Many visitors were compelled to hang over the edge of the cliffs that define this deep canyon. This woman embraces the beauty while defying the danger. I looked up the statistics and it turns out that about one out of 2 million visitors does have a fatal fall at the canyon.

On narrow edge trails like this, you can only stare down at your feet to make sure you don't miss a step that will end up becoming a fatal fall down the steep slope. Thankfully, it didn't happen too often during the trek, but I wince every time a helicopter flies by as it usually means a rescue mission.
Born in Queensland, McVicar was employed as a labourer for Dalgety & Co in Auckland when he enlisted in March 1915. He served at Gallipoli and in France, was promoted to corporal in the Auckland Infantry Regiment, fractured his right leg in a non-service accident in 1917, and was discharged in May 1919.
On 12 September 1919, McVicar fell down some stairs at his Grey Lynn home, and later died at Auckland Hospital from internal haemorrhage. It was also found that he had cirrhosis of the liver.

FATAL FALL OF ROCK.
HUIA DAM ACCIDENT.
WORKER STRUCK ON HEAD.
DEATH ALMOST INSTANTANEOUS.
A workman at the City Council dam at Huia, Mr. John Urquhart, aged 45, was killed by a falling rock at the dam late yesterday afternoon. Mr. Urquhart was working with some other men in one of the quarries connected with the construction of the dam when a moderate-sized piece of rock became dislodged above him and commenced to fall. He was struck on the head, his face being severely injured, while the back of his skull was crushed severely. Death was almost instantaneous. It is understood that his fellow-workmen called to him to look out, but he walked into the path of the rock.
The St. John Ambulance was summoned, together with a city doctor, under the impression that the accident was not fatal. The journey to the dam was made with considerable difficulty owing to the bad state of the road, which had been recently blinded with clay and had been affected by the rain. The body was brought in to the mortuary at Auckland by the ambulance.
Mr. Urquhart was a married man and leaves a wife and two children. He is believed to have a sister residing in Whangarei.

FATAL ROCK FALL
WORKMAN KILLED AT HUIA.
ARDUOUS TRIP FOR AMBULANCE. OARS BOGGED ON OLAY ROAD.
A quarry near the Huia dam was the scene of a distressing fatality yesterday afternoon, a City Council workman, John Urquhart, aged 45, being killed by a fall of rock. Mr. Urquhart was working on the rock face when, a moderate-sized piece of stone above him became dislodged, and fell on his head. The skull was fractured, and death was instantaneous. The quarry is a mile and a half distant from the main road, and the body was carried along the cordwroy track through the bush, the working gang taking fourminute spells in carrying the stretcher.
The St. John Ambulance was summoned from Auckland, and one of the motor ambulances, carrying a doctor made the journey to the dam. It was a difficult drive, owing to the heavy state of the clay roads, and the ambulance encountered several cars which were bogged. Difficulties were overcome, however, and the journey to and from Huia was accomplished in four hours. The body was brought to the mortuary to await an inquest. Mr. Urquhart, who was a returned soldier, leaves a widow and two children.

RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
CHILD FALLS FROM A TRAIN.
A serious accident happened to a girl named Elsie Whitehouse, daughter of a Matakohe settler, yesterday. The mother left Auckland by the 11.45 a.m. train yesterday, accompanied by her two children, the girl being ten years of age, and the boy eight. These two were standing on the carriage platform when the train left Avondale, and as it rounded the curve at the foot of the hill by the brickworks tne girl was thrown off, failing beside the ballasting. The boy told his mother of the accident, but Mrs. Whitehouse was unable to communicate with the guard until New Lynn was reached. When the information was received the train was immediately backed towards the scene of the accident, the guard and others being on the look-out. The child was found lying beside the line, unconscious, bruised, and bleeding. Dr. Carolan was immediately sent for, and under his direction the child was removed to his house, where she was also seen by Dr. Porter. An examination disclosed that the child was suffering from concussion of the brain and paralysis of the right side, while her right arm was broken and an artery on the left side of the skull ruptured, the skull having to be opened to stop the bleeding. The girl was in a very serious condition, but to-day she showed a little more vitality.
The patient was to-day removed to the Mater Miserecordia private hospital. Dr. Carolan operated yesterday after consultation with Dr. Porter. The medical men consider that the patient is in a very serious condition, but hopes are entertained for her recovery.

FATAL FALL FROM A TRAIN.
THE INQUEST.
An inquest into the death of the little girl Elsie Rita Whitehouse, who fell off a train near Avondale on Monday last, was held this morning before the Coroner (Mr T. Gresham) and a jury of six. Sergeant Hendry conducted the case for the police.
Evidence of identification was given by the father of the deceased.
Percy Freeman Whitehouse, a brother of the deceased, an intelligent little boy six years of age, said he was with his sister on the platform of the carriage. His sister was peeling on orange, and was throwing away the peel when the train gave a sudden jerk and she fell off. His sister was leaning a little forward, and was not holding anything. Mrs Whitehouse, mother of the deceased, deposed to giving her little daughter an orange, and telling her to eat it just outside the carriage door.
Peter Houlhahan, a railway guard, said he was in charge of the 10.50 a.m. train on Monday last. He was in the van at the time the accident occurred, between Avondale and New Lynn. Witness went through the carriage about six minutes before the occurrence. All the children were then safely inside. There was a notice in the carriage cautioning passengers against standing on the platform. At the place where the child fell off the line makes a fairly Iong curve on an incline. The train would be travelling about fifteen miles an hour at the time. Trains always made a slight jolt when taking a curve. Witness had not noticed any unusual jerk. After the accident witness' attention was attracted by someone in the carriage waving. He stopped the train with the emergency brake. The train was at once put back and the child picked up. The child was carried on to New Lynn.
To Sergeant Hendry: If witness had seen the child on the platform he would have sent her inside.
To a Juryman: The only means a passenger had of communicating with the guard was by coming through the train.
Dr. J. P. Carolan, residing at Avondale, deposed to seeing the deceased at New Lynn Railway Station at the request of the railway people. The child was unconscious. There was no hemorrhage. He examined the child, and found very slight abrasions on the forehead. There was no wound of any kind on the head. The right shoulder and arm were very much bruised. The right arm was completely paralysed, and the upper arm broken below the articulation of the shoulder joint. Witness suggested the child's removal to the Hospital. The mother objected, and wanted witness, who had been their family doctor, for years, to take her under his care. The child was then taken to his residence. Witness considered the case very serious, and held a consultation with Dr. Porter. They considered there was an injury to the brain, and an operation was performed. Dr. Porter tied up a small artery on the brain. Subsequently (on Tuesday morning) the child was removed to a private hospital in Auckland. The child died on Wednesday without recovering consciousness. The cause of death was concussion of the brain.
Dr. A. H. Porter deposed to being called in consultation with the last witness. He confirmed the evidence of Dr. Carolan. Death was due to pressure of effused fluid on the vital centres of the base of the brain.
A verdict of death by accident and misfortune was returned.

The curse gained popular credence with this and each successive mysterious death. The US magnate died of pneumonia resulted from a cold contracted at the tomb.
