new housing, and those who lived in big houses. It was around this time, in answer to these problems, that flats and apartments began to replace some larger houses, and became fashionable to live in.
By the 1930s, stylish Art Deco flats like these, would have suited those of comfortable means who could afford to live in Essendon (the suburb in which these flats are located), and dispense with the difficulties of keeping a large retinue of staff. This block of four flats, featuring two dwellings above the others with an interconnecting staircase would have suited a small family, or perhaps a newly married couple for whom this would have been their first home.
This chic Streamline Moderne style building with its flat roof, white stuccoed brick walls, Functionalist windows, speed lines, rounded feature wall and stepped entrance follow the less cluttered lines of Metroland Art Deco architecture that came out of England after the war.
Essendon was established in the 1860s and became an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens.

The pastries at are still good, but the cooked breakfasts have gone downhill. The doughnut was still light and fluffy with a good firm custard inside.
The sardines on the otherhand, while just cooked, didn't have any charring from the grill, almost as if it had been poached! It did have a crunchy breadcrumb sprinklings of pangrattato, but that was devoid of any garlic flavour, which would have helped balance the fishiness. The eggplant relish was quite heavy with cardamom, and that didn't suit the sardines either. Perhaps this would have been better as an escabeche with sweet and sour onions.
The grilled sourdough was great though. I do love the bread at Il Fornaio!
I wonder if the bistro is still doing inventive dishes at lunch and dinner? They used to have amazing items like the Fig and Basil wrapped with Prosciutto with Olive Oil and Vincotto or Pork Chops with Roquefort Butter and Fat Fries. Or even yummy breakfasts like Poached Pear and Blue Mascarpone on Sourdough Toast!
